Saudi Arabia turned down Israeli requests to send planes to retrieve passengers: Saudi source
Saudi Arabia turned down multiple requests by Israel to send its own planes to retrieve passengers from a diverted flydubai flight, a Saudi source with knowledge of the matter told AFP Thursday.”They asked to send military warplanes. Two or three direct to Tabuk airport,” the source told AFP. “Turned down.” “Then asked to send [El Al] commercial one. Turned down as well.”The source also told AFP the message was communicated through the UAE and not directly with the Israelis. The comments come a day after a plane heading to Tel Aviv from Dubai was forced to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, after one of the pilots allegedly tried to crash the plane and kill everyone onboard. The Saudi source said the kingdom fulfilled its “international obligation” and assisted the passengers of the flight after they made the emergency landing, emphasising that nationality of the travellers had no impact on their decision. “We were to act the same way, regardless of the nationalities of flydubai passengers,” the source added. In recent years, Saudi Arabia has resisted pressure to join the US-backed Abraham Accords and establish diplomatic ties with Israel. Riyadh has maintained that it will not normalise relations with Israel without a clear path to Palestinian statehood. But the kingdom has long been seen as the most consequential potential addition to the Abraham Accords, with negotiations advancing at various points before stalling. Source link
The Saudi Cabinet renewed its firm rejection of repeated Iranian attacks on commercial ships and tankers, describing them as a dangerous escalation and a direct threat to maritime security and safety.Chaired by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Cabinet said the attacks constitute a serious violation of international laws and norms and a blatant challenge to a UN Security Council resolution requiring respect for freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. It also noted the start of institutional and operational activation of a multinational defensive maritime coalition aimed at strengthening collective maritime security and protecting freedom of navigation and key sea routes and straits. Syria condemned the Israeli airstrikes that targeted the Abu Al Duhur Military Airbase in the Governorate of Idlib. In its statement on Tuesday, Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the strikes as an unjustified act of aggression, a violation of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, in addition to being a dangerous escalation that threatens regional security and stability.Israel’s continuous attacks since December 8, 2024, despite Syria’s exercise of restraint and its work to consolidate stability and avoid escalation, the Ministry said, reveal the attempts to undermine these efforts and push the region toward further tension and instability. The Syrian foreign ministry held the Israeli entity responsible for the escalation and called on the international community and the United Nations Security Council to clearly condemn the aggression and to take a firm stance against the repeated violations.Syria will continue to defend its national rights and interests through legitimate means guaranteed by international laws and norms, affirmed the statement. The Asian Games held a torch-lighting ceremony in Tokyo on Tuesday as Japan counts down to the multisport spectacular that features more athletes than the Olympics. The 20th edition of the Games will be held in Nagoya and the wider Aichi area from September 19 to October 4.Japanese sprinter Yoshihide Kiryu lit the torch at Tokyo’s National Stadium, where the Olympics were held largely behind closed doors in 2021, a year later than planned because of the coronavirus pandemic.Tokyo hosted the Asian Games in 1958 and a similar ceremony will take place on Thursday in 1994 host Hiroshima, before the two flames come together in Nagoya on Saturday to officially kick off the torch relay. Kiryu said the continent’s biggest sporting event would provide a moment of joy after fans were mostly locked out of the Olympics.”For the athletes the cheers give you power,” he said. “The fans who come to watch will also see how impressive it is when it’s happening live in front of you, different from watching it on TV.”About 15,000 competitors and officials are expected at the Games. Among those in action will be Philippine tennis sensation Alexandra Eala and a pair of world-class talents in 15-year-old Indian cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and 13-year-old Chinese swimmer Yu Zidi. Athletes will stay in a variety of accommodation, including a cruise ship that will be docked in the middle of Japan’s typhoon season.”It’s not just athletics but lots of different sports, so it’s a good chance to discover what’s out there,” said Kiryu.amk/pst Related Story Source link
