Pakistan captain Babar Azam has been ruled out of the first Test against England at Headingley starting Wednesday, with Salman Ali Agha taking over as skipper.Azam has been unable to overcome an injury to his right hand after being struck by England Under-19 paceman Manny Lumsden during Pakistan’s warm-up game last week against a County Select XI. He promptly retired hurt in what a team spokesman said was a “precautionary measure”.It is the same hand he was struck on during the second Test against the West Indies earlier this month.Azam batted briefly in the Headingley nets on Monday but, while he has been cleared of a broken middle finger, he has not been passed fit to lead the side in the first of a three-Test series.”Babar Azam is not available, Salman will be captain for the first Test,” Pakistan coach Sarfaraz Ahmed told reporters at Headingley on Tuesday.”It’s not broken, there is a little bit of swelling on the finger. Hopefully he will be available for the second Test match.”Azam’s absence is a major blow to Pakistan as they begin their quest to win a Test series in England for the first time in 30 years given he is also one of their leading batsmen, with nine Test hundreds and a career average of 43.68.Saul Shakeel is in line to replace the 31-year-old Azam in the team after missing the recent two-match series in the West Indies, which ended in a 1-1 draw.Pakistan did win their two most recent Tests against England without Azam on home soil in 2024, but the surface in Leeds is likely to be vastly different to the extremely spin-friendly surfaces in Multan and Rawalpindi. Ecuadorian diplomat of Lebanese origin Ivonne A-Baki has joined the list of candidates for the post of United Nations Secretary-General, the UN General Assembly Presidency announced. Documents published Tuesday showed that Tonga had nominated A-Baki for the post, making her the eighth candidate in the race to succeed outgoing UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. A-Baki previously served as Ecuador’s Minister of Foreign Trade and held ambassadorial posts in Qatar, the United States, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, Syria and France. In its nomination statement, Tonga said A-Baki had led major international initiatives on sustainable development and intercultural dialogue, and built bridges between Latin America and the Arab world, Africa and Europe. With her nomination, five women and three men are now in the race to succeed Guterres, whose second five-year term ends on December 31, 2026. The nomination process remains open. On July 30, the UN Security Council held its first informal “straw poll” to gauge support for the candidates. At the time, there were seven candidates in the race. The secret, non-binding vote saw Costa Rica’s Rebeca Grynspan emerge as the early frontrunner with 10 “encourage” votes, followed by Guyana’s Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett with nine and Argentina’s Rafael Grossi with seven. Grynspan, who previously served as Vice President of Costa Rica and is Secretary-General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development, topped the first round. The other candidates are Chile’s Michelle Bachelet, Ecuador’s Maria Fernanda Espinosa, Guyana’s Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Argentina’s Rafael Grossi, Uganda’s Olara Otunnu, and Senegal’s Macky Sall. The General Assembly of Al Rayyan Club today elected HE Sheikh Al-Qaqa'a bin Hamad Al-Thani as club president until 2030, with Ali Salem Afifa elected vice president.The election took place during the ordinary General Assembly meeting, which was held with the required quorum and attended by representatives of the Ministry of Sports and Youth and active club members.The General Assembly discussed the Board of Directors' report on sporting activities for the 2025-2026 season. Members praised the club's success in football, including winning the Gulf Champions League title for the first time in its history, as well as its achievements in other sports. The General Assembly also approved the minutes of the previous meeting and endorsed the sporting activities plan for the upcoming season.Al Rayyan finished last season in third place in the Qatar Stars League (Doha Bank Stars League), qualifying for the AFC Champions League Two.The club will begin its new season against Lusail Club on Thursday in the opening round of the league. Al Rayyan will also compete in Group C of the AFC Champions League Two alongside Saudi Arabia's Al Taawoun, Jordan's Al Faisaly, and Oman's Al Nahda. Source link
