Five men were arrested by armed officers and later held on suspicion of preparation of a terrorist act. Police, who said they believed the incident was now contained, have not yet publicly stated who they assessed was involved. An Iranian-linked motive is considered the most likely, a source familiar with the investigation said, while a Russian sabotage operation or an Islamist plot were also being looked at. POLICE WORKING TO UNDERSTAND CIRCUMSTANCES”We are in the early stages of an investigation, and five men remain in custody,” Counter Terrorism Policing Senior National Coordinator Vicki Evans said in a statement. “As you would expect we are working closely with our partners to understand the circumstances of the incident.” Police said a 400-metre cordon was in place around the base as the bomb disposal unit investigated the vans. Local residents in 85 homes in a nearby village were evacuated and armed officers were patrolling the site. The British government, which has given authorisation to the US to use bombers based at Fairford to strike Iranian missile sites that were attacking ships in the Strait of Hormuz, said Prime Minister Andy Burnham was being updated on the incident. Burnham thanked the police and armed forces, saying on X: “I know today’s incident near RAF Fairford will be deeply concerning for local residents and for many people following developments across the country”. Britain said in July its armed forces were ready to protect the country from any attack after Iran’s Revolutionary Guards warned it not to allow US bombers to fly from Fairford, saying any base used to launch attacks would be a legitimate target. “The arrest in the UK was fantastic,” Trump told reporters, saying it was “an amazing job”. “We had them under investigation. They were looking to do big damage to our fort and working with the British worked out great … We had them under view for a long time, and we got them,” Trump added. On Sunday morning the base was blocked by armed police while large machinery also prevented access, and Reuters witnesses said security had been increased at other bases used by the US, with armoured vehicles and soldiers at the gates of RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall in eastern England. DECLARATION OF A MAJOR INCIDENTA local farmer told the Daily Telegraph newspaper she had alerted police after seeing the vans and men acting suspiciously as she drove home from a party. “I saw a group of Middle Eastern-looking young guys running off through the trees. Some of them had masks or balaclavas on, and they all scattered ahead of us as we drove back past,” she told the paper. “Some of them ran into the fields, and some of them turned to run towards the air base … I mean, you don’t see masked men running around at half one in the morning in the countryside near a secure air base and not have concerns.” Local councillor Tristan Wilkinson told Reuters there had been a recent security alert at Fairford and surveillance had been stepped up. “So there was a specific threat about six weeks ago from the Iranians on this base. At the time, there was increased surveillance around the area,” he said. A spokesperson for the US Air Force declined to discuss specific force protection measures at the base. “The 501st Combat Support Wing and our fellow UK-based Wings remain vigilant and will take appropriate actions to ensure the safety and security of our US service members, civilians, contractors, and their families,” the spokesperson said. British ministers have also previously briefed providers of critical infrastructure on the threat posed by Russia, with the government increasingly concerned about possible sabotage operations and cyberattacks. (AFP) France winger Bradley Barcola has become Liverpool’s second-most expensive signing after joining the Premier League giants from Paris Saint-Germain on Monday. A source close to PSG told AFP that Barcola’s transfer is worth “125mn euros (£107mn, $145mn) plus 20 million euros in easily achievable bonuses”.The total fee of £124 million is second only to the £125 million Liverpool paid Newcastle for Sweden star Alexander Isak.Barcola’s fee is the highest ever paid for a Ligue 1 player. It is also the 10th £100mn-plus transfer in Premier League history and the fourth such deal completed this summer.The 23-year-old is the third forward costing over £100mn that Liverpool have signed in two years. Isak arrived at Anfield last year and Liverpool also paid around £100mn to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. World number one Scottie Scheffler produced a final day charge on Sunday to overhaul Viktor Hovland and win the PGA Tour Championship for the second time. Four-time major champion Scheffler, who also won the season-ending Tour Championship in 2024, carded a four-under-par 66 to finish on 16 under and seal a three-shot victory at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.Scheffler started the day three off the pace following Saturday's third round but chipped away at Hovland's advantage before pulling clear down the stretch to clinch the 22nd title of his PGA Tour career, and the $10 million winner's check.’Today was a day in which I was fortunate to get off to a good start and then was able to make some birdies to kind of seal the deal,’ Scheffler said afterwards. ‘Just continuing to battle, day in and day out is something that I'm very proud of… coming from behind and being able to win tournaments is a really cool feeling.’Hovland, who had been chasing his second Tour Championship win after lifting the 2023 title, saw his hopes evaporate with a closing two-over-par 72. He finished on 13 under. Earlier, Scheffler had launched his bid for the title with a brilliant birdie on the par-three second, his tee-shot finishing just an inch from the cup for a simple tap-in.Another birdie followed on the fourth when he rolled in a 23-foot putt for birdie. There was a hiccup on the seventh with a bogey, but he pulled that shot back with his third birdie of the day on the eighth. Birdies on the 10th and 13th left him at four under before a bogey checked his momentum on 15.But he dealt the decisive blow on the 16th, when a sensational second shot from the bunker left him with an 11-foot birdie putt which he duly rolled in for a two-shot advantage. Writing on the wall Hovland had a golden chance to pull a shot back on the 15th, but his putt lipped out to leave Scheffler in control. The Norwegian missed another birdie opportunity on the 16th, but his putt curled agonizingly wide of the hole to leave him trailing by two shots with two to play.The writing was on the wall on for Hovland after his third bogey of the day left him trailing by three shots to leave Scheffler untouchable. It was a frustrating final day for Hovland, who had rattled in putt after putt in Saturday's third round on his way to a five-under-par 65. His sure touch on the greens deserted him on Sunday, though, with only one birdie made.Ryan Gerard finished in third place on 12 under after a closing 72. Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, who had thrust himself into contention with a dazzling seven-under-par 63 on Saturday, found the going harder with a closing one-under-par 69. McIlroy finished in a cluster of seven players on 11 under, five off Scheffler's winning total. England's Tommy Fleetwood, the 2025 champion, was one shot back from McIlroy, tied for 11th on 10 under alongside Australia's Adam Scott and Cameron Young of the United States. Source link

The Democratic Republic of Congo has recorded more than 6,000 confirmed cases and nearly 3,000 deaths from the country’s worst Ebola epidemic ever, according to the Congolese authorities’ latest toll .Since being declared in mid-May, the latest bout of the viral haemorrhagic fever has surpassed a 2018-2020 outbreak to become the deadliest in the vast central African country’s history.The current epidemic is being caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, for which no approved vaccine nor specific treatment exists.It rapidly spread across six provinces in the DRC’s restive north and east, plagued by a plethora of armed groups fuelling long-running violence in the mineral-rich region.According to yesterday’s toll from the Congolese health authorities, 2,911 people have died, while 1,366 more have made a recovery out of the 6,041 cases confirmed since the epidemic began.The response to the epidemic, already underfinanced, has struggled to keep up with the explosion in cases.With the state having long been absent in many parts of the epidemic’s epicentre in the eastern DRC, health workers have also had to contend with the distrust of the authorities from some within the affected communities.According to the Congolese health authorities, the Bundibugyo variant often causes apparently mild symptoms in its initial stage, which complicates detection.Most of the DRC’s previous Ebola epidemics have been caused by the Zaire strain of the virus.
