The League alleged City inflated commercial income and understated costs over a number of seasons, which would have made the club appear financially stronger and potentially enabled it to spend more on player transfers and wages while remaining within the rules.The case has hung over the Premier League for years, raising wider questions about financial governance, competitive integrity and the League’s ability to hold its most powerful clubs to account.”Unless the Premier League take control and bang their heads together, and say, ‘right, this is it,’ it could take years,” Yasin Patel, a leading London-based sports law barrister, told Reuters.”There’s clubs now looking to sue for loss of income, a bit like the Burnley-Everton situation. That hasn’t been resolved yet, there’s an ongoing appeal.”He was referring to the decision taken by the Premier League in June to order Everton to pay Burnley around £35 million ($47 million) in compensation for the impact of Everton breaching financial rules in 2022 when Burnley were relegated. Everton rejected the findings and their appeal is to be heard in January 2027.”There’s others who will have been potentially promoted. There’s trophies that were lost, European places that could have been won or lost, even certain players signing for Man City, who may have been signed by Hull or wherever, they lost the opportunity of that player,” Patel said. GUILTY OF ALL CHARGESAn independent commission found City guilty of all charges relating to breaches of the League’s financial rules over nine seasons, as well as three of four charges concerning their failure to co-operate with the investigation.The club deny wrongdoing and have until Friday to lodge an appeal, which they have said they will do.No sanction has yet been imposed, leaving unresolved the potential consequences for a club who have dominated English football over the past decade.It is unclear whether the sanctions will be announced before the appeal is heard, and whether they would take immediate effect, with a league representative telling Reuters they could not discuss the process for confidentiality reasons.”I reckon their sanctions will be heard sooner rather than later,” said Patel. “But then potentially, because they’ll be appealing a decision, the sanctions won’t come into play until after the appeal is heard.”A senior official in one of Europe’s major leagues believes the issue could have major implications for the Premier League, saying that it could suffer as a product if many clubs start going after City.Alex Goodchild, a sports lawyer at Bray & Krais in London, said the various compensation claims created an “extremely messy” and complex web of proceedings.”Everton-Burnley were two single clubs,” he said. “In theory, you could have lots of different compensation claims being run on different tracks with different commissions… so it opens up the scope for inconsistency and fragmentation across claims.”I have seen suggestions from lawyers that maybe the Premier League will try to centralise and have one single sort of compensation place for the various parties involved (similar to a class action suit).” TOP PRIORITYFootball law expert Stefan Borson thinks the appeal, which will be heard by a new three-person panel, will be the top priority.”(I believe) that they’ve decided that the most expeditious way to get an outcome here is to say, right, there’s the findings on the liability phase let’s test those on appeal. Then we can come back and deal with sanction later. But then of course, probably suspended pending the appeal.”Patel raised the prospect of criminal proceedings.”If they’re going to be saying that certain top personnel have lied and misled the Premier League, the question is then: ‘Are these fit and proper owners as per the rules of the Premier League?’ Are they going to say ‘You are not fit and proper owners of Manchester City, and therefore you have to sell the club’.”He suggested the case could move beyond the realm of football regulation.”If these findings are correct, and fraud and (false) statements have (taken place), then is that a matter that should be investigated by the police?”Goodchild suggested the apparent leak of the league’s decision on Friday could hand City ammunition for a procedural challenge.”The leak does, to an extent, lend them some material because it is possible that an official at one of City’s close rivals could have leaked this to haul Man City into the sort of court of public opinion and give them terrible publicity,” he told Reuters.The prospect of relegation raises questions about City’s talent-laden squad. It is common for players to have relegation release clauses in their contracts, Patel and Goodchild said, and in the event of relegation another club could buy a player’s registration at a discounted price. Their Excellencies Egyptian Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Dr. Mohamed Farid Saleh and Egyptian Minister of Finance Ahmed Kouchouk said relations between their country and the State of Qatar have opened new horizons for bilateral cooperation, paving the way for long-term investments and increased trade and tourism between the two countries. Speaking to Qatar News Agency (QNA) on the sidelines of the seventh session of the Qatar-Egypt Joint Higher Committee, held today in Alamein under the chairmanship of HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani and Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Dr. Badr Abdelatty, Dr. Mohamed Farid Saleh stressed the importance of the agreements and memoranda of understanding concluded during the committee’s meetings. These included efforts to establish a joint committee for economic, trade and investment cooperation, as well as Qatar’s participation in investment opportunities in Africa in cooperation with Egyptian companies and the Sovereign Fund of Egypt. He noted that the meeting also discussed industrial investment cooperation, including Qatari investment in Egypt through the industrial investment sub-fund of the Sovereign Fund of Egypt. He welcomed the recent Qatari investment in the Ras El Hekma area, saying it would further enhance the area’s importance in attracting tourism to Egypt’s North Coast and the country as a whole. HE the Egyptian Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade also said the two sides discussed sectors targeted for growth in the Egyptian economy, as well as cooperation between financial and business centers in Egypt and their counterparts in Qatar. He expressed optimism about the future of bilateral cooperation, saying it would lead to long-term investments and increased trade and tourism between the two countries. For his part, HE Egyptian Minister of Finance Ahmed Kouchouk told QNA that the committee’s seventh session addressed a wide range of investment and industrial issues, providing an opportunity to strengthen bilateral coordination, as well as coordination on regional issues, within the framework of the ongoing cooperation between the two countries across various fields. In this context, he highlighted the signing of an agreement with Qatar’s Ministry of Finance on cooperation and coordination in areas related to customs policies, the exchange of expertise, and full digital exchange. He said the agreement would enable the two sides to exchange the information required on transactions and new customs policies, contributing to greater efficiency in customs cooperation between the two countries. Concluding his remarks to QNA, HE the Egyptian Minister of Finance said the cooperation aims to reduce costs and accelerate the procedures for exchanging and documenting information and documents in real time, thereby supporting the smooth flow of trade between the two countries. Al Wakrah and Qatar SC will kick off the 2026-27 Qatar Stars League season on Thursday at Lusail Stadium, while Al Rayyan face newly promoted Lusail at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium.The opening round will be played over three days, with all matches taking place at air-conditioned stadiums. Lusail will make their top-flight debut after winning the second division last season to secure promotion.The new season also brings changes to player registration regulations, with teams now allowed to field seven foreign players from a maximum squad of 10 foreign players. All 12 participating teams have completed their preparations and enter the new season with high hopes and ambitions.Al Sadd, the competition’s most successful club with 19 titles and the reigning champions for the past three seasons, will begin their title defence against Al Ahli on Saturday at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.The champions will look to make a strong start under new Romanian coach Razvan Lucescu, who replaced Italian Roberto Mancini. Al Sadd will rely on the likes of Akram Afif, Brazilian duo Roberto Firmino and Claudinho, and Spanish striker Rafa Mujica.Al Sadd held their pre-season camp in Austria, where Lucescu worked on preparing the squad for the new campaign, with the team also targeting a strong run in the AFC Champions League.Al Ahli, meanwhile, will be hoping to avoid defeat against the champions and establish themselves as contenders under new Spanish coach Borja Jimenez. The club strengthened its squad during the summer, most notably with the signing of French midfielder Benjamin Bourigeaud from Al Duhail.Former champions Al Duhail will face Al Sailiya at Al Bayt Stadium on Saturday. The club last won the league title in 2002-03 and will hope to challenge for honours again.Qatar SC completed their preparations with a training camp in Spain and strengthened their squad with several new signings, including Brazilian Bruno Tabata.Lopez said he was pleased with the team’s preparations ahead of the opener. “I am very happy with the start of a new season, and I am happy with the effort, work and commitment I have seen from the players during the preparation period, as well as the team’s ability to implement the ideas we have worked on,” he said.”During the season, we look forward to implementing what we have worked on, and we hope to succeed in achieving our goals,” he added.Al Rayyan will face Lusail tomorrow at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, with the eight-time champions looking for a strong start after finishing third last season and narrowly missing out on the title.Al Rayyan know their newly promoted opponents will provide a stern test and will need to be at their best under Spanish coach Vicente Moreno.The club is also preparing for its AFC Champions League 2 campaign in September. Al Rayyan have retained the core of their squad, renewing Brazilian striker Roger Guedes’ contract until 2031 and signing Ahmed al-Janahi from Al Gharafa. Debutants Lusail train ahead ahead of their opener against Al Rayyan. Lusail, meanwhile, know their top-flight debut will demand focus and consistency as they seek to prove they belong among Qatar’s best teams. The newly promoted side have strengthened their squad with Spanish striker Rodrigo Moreno, Argentinian defender Franco Russo and Iranian midfielder Omid Ebrahimi.Lusail coach Emanuel Mesquita said: “We are extremely happy to be among the best teams in Qatar and to have the opportunity to compete against them. The club appointed former Qatar international Younes Ali as coach and have high hopes that he can improve the team’s performances and results.At Al Thumama Stadium, Al Arabi will face Al Shamal tomorrow as both sides look to make a positive start after strengthening their squads during the summer transfer window.Al Shamal finished runners-up last season for the first time in their history and remained in contention for the title until the final rounds. They will be eager to build on that achievement under Spanish coach David Prats and continue their upward trajectory.
