Fire at car parts factory in S Korea leaves 55 injured, 14 missing

A fire broke out around lunchtime at a car parts factory in the South Korean city of Daejeon Friday, injuring 55 people, including 24 seriously, while 14 others were unaccounted for, ​fire authorities said.The South Korean government activated a centralised disaster management system for the large-scale ‌accident after President Lee Jae ⁠Myung ordered ​the mobilisation of all available resources ​to deal with the fire and save lives.More casualties are feared, with 14 people missing. Phone data showed their locations near where the fire broke out, but officials said search efforts were hampered after the building partially collapsed in the blaze.Many employees were believed ‌to have been ‌in a second-floor break ⁠room when the fire started, fire ⁠authorities said. ⁠Some people were injured after jumping from the building to escape, officials added.As of about 6pm local time, roughly 80% of the fire had been contained, authorities said.Fire officials ​said the car parts supplier that owned the factory was Anjun Industrial, which said on its website it makes engine valves and is a supplier for Hyundai Motor and Kia Corp, among others.Officials at Anjun were not immediately available for comment.  Source link

N Korea’s Kim oversees naval destroyer, cruise missile test

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un oversaw tests this week of his country’s naval destroyer, claiming Pyongyang is in the process of “arming the Navy with nuclear weapons”, state media reported Thursday.The tests, including a launch of a sea-to-surface cruise missile, come shortly after Kim led a major once-in-five-years Party Congress, at which he renewed goals of a military buildup and vowed to forcefully respond to any threats.It also comes as the nuclear-armed North’s key foe — the US — launched its joint offensive with Israel against Iran, aiming to wipe out the Islamic republic’s nuclear programme, missiles and navy.Kim inspected on Tuesday a “Choe Hyon” class ship — one of two launched last year — and oversaw a “shakedown” or performance test, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.”The arming of the Navy with nuclear weapons is making satisfactory progress,” Kim said, according to KCNA.”All these successes constitute a radical change in defending our maritime sovereignty, something that we have not achieved for half a century,” he added.The following day he oversaw the missile launch from the ship, which was “successfully carried out,” KCNA said.The Choe Hyon is one of two 5,000-tonne destroyers in the North’s arsenal, both launched last year as Kim seeks to ramp up the country’s naval capabilities.A third vessel is under construction, which Kim also visited on Wednesday, according to KCNA.Pyongyang has previously said the Choe Hyon is equipped with the “most powerful weapons”.Some analysts said the ship could be equipped with short-range tactical missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads — although North Korea has not proven it has the ability to miniaturise its atomic arsenal.Pyongyang last week condemned the ongoing US and Israeli attack on Iran as an “illegal act of aggression”, claiming it had shown Washington’s “rogue” nature.Kim’s latest move involving the ship appears to be “intended as a show of force amid the ongoing Iran situation and ahead of upcoming South Korea-US joint military drills,” Yang Moo-jin, former president of the University of North Korean Studies, told AFP.Pyongyang and Washington are longtime adversaries but the US has mounted a push to revive high-level talks with the North in recent months.Reports and analysts have suggested the US is eyeing a potential summit between US President Donald Trump and the North’s Kim this year.After largely ignoring those overtures for months, Kim said last month that the two nations could “get along” if Washington accepted Pyongyang’s nuclear status.  Source link

North Korea released a rare image Saturday of leader Kim Jong-un's teenage daughter firing a rifle at a shooting range, adding to speculation that she is being groomed as his successor.Kim's daughter Ju-ae has long been seen as the next in line to rule the secretive, nuclear-armed state, and took part in a string of recent high-profile outings, including this week's military parade marking the closing stages of North Korea's key party congress.Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) released a photo of Ju-ae shooting a rifle at an outdoor shooting range, peering through a rifle scope with her finger on the trigger, smoke rising from the barrel.She was wearing what appeared to be a leather jacket, a garment often worn by both her and her father at major political events, symbolising authority and legitimacy.KCNA reported on Saturday that Kim presented new sniper rifles to senior party and military officials, describing the move as a gesture of appreciation and ‘absolute trust,’ without mentioning Ju-ae.He then visited a shooting range with the officials, where he fired the rifle and took a group photo, it added.South Korea's spy agency said this month that Pyongyang appears to have started the process of designating Ju-ae as leader Kim's successor.By underscoring Ju-ae's ability to handle and fire a weapon, the photos ‘suggest she is indeed receiving training as a successor’, Yang Moo-jin, former president of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul, told AFP.KCNA also said Saturday that Kim Jong-un's powerful sister Kim Yo-jong will head the party's general affairs department — a role analysts describe as akin to a party secretary-general.The Kim family has ruled North Korea with an iron grip for decades, and a cult of personality surrounding their ‘Paektu bloodline’ dominates daily life in the isolated country.  Source link

South Korea, China leaders to talk economic cooperation, Korean peninsula peace next week

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung is set to discuss ways to strengthen economic cooperation and promote peace on the Korean Peninsula during an upcoming summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing next week.South Korea’s National Security Advisor, Wiآ Sung-lak, said the leaders would explore practical collaboration across multiple sectors, including supply chain investment, the digital economy, environmental and climate initiatives, tourism, and cross-border crime prevention. “We share a common goal of achieving peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia,” he added. North Korea is expected to be a central topic on the summit agenda, as Seoul seeks to build momentum for dialogue with Pyongyang. The planned visit comes less than two months after President Xi’s first trip to South Korea in 11 years, which coincided with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju.  Source link
