Jurgen Klopp is widely expected to formally take over as the new head coach of the German men’s national football team, with the German Football Association (DFB) calling a press conference for Friday.Klopp, famed for his success during stints as coach at Borussia Dortmund and especially Liverpool, has been in talks with the DFB about trying to lead Germany – long a football powerhouse – back to prominence. On Thursday, the DFB invited the media to a press conference on Friday morning at 11am (0900GMT) at its Frankfurt headquarters, without specifying the topic. That is because the DFB’s governing bodies have not yet met to formally approve the deal with Klopp, according to reports from AFP’s sports subsidiary SID.Klopp, 59, is among the most decorated football coaches of his generation and is expected to sign a contract with Germany that runs until 2030, the date of the next World Cup.Since 2025, Klopp has been under contract with Austrian energy drink maker Red Bull as “Head of Global Soccer”, where he oversees the football clubs affiliated with the company such as RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg and the New York Red Bulls.According to German media reports Red Bull will release Klopp from his deal without a transfer fee, instead accepting a million-euro ($1.1mn) donation to Red Bull’s Wings for Life charity foundation, which supports research into spinal cord injuries. The DFB dismissed former head coach Julian Nagelsmann after Germany crashed out of this summer’s World Cup in disappointing fashion, losing to Paraguay on penalties in the round of 32.That means the German men’s team has suffered three straight World Cup debacles since winning their fourth title in 2014.Germany made first-round exits in both 2018 and 2022. They have won just one knockout match at the past five major tournaments, reaching the quarter-finals as hosts at Euro 2024.Klopp had successful coaching tenures at German clubs Mainz – where he was a player for more than a decade – and Dortmund. He then became a legend at Liverpool, where he coached the English side to a league title in 2020 – ending a 30-year drought. He also led the club to a Champions League triumph, their sixth European crown.Citing fatigue, Klopp stepped down from the Liverpool job in 2024. Related Story Source link
Qatar’s Rashid Saleh al-Athba made history by winning the country’s first-ever individual gold medal at an ISSF World Cup, producing a near-flawless display to claim the men’s skeet title at the Hangzhou World Cup on Thursday. Al-Athba edged Spain’s Jose Maria Mielgo Moneo in a thrilling final, hitting 35 of his 36 targets to secure the gold and etch his name into Qatar’s sporting history with a landmark victory in Hangzhou. In Hangzhou, al-Athba showcased exceptional consistency throughout the contest to clinch the gold. The Qatari shooter carried a perfect score deep into the final before missing only his final target, by which time the gold medal had already been secured. The battle for the top step of the podium remained intense, with Mielgo Moneo matching al-Athba for much of the contest. The Spaniard finished with 34 hits, missing just two targets to settle for the silver medal after an outstanding performance. China’s Lyu Jianlin delighted the home crowd by claiming the bronze medal with 29 hits. Lyu remained firmly in medal contention throughout the final before securing another podium finish for the host nation. Peru’s Nicolas Pacheco Espinosa narrowly missed out on the medals, finishing fourth with 25 hits. Japan’s Shotaro Toguchi placed fifth after prevailing in a tie-break against India’s Gurjoat Khangura, with both shooters ending on 19 hits. Italy’s Niccolo Sodi finished seventh, while France’s Nicolas Le Jeune placed eighth after both were eliminated with eight hits. The victory marks another major international success for al-Athba, whose composure and precision under pressure earned him the biggest prize in a final featuring athletes from seven nations and further underlined Qatar’s growing stature in world shooting. Dr. Meshaal Ibrahim al-Nasr, President of the Qatar Shooting and Archery Federation, hailed al-Athba’s gold medal-winning performance at the ISSF World Cup, describing it as a proud moment for Qatari sport. “This historic achievement reflects the tremendous and unwavering support that Qatari sport, particularly shooting, continues to receive,” al-Nasr said. “That support has played a vital role in enabling our athletes to compete at the highest level and consistently reach the podium at major international championships.” He added that al-Athba’s success was the result of years of hard work, careful preparation and the federation’s continued commitment to developing world-class shooters capable of excelling on the global stage. The World Cup continues on Friday with more rifle, pistol and shotgun medals to be decided as the competition enters its closing stages. Related Story Source link

Tim Cook will step down as the California tech giant’s chief executive this year, handing the top job to a company veteran as it navigates a technology landscape being upended by AI. The 65-year-old Cook, who ran Apple for 15 years after taking the reins from its visionary co-founder Steve Jobs, will be succeeded by John Ternus, a senior vice president of hardware engineering. The announcement on Monday answered long-simmering questions about a successor for Cook, who said he will step down in September to become executive board chairman. “It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be the CEO of Apple and to have been trusted to lead such an extraordinary company,” Cook said in a statement. He joined Apple in 1998, rising through the ranks and helping drive its success as chief operating officer coordinating the iPhone maker’s complex supply chain. He became chief executive in 2011 after Jobs left because of health issues. Cook is credited with expanding Apple’s product line and ramping up the company’s value to around $4 trillion based on current share prices. He was the mastermind of the strategy that made China the primary manufacturing base for Apple devices, with the vast majority of iPhones assembled by Foxconn and other contract suppliers in Chinese factories. “Tim’s unprecedented and outstanding leadership has transformed Apple into the world’s best company,” outgoing board chairman Arthur Levinson said in the statement. “His integrity and values are infused into everything Apple does.”Ternus joined Apple’s product design team in 2001 and became a senior vice president of hardware engineering over the course of the following two decades. He is credited with playing roles in an array of products including iPhones, iPads, the Apple Watch and Mac computers. Source link
