Hezbollah urges Pope Leo to reject Israeli ‘aggression’ on Lebanon visit

The Hezbollah group Saturday urged Pope Leo XIV to reject Israeli “injustice and aggression” against Lebanon, in a message to the pontiff who arrives in Beirut this weekend.Hezbollah emerged heavily weakened from more than a year of hostilities culminating in two months of open war with Israel that began when the group started cross-border attacks against Israel over the Gaza war.A ceasefire a year ago was supposed to end the hostilities but Israel has kept up regular strikes on Lebanon, mainly saying it is targeting Hezbollah fighters and sites, and has maintained troops in five southern Lebanon locations it deems strategic.Under heavy US pressure and fears of expanded Israeli strikes, the government has committed to disarming Hezbollah, a move the group has rejected.”We in Hezbollah take advantage of the occasion of your auspicious visit to our country Lebanon to reaffirm from our side our commitment to coexistence,” read Hezbollah’s message to the pope, published on the group’s social media channels Saturday.But it also affirmed the group’s commitment to “standing with our army and our people to face any aggression and occupation of our land and our country”, adding that what Israel “is doing in Lebanon is unacceptable ongoing aggression”.”We rely on your holiness’s stance in rejecting the injustice and aggression our nation of Lebanon is subjected to at the hands of the Zionist invaders and their supporters,” the statement added.In a speech on Friday, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem welcomed Leo’s upcoming visit to Lebanon, saying he had tasked members of the group with delivering a letter to the pontiff that would also be published in the media.He insisted his group has respected the November 2024 ceasefire and called for an end to persistent Israeli strikes on the country.”Do you expect there to be a war later? It’s possible at some point, yes, that possibility exists,” Qassem said, referring to increased fears in Lebanon of a renewed, broader war.After visiting Turkiye, Leo is due to arrive in Lebanon today for a three-day trip that includes an open-air mass at Beirut’s waterfront which organisers expect to draw 120,000 people, as well as an interreligious meeting in the city centre.Qassem said Friday that “we welcome this visit at this pivotal moment, and we pray that the Holy Father will contribute to spreading peace in Lebanon, liberating it, ending the (Israeli) aggression, and standing by it and by the oppressed, as we have always known him to do”.  Related Story…

Israeli Occupation continues to violate ceasefire agreement by bombing areas in Gaza Strip

The Israeli occupation aircraft carried out bombing and shooting operations on Sunday, targeting several areas in the Gaza Strip, despite the ceasefire agreement being in effect.Palestinian news agency (WAFA) reported that the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) carried out intensive shelling and gunfire operations from helicopters, east of Bureij camp, in the central Gaza Strip.The Israeli occupation’s warplanes also carried out six airstrikes east of Rafah city, in the southern Gaza Strip.In Khan Younis, the occupation bombed a house in the town of Bani Suheila, east of the city. UN watchdog urges Israel to probe Gaza 'torture' claims

A UN committee urged Israel yesterday to set up an independent investigatory commission to probe claims of torture of Palestinians, and warned the situation had ‘gravely intensified’ since the start of the Gaza war.The UN Committee against Torture said it was ‘deeply concerned about reports indicating a de facto state policy of organised and widespread torture and ill-treatment’ in Israel.In a report published after a regular review of Israel, it ‘also expressed its deep concern over the disproportionate nature of Israel's response’.And it decried ‘a range of policies adopted by Israel in the course of its continued unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory’, warning that it risked leading to ‘cruel, inhuman or degrading living conditions for the Palestinian population’.The experts called on Israel to ‘establish an independent, impartial and effective ad hoc investigatory commission to review and investigate all allegations of torture and ill-treatment committed during the current armed conflict’.Israel should also ‘prosecute those responsible, including superior officers, and ensure the immediate entry of necessary humanitarian aid and aid workers into Gaza’, the committee members said.During the review conducted in Geneva earlier this month, committee rapporteur Peter Vedel Kessing told the Israeli delegation the experts had been ‘deeply appalled by the description we have received… of what appears to be systematic and widespread torture and ill-treatment of Palestinians, including children’.’It is claimed that torture has become a deliberate and widespread tool of state policy… from arrest to interrogation to imprisonment.’The committee report highlighted allegations of widespread use of torture methods, including ‘repeated severe beatings, dog attacks, electrocution, water-boarding, use of prolonged stress positions (and) physical violations’.During the review, Israel's ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Daniel Meron, rejected the allegations presented, branding them ‘disinformation’.  Source link

UN decries ‘apparent summary execution’ of Palestinians in West Bank

The United Nations said yesterday that the killing of two Palestinians, shot dead in the West Bank while seemingly surrendering to Israeli forces, was an “apparent summary execution”.”We are appalled at the brazen killing by Israeli border police yesterday of two Palestinian men in Jenin,” UN rights office spokesman Jeremy Laurence told reporters in Geneva, calling the incident “yet another apparent summary execution”.He said UN rights chief Volker Turk was calling for for “independent, prompt and effective investigations into the killings of Palestinians”, and for those responsible for killings and other violations in the West Bank to “be held fully to account”.The Israeli army and police said Thursday they were investigating the killings in Jenin in the northern West Bank, which was filmed from several angles, including by AFP.Videos circulating on social media and on television channels showed two men emerging from a building with their arms raised, surrounded by Israeli forces.They were then seen lying on the ground before being directed back inside the building. Gunshots rang out and the two men were seen lying on the ground.The Palestinian Authority named the two men killed as 37-year-old Yussef Ali Asa’sa and 26-year-old Al-Muntasir Billah Mahmud Abdullah.It said they were killed in a “brutal” summary execution and condemned the incident as a “war crime”.In a joint statement, the Israeli military and police — which oversees the border guard unit — said they attempted to apprehend “wanted individuals who had carried out fighter activities, including hurling explosives and firing at security forces”.Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir backed the forces who opened fire.The UN rights office spokesman said the incident came as “killings of Palestinians by Israeli security forces and settlers in the occupied West Bank have been surging, without accountability, even in the rare cases when investigations are announced”.He said “statements by a senior Israeli government official” seeking “to absolve Israeli security forces of responsibility” raised “serious concerns about the credibility of any future review or investigation conducted by any entity that is not fully independent from the government”.Violence in the West Bank has soared since Palestinian Hamas group’s October 2023 storming of Israel triggered the Gaza war.It has not ceased despite the fragile truce between Israel and Hamas coming into effect last month.Laurence said Israeli troops or settlers have killed 1,030 Palestinians in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, since the start of the Gaza war.”Among these victims were 223 children,” he said.At least 44 Israelis, including soldiers and civilians, have been killed in Palestinian attacks or Israeli military operations, according to official Israeli figures.  Source link

At least 11 killed in Israeli attack on Beit Jinn in Southern Syria

At least 11 people, including women and children, were killed and several others were injured in an Israeli attack that targeted the town of Beit Jinn in the Damascus countryside at dawn on Friday.The Syrian News Channel reported that a number of dead and wounded remain trapped under the rubble, noting that Israeli warplanes continued to fly over the road connecting the town of Beit Jinn with the Beit Jinn farm.For its part, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) said that Israeli occupation forces shelled Beit Jinn with artillery at 3:40 a.m., while a military unit entered the town, arrested three people, and later withdrew.SANA added that residents confronted the incursion force, which opened heavy fire, leading to violent clashes between the Israeli troops and local residents.At the same time, Israeli aircraft carried out intensive aerial patrols over the area, while warplanes dropped incendiary balloons following the clashes.The agency further reported that the town is witnessing a wave of displacement, with residents fleeing to nearby areas for safety.This escalation comes amid continued Israeli violations in southern Syria, in breach of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement and relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
