Seven commodity vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, down from 17 a day earlier and below the 10-day average of 15, preliminary shipping data showed on Friday, reports Reuters.Among the seven vessels that transited were two medium-range tankers, one very large gas carrier (VLGC), one Ultramax vessel, one intermediate tanker and two chemical tankers, initial data from shiptracker Kpler showed at 0315 GMT.Four of the vessels were exiting the strait, including the two chemical tankers, the medium range and intermediate tanker. The VLGC, Ultramax and the other medium range tanker were entering the strait.The figures could change as some ships typically switch off transponders during the voyage.Iran war mediators have placed renewed emphasis on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, with Tehran agreeing to draw up a list of conditions to restore normal traffic.Earlier on Wednesday, a senior Iranian source said Iran and Oman were still working on details of an agreement on the waterway after Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said the two countries had agreed on how to share control of the strait and its revenues.Meanwhile, 17 commodity vessels transited through the Bab el-Mandeb, another major maritime chokepoint in the Middle East, with six vessels entering and 11 exiting.  Source link

At least 49 people were killed and 33 wounded in South Sudan after armed cattle raiders from Unity State in the country’s north attacked a community of herders in neighbouring Warrap State at dawn on Thursday, officials said.Inter-tribal and inter-communal violence is common in South Sudan, where herders compete with each other for scarce grazing lands and water for their cattle. An abundance of guns in civilian hands in the country exacerbates the violence.The deadly raid in Warrap State started at about 5 a.m. local time on Thursday when assailants from Unity State and others carried out “a brutal attack” on a camp of cattle herders in Tonj North county, the state’s information minister, William Wol Mayom Bol, said in a statement.He expressed condolences to the families of the victims and appealed “for restraint as the two state governments establish cooperation to bring culprits to book”.Unity State’s information minister, Nyakenya Johannes, told Reuters the attackers were not all from Unity, but added that state officials were working hard to ensure peaceful co-existence between communities in both regions.South Sudan expects to hold a presidential election in December, its first since the country gained independence from its northern neighbour Sudan in 2011.  Source link
