Al Sadd will begin their AFC Champions League Elite 2026/27 campaign against Esteghlal FC of Iran on Monday, with the Qatar champions aiming to make a strong start to their bid for continental glory.The 2011 champions stunned Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal in the last 16 of last season’s competition before suffering a penalty shootout heartbreak against Japan’s Vissel Kobe in the quarter-finals. Al Sadd will be confident of extending their positive record against Esteghlal, having won twice and drawn three times in their last five meetings with the Iranian side.Esteghlal are returning to the competition after last appearing in the 2024/25 edition. The Iranian club will be determined to improve on their previous campaign, when they failed to score in six of their 10 matches.Al Sadd coach Razvan Lucescu said his team were ready for the challenge and aware of the strength of their opponents. “This is a new and different championship from the local league. Esteghlal is a strong team and has good players,” the Romanian said at the pre-match press conference. “We must focus from the beginning of the match to come out with a positive result, and we must do our utmost to achieve that.”The coach said Al Sadd would need to maintain complete concentration, adding that while some players had remained in Doha through injury, those in the squad in Basra were fully prepared. “We have a tough match ahead of us against Esteghlal, and we must focus on each game as it comes, and I will give my best to achieve what we are striving for,” Lucescu said. Al Shamal face tough Al Ittihad testAl Shamal could hardly have been handed a tougher opponent for their AFC Champions League Elite debut, with the Qatari side facing two-time champions Al Ittihad of Saudi Arabia at Al Bayt Stadium on Monday.Al Shamal will become the ninth Qatari club to compete in the AFC Champions League Elite, while a victory would make them only the third team from Qatar to win their opening continental match. The North side head into their historic debut in good form, having started their Qatar Stars League campaign with two wins and two draws.Al Ittihad, meanwhile, will be eager to challenge for the continental title after missing out last season and believe they have the quality to overcome Al Shamal. Monday’s match will be the first meeting between the two clubs, although Al Ittihad have won their last two matches against Qatari opposition.Al Shamal coach David Prats said his team were ready for the challenge and relishing the opportunity to make their continental debut against one of Asia’s leading clubs. “The first appearance in the Asian Championship is a wonderful feeling, especially since we will be playing our first match against a great team with a history in the tournament, which is Al Ittihad Saudi,” the Spanish coach said.“We will face one of the best teams in Asia, Al Ittihad, and our preparations for the match went as they should, like any other match. The most important thing is to show good character and identity, and we will try as much as possible to focus and play strongly and show that we are highly competitive.”Prats acknowledged the strength of the Saudi side, particularly in attack, while noting the changes they have made, including the appointment of a new coach. “We know that Al Ittihad is one of the strongest teams in Asia, and they have made many changes, the biggest of which is the coach, and we also know their attacking strength,” he said.The Al Shamal coach said he hoped to use the pressure of the occasion as motivation for his players. “I want to turn the pressure into a positive force for the team. We want to compete and try to win. Our goal is to play, enjoy ourselves, and demonstrate the strength and identity of the North team in any competition we participate in,” Prats said.  Related Story Source link

Sheikh Ali bin Khalid al-Thani will lead Qatar’s challenge in showjumping. Qatar will field 12 riders across showjumping, dressage and eventing at the Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026, which will be held in Japan from September 19 to October 4. The riders have completed an extensive preparation programme, including summer training camps aimed at sharpening their technical and physical readiness ahead of the continental event.The showjumping team comprises Sheikh Ali bin Khalid al-Thani, Sheikh Fahad bin Jassim al-Thani, Faleh Suwaid al-Ajmi and Bassem Mohammed. Jassim Jaham al-Kuwari and Saud Ahmed al-Buainain will represent Qatar in dressage.Mohammed Jaber al-Nuaimi, Abdulaziz Ahmed al-Muhannadi, Mohammed Salem al-Marri and Mohammed Nasser al-Qadi make up the eventing team, which will compete in dressage, cross-country and show jumping.Bader al-Darwish, President of the Qatar Equestrian and Modern Pentathlon Federation, said the federation had provided the riders with the necessary preparation to compete at their best.“We are pleased to have reached this stage of preparation for the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. We have full confidence in our riders’ abilities, experience and potential to deliver strong performances at this major continental event,” he said.Al-Darwish said the three teams had benefited from a comprehensive summer programme, with training camps focused on technical and physical development.“We have an outstanding group of participating riders, and we look forward to seeing them translate their extensive preparation into strong performances and positive results. We recognise, however, that the competition at the Asian Games will be fierce, given the participation of the continent’s elite riders,” he added.The equestrian competitions will begin on September 21 with the team and individual dressage phases of eventing. The cross-country phase will take place on September 22, followed by the team and individual show jumping rounds on September 23.The dressage competition will continue with the team final and individual qualifiers on September 25, followed by individual rounds on September 26 and 27.  The show jumping team competition will begin on October 1, with the individual events scheduled for October 3 and 4.Qatar will seek strong results in both team and individual competitions, with the participation reflecting the growing depth and international experience of its equestrian riders. Al-Darwish said the federation was confident that the cooperation between the riders and technical and administrative teams would help Qatar make a strong impression at the Games.  Related Story Source link

Nouran Gohar speaks to Egyptian compatriot Malak Khafagy after her victory at the Qatar Classic.
