Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada has “no intention” of pursuing a free trade deal with China.”We have no intention of doing that with China or any other non-market economy,” he told reporters on Sunday in Ottawa. “What we’ve done with China is to rectify some issues that have developed in the last couple of years.” Carney said that under the continental trade pact, known as CUSMA, Canada cannot pursue free trade agreements with non-market economies – ones driven more by government than market forces without prior notification. Carney’s remarks come one day after US President Donald Trumpآ threatened to impose 100 per cent tariffsآ on Canada if it goes through with a trade deal with China. ( Source link
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that a private plane carrying eight people crashed shortly after takeoff from Bangor International Airport in Maine. The fate of the eight people on board was not immediately known, and no official details were available. A government official stated that a large fire broke out after the crash, noting that the plane had arrived in Maine after a flight from Texas. The FAA said that the twin-engine Bombardier Challenger 600 jet crashed during takeoff from Bangor Airport, adding that it would investigate the incident in cooperation with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). This incident comes amid a severe snowstorm sweeping across the northeastern United States. Temperatures in Maine have dropped well below zero, with light snowfall causing a significant decrease in visibility. Source link

US President Donald Trump said Saturday that he would impose a 100% tariff on Canada if it follows through on a trade deal with China and warned Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that a deal would endanger his country.”China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A.”Carney’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Canadian prime minister this month traveled to China to reset the countries’ strained relationship and reached a trade deal with Canada’s second-biggest trading partner after the United States.Immediately after Carney’s China trip, Trump sounded supportive.”It’s a good thing for him to sign a trade deal,” Trump told reporters at the White House on January 16. “If you can get a deal with China, you should do that.”However, US-Canada tensions have grown in recent days following Carney’s criticism of Trump’s pursuit of Greenland.Saturday Trump suggested that China would try to use Canada to evade US tariffs.”If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a ‘Drop Off Port’ for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken,” Trump said, using a title for Carney that refers to Trump’s past calls for Canada to become the 51st US state.Trump has repeatedly threatened to annex Canada, and this week posted an image on social media of a map with Canada – as well as Greenland and Venezuela – covered by the American flag.If Trump makes good on the latest threat, the new tariff would greatly increase US duties on its northern neighbour, adding pressure to Canadian industrial sectors such as metal manufacturing, autos and machinery.Relations between Carney and Trump seemed relatively placid until the Canadian leader this week spoke out forcefully against Trump’s pursuit of Greenland.Carney subsequently at the World Economic Forum called on nations to accept that a rules-based global order was over and pointed to Canada as an example of how “middle powers” might act together to avoid being victimised by American hegemony.Carney, during his speech in Davos, Switzerland, did not directly call out Trump or the United States by name. However, the prime minister argued that “middle powers must act together because if you are not at the table, you are on the menu”.Many world leaders and industry titans present at the Switzerland confab responded with a standing ovation.Trump shot back in his own Davos speech and said Canada “lives because of the United States”, a statement that Carney rejected on Thursday.”Canada and the United States have built a remarkable partnership in the economy, in security and in rich cultural exchange,” Carney said in Quebec. “Canada doesn’t live because of the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadian.”Since then, Trump has dug in, revoking Canada’s invitation to his Board of Peace that he wants to deal with international conflicts and Gaza’s future. After Carney’s election last year, Trump and Carney shared a congenial tone.”I think the relationship is going to be very strong,” Trump said at the time. However, Trump this month dismissed the mega trade deal between the United States, Canada, and Mexico – up for renegotiation in July – as “irrelevant”.The two nations, along with Mexico, are set to host the World Cup later this year. A massive winter storm dumped snow and freezing rain on New Mexico and Texas Saturday as it spread across the United States towards the northeast, threatening tens of millions of Americans with blackouts, transportation chaos and bone-chilling cold.Shoppers stripped supermarket shelves as the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast huge snowfall in some areas and possibly “catastrophic” ice accumulations from freezing rain.Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned that up to 240mn Americans could be affected by the storm. At least 16 states and the US capital Washington declared states of emergency.”Take this storm seriously, folks,” the NWS said on X, predicting an “astonishingly long swath” of snowfall from New Mexico to Maine.More than 3,400 flights in and out of the United States were canceled Saturday alone, and more than 1,100 others were delayed, according to tracker FlightAware. In Dallas, freezing rain pelted the city and temperatures plummeted to 21° Fahrenheit (-6° Celsius).Houston Mayor John Whitmire urged residents of the country’s fourth most populous city to hunker down: “Be where you need to be for the next 72 hours.”Warming centres were set to open for those in need.State officials vowed that the Texas power grid was in better shape than five years ago, when it failed during a deadly winter storm and left millions without power.Snow also hit Oklahoma and Arkansas, where some spots already recorded 6” (15cm) on the ground, the NWS said. After battering the country’s southwest and central areas, the storm system was expected to hit the heavily populated mid-Atlantic and northeastern states before a frigid air mass settles in.”The snow/sleet impacts will linger well into next week with rounds of re-freezing that keeps surfaces icy and dangerous to both drive and walk on for the foreseeable future,” the weather service said. The US federal government preemptively announced offices would be closed Monday.”We will continue to monitor, and stay in touch with all States in the path of this storm. Stay Safe, and Stay Warm!” US President Donald Trump, who was riding out the storm in Washington, said on his Truth Social platform. The brutal storm system is the result of a stretched polar vortex, an Arctic region of cold, low-pressure air that normally forms a relatively compact, circular system but sometimes morphs into a more oval shape, sending cold air spilling across North America.Scientists say the increasing frequency of such disruptions of the polar vortex may be linked to climate change, though the debate is not settled and natural variability plays a role. However, Trump – who scoffs at climate change science and has rolled back green energy policies – questioned how the cold front fit into broader climate shifts.”WHATEVER HAPPENED TO GLOBAL WARMING???” the Republican leader posted on Truth Social. The NWS warned that heavy ice could cause “long-duration power outages, extensive tree damage, and extremely dangerous or impassable travel conditions”, including in many states less accustomed to intense winter weather. In New York state, Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul warned residents to stay inside amid frigid conditions: “Five or six minutes outside could literally be dangerous for your health.”She stressed precautions like protecting pipes, using heaters safely, and checking on vulnerable neighbours.Professional and collegiate basketball games have been rescheduled as a result of the weather.Brandon Buckingham, a meteorologist with private forecasting company AccuWeather, said snow and sleet had started to fall on Thursday evening in portions of the Central Plains, and warned that there was a danger of ice accumulating on roads, trees and power lines.”Dallas could see a half-inch of ice,” he said. “This is going to become treacherous very quickly.”He said residents should prepare for “power outages lasting at least several days” in areas where ice accumulates, even though the storm is expected to dissipate by early Monday. In Oklahoma City, which could see up to 12” of snow and a glaze of ice before the weekend is over, supervisor Morgan Mayo of the cafe Not Your Average Joe said customers were packing in on Friday morning to get out of the frigid temperatures: a low of 8F on Friday.”We’re going to do our darnedest to stay open” even during the weekend when the high is expected to be just 10F, Mayo said. “We have several employees who live in walking distance and are willing to brave the storm.”The storm represents the first major test for New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who took office just weeks ago.He told local news station NY1 on Friday that the city’s sanitation workforce would transform “into the nation’s largest snow-fighting operation” in advance of the heavy snowfall expected Monday, but that the city’s schools would be open Monday for either in-person or remote learning.Authorities warned of life-threatening cold that could last a week post-storm, especially in the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, where wind chill lows were forecast to dip to extremes under -50F (-45C).Such temperatures can cause frostbite within minutes. French President Emmanuel Macron yesterday vowed to speed up the legislative process for a social media ban on under-15s, with the goal of enacting it in September this year. “I have asked the government to activate the accelerated procedure so it can go as quickly as possible,” he said in a self-recorded video broadcast on BFM Television. He said he wanted it to be “applied from the start of the next school year”, in September. French lawmakers have been debating the bill for such a ban, following in the footsteps of Australia, which last month became the first country to prohibit children under the age of 16 using such popular – and addictive- platforms as Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. Their draft legislation is to be submitted to the French parliament on Monday. Macron said that, on top of a ban on children under 15 accessing social media, he also backed a ban on pupils having on mobile phones in schools. Source link
A gas explosion at a high-rise residential building in New York City triggered a massive fire on upper floors, killing one person and injuring at least 15 others, authorities said. The explosion occurred in a 17-story apartment building after reports of a gas odor on the 15th and 16th floors. Firefighters were already on the scene investigating the reports when the blast occurred, sparking a fast-moving quad-alarm fire that engulfed several upper-floor apartments. Chief of Department John Esposito said firefighters had been checking complaints of a gas smell when the explosion caused significant structural damage. About a dozen apartments were damaged, with active fires reported in 10 units on the 16th and 17th floors. Officials confirmed that one person was killed in the incident. Another victim was critically injured, five sustained serious injuries, and eight others suffered minor injuries. Authorities said the building had recently undergone renovations and that work on the natural gas system had been completed and inspected. US President Donald Trump has approved emergency declarations for ten southeastern states, as a powerful winter storm continues to batter large parts of the country. ‘I have just approved Emergency Declarations for Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Maryland, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Indiana, and West Virginia’, President Trump said via Truth Social platform. ‘We are working closely with FEMA, Governors, and State Emergency Management teams to ensure the safety of everybody. Stay Safe, and Stay Warm!’, he added. The president had previously approved emergency declarations for other states in the storm's path, including South Carolina and Virginia. These declarations allow for the temporary lifting of certain spending restrictions, enabling state governments to expedite resource provision and request federal assistance. At least 20 US states have declared a state of emergency, including Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Snow and ice cover an area of more than 2,000 kilometers across the United States, with the storm's impact expected to extend from Texas to New England over the weekend, a distance exceeding 3,000 kilometers.Large areas of the South are experiencing increasing power outages due to ice accumulation, which has downed trees and damaged power lines. Warnings have been issued that hundreds of thousands of people could be without power for several days. The storm has led to the cancellation of more than 13,000 flights and the closure of sections of highways due to hazardous weather conditions.A Source link
