Nepal holds day of mourning as families pray missing still alive

Nepal held a national day of mourning with candlelight vigils yesterday for victims of devastating glacial floods, as families of missing hydropower workers feared trapped in tunnels prayed rescuers might yet find them alive.The August 26 glacial and mountain collapse on the China-Nepal border killed at least 1,399 people, with more than 5,500 missing, including around 800 foreigners.Flags flew at half-mast and hundreds of people gathered for the vigils in the Nepali capital Kathmandu, as the nation marked the 13th day after death in line with Hindu mourning rituals.Hundreds of hydropower workers are among the missing, but the rescue of three of them from deep inside tunnels — two Nepalis on Friday and a Chinese man on Saturday — have buoyed hopes that more could still be alive.Nepal Army spokesman Raja Ram Basnet said rescue efforts were continuing at “the same tempo” to make sure “that no one is still stranded”.Entire communities have been swept away, with roads destroyed and homes demolished.— ‘Hope’ —But families of some of the missing workers who gathered in Kathmandu said the government must move faster.”We have a lot of hope,” said Reena Amatya Shrestha, whose brother is among the missing.”They say they are doing rescue. If the rescue is there, where’s the result? We need the result.”Australian tunnel rescue expert Arnold Dix, who is advising Nepali teams, said the operation presented an unprecedented challenge.”We are facing something I have never faced before,” said Dix, president of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association, in a post on social media.”Not one rescue, but multiple potential rescues, unfolding at the same time, in different places, each with its own dangers, uncertainties, and lives that may still be saved.”Foreign experts, including from China, India and Republic of Korea, are aiding Nepali teams in rescue efforts.”We are measured not only by the lives we save, but by the lives we refuse to abandon,” said Dix.Drone pilot Adarsha Raj Bhusal recalled sinking into mud after leaping from a helicopter into the flood-ravaged Upper Trishuli-1 hydropower tunnel in Rasuwa district days after the disaster.”The moment I landed I sank into the mud up to my waist,” the 24-year-old told AFP yesterday in Nuwakot district.”Other soldiers were there to help, but they were struggling just as much as I was. That’s how bad the conditions were… it was intense the entire way in.”— ‘New life’ —Nepal President Ram Chandra Paudel visited relief camps in Nuwakot, speaking to those left homeless by the disaster.”Today the entire nation is mourning this horrific disaster,” he said in a statement.”To everyone waiting for news of family members and friends, I want to assure you that search and rescue operations will continue.”With mortuaries overflowing, Nepal has buried hundreds of bodies in mass graves after taking DNA samples for future identification, according to police.Despite the gloom, there have been remarkable tales of survival.Chandika Shrestha, a 64-year-old Nepali woman, was pulled out alive from her mud-covered home in Bidur on Saturday.Her family had already held a symbolic funeral ceremony, believing her dead.”Chandika has got a new life,” her neighbour Buddhi Lal Dongol told AFP. “It would be so good if the others who are missing also came back.”Several families held last-rite ceremonies in Nuwakot to mark the 13th day of mourning, while Buddhist monks held prayers for the dead.”I have had to hold myself together a lot,” 63-year-old Kula Priya Nepal, whose son was killed at a hydroelectric project, told AFP.While the exact cause of the glacial collapse is unclear, climate change is accelerating glacial melting worldwide, increasing the risk of such disasters.Nepal, a largely rural nation of 30mn people that has contributed little to the greenhouse gas emissions driving global warming, has said reconstruction could cost billions of dollars.Its economy is already under pressure, with limited resources to respond to a disaster of this scale.The disaster has come just ahead of the anniversary of last year’s September 8-9 mass anti-corruption protests that toppled the government.Rescuers have retrieved 1,356 bodies in Nepal, while around 4,994 people are missing, according to the disaster agency.The toll in China stands at 43 dead and 519 missing, according to state media.Yesterday, local volunteer groups in Kathmandu packed utensils, blankets and clothes to be distributed to survivors.”As Nepalis, we’ve always been told that you look after your people,” volunteer Ashim GC told AFP.”And these are our people.”  Source link

Russia, N Korea open first road bridge across border

(AFP) Russia and North Korea held a ceremony yesterday marking the opening of the first road bridge across their narrow shared border, as the two Western-sanctioned countries deepen ties amid the Ukraine war.Russia and North Korea already shared rail and air links.The new bridge, which crosses the Tumen river, is designed to accommodate “a projected growth in freight and passenger traffic, allowing up to 300 vehicles to pass through it daily,” the Russian government said.”The launch of the first automobile route will further strengthen the connection between our friendly countries,” Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said in a video link at the ceremony.Video published by the Russian government showed trucks from both sides crossing the bridge, as crowds lining the road applauded.Russia and North Korea have heavily boosted military and economic ties since Moscow launched its Ukraine offensive.North Korea dispatched thousands of troops to Russia in 2024 to help ward off a Ukrainian incursion into the Kursk region, while Kyiv has accused Moscow of using North Korean missiles in its nightly barrages.The two countries signed a defence treaty in 2024 that provides for mutual support if either country is attacked.One of the world’s most isolated and repressive countries, North Korea bars most its citizens from leaving and heavily monitors incoming travellers.Russian tourism to the hermit state has increased in recent years, although Pyongyang sometimes closes its border at short notice.  Source link

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty discussed, in telephone calls he held on Sunday, with Pakistani counterpart Mohammad Ishaq Dar and Bangladeshi counterpart Khalilur Rahman, the recent regional and international developments.Abdelatty and Pakistani Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of resuming the implementation of the memorandum of understanding signed in Islamabad between the United States and Iran. They also stressed the importance of reaching a comprehensive and sustainable agreement that promotes regional security and stability and prevents the region from widening the scope of the conflict.Egypt’s Foreign Minister also discussed with his Bangladeshi counterpart ways to reduce the escalation and contain the repercussions of the crises and conflicts in the region, in order to contribute to restoring regional stability. Indonesia conducts water bombing to contain wildfires near future capital

(AFP) Indonesian authorities carried out a water bombing operation on Friday to prevent wildfires from spreading in the future capital city Nusantara, a city official told AFP.The archipelago is constructing a new capital city in Borneo, home to vast tropical jungle, to replace sinking and traffic-clogged Jakarta.The country is also fighting to contain wildfires that have burned large swathes of Sumatra and Borneo, which caused choking haze that has drifted across the border to Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines.Fires have been intensifying since mid-August in buffer areas outside the core area in Nusantara, where the city’s development is concentrated, Nusantara authority environment and natural resources deputy Myrna Asnawati Safitri said.It prompted authorities to carry out a water bombing operation to complement on-the-ground firefighting efforts, she added.”The function of water bombing is not only to extinguish fires but also to accelerate cooling in areas that have been extinguished by ground firefighters,” Myrna said.The operation will last until Sunday, but Myrna said it can be extended if necessary.So far, Nusantara’s construction has not been hampered by wildfires or haze, she said.Then-president Joko Widodo revived the long-proposed capital move from Jakarta when he won a second term in 2019.But construction has slowed down under his predecessor Prabowo Subianto, as the former general prioritised his welfare programmes including a free meal scheme for students.As president-elect, Prabowo said he wanted to “continue, if possible finish” the capital move, but since taking office in 2024 he has yet to express any plans to sign the presidential decree needed to shift from Jakarta.His spokesman Prasetyo Hadi said Nusantara should be ready to host the executive, legislative and judicial branches of the government before the move can take place, local media reported.  Source link

Vietnam, Myanmar agree to deepen defence ties during Min Aung Hlaing visit

Vietnam and Myanmar agreed yesterday to deepen defence and security co-operation, elevating the sector to a pillar of bilateral ties as Vietnamese leader To Lam hosted Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing in Hanoi.The two leaders agreed to expand co-operation in military training, exchanges between young officers, search-and-rescue operations and disaster response, while stepping up information sharing and coordination against crimes, the government said in a statement.’Vietnam stands ready to share its experience in national development, ensuring economic security and fostering sustainable growth,” Lam was quoted as saying during the talks, according to the statement.Both sides also reaffirmed a commitment not to allow any individual or organisation to use one country's territory for activities against the other.The talks were held during Min Aung Hlaing’s first official visit to Vietnam as Myanmar’s president. The two sides said they would strengthen political trust through more high-level exchanges and make better use of existing bilateral cooperation mechanisms.Vietnam and Myanmar agreed to expand economic, trade and investment ties, identifying opportunities in high-tech agriculture, food processing, telecommunications, information technology, digital transformation, energy and transport infrastructure.The leaders also pledged closer coordination within Asean and Mekong subregional frameworks, reaffirming support for peace, stability and freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea, the statement said.On Friday, Min Aung Hlaing visited a factory in northern Vietnam producing VinFast electric vehicles and telecoms group Viettel, underscoring Myanmar’s interest in expanding co-operation with Vietnam in technology, telecommunications and industrial development.  Source link

Over 599 Thousand evacuated due to East China torrential rain

Local authorities in China’s Fujian Province have evacuated more than 599,000 people as torrential rains continued to lash the eastern province for several days.  The provincial Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said 599,300 residents had been evacuated from vulnerable coastal and inland areas across the province. The headquarters activated a Level III emergency response for flood control, the third-highest level, while maintaining a Level IV emergency response for typhoon prevention. Meanwhile, several departments in Fujian Province urgently allocated 210 million yuan (about USD 31 million) for emergency rescue operations, disaster relief and post-disaster recovery in the worst-affected areas. Typhoon Saudel, the 18th typhoon of 2026, made its third landfall in Zhangpu County, under the jurisdiction of Zhangzhou City in Fujian Province, last Thursday, prompting the evacuation of tens of thousands of people amid warnings of strong winds and heavy rainfall. The typhoon also affected 128,500 residents across 53 counties in neighboring Jiangxi Province, forcing about 8,700 people to evacuate urgently. Jiangxi authorities activated a Level IV emergency response for flood control on Friday. CENTCOM announces targeting three Iranian crude oil tankers

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that its forces attacked three Iranian crude oil tankers today, after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched ballistic missiles toward two US Navy warships that were patrolling territorial waters.In a post on the social media platform X, CENTCOM said: ‘A US aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer successfully evaded multiple unjustified Iranian attacks. No US personnel were injured.’It added that, ‘Following the failed Iranian attacks, US Central Command permanently disabled two IRGC-linked crude oil tankers, the M/T Downy off the coast of Kharg Island and the M/T Stark 1 near Jask. US forces also completely destroyed the empty crude oil tanker M/T Kylo, also known as Noxen, in the Gulf of Oman. The vessel was struck at several vital points to render it inoperable after its crew had been instructed to abandon ship.’The statement said the three tankers were part of a clandestine, multibillion-dollar network that ‘funds the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and its regional proxies,’ adding that Iran had no means of defending the vessels.CENTCOM commander, Rear Admiral Brad Cooper said: ‘Let the message to the IRGC be clear: If you fire on two of our ships, we will impose a far greater economic cost on you by destroying three of your ships.’He added: ‘We will not hesitate to defend US forces and, if necessary, destroy Iran's limited and exposed oil fleet.’  Source link
