An analysis of rare earth-rich mud retrieved from the deep seabed off a remote Pacific Island earlier this year found medium and heavy rare earth elements accounted for about 54% of the total rare earth content, Japan's government said yesterday. But it did not disclose the size of the content or the deposits, saying the data was insufficient due to the limited duration and geographic scope of sampling. The Japanese scientific drilling vessel, Chikyu, completed a month-long mission in February near Minamitori Island, about 1,900km (1,200 miles) southeast of Tokyo, marking the world's first successful attempt to continuously lift rare-earth-bearing seabed mud from depths of around 6km (4 miles). The project comes as Japan seeks to diversify critical mineral supplies amid tightening Chinese export controls on heavy rare earths and related magnets, which are crucial for the defence and automotive industries.About 50 metric tons of mud were recovered. The analysis identified yttrium, used in aerospace, energy and semiconductor applications; gadolinium, used in magnetic resonance imaging and other high-tech applications; and dysprosium, used in high-performance magnets for electric vehicles, according to the Cabinet Office's national platform for innovative ocean development.Japan plans a month-long large-scale mining trial in the same waters from February 2027, aiming to dredge 350 tons of mud a day. The material will be dewatered at Minamitori Island and will be processed on the mainland to test separation, refining and smelting technologies. The trial is expected to verify the feasibility of domestic rare earth production, with a comprehensive assessment of industrialisation prospects due by March 2028, said Kazushige Kikuchi, project manager at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, which operates the Chikyu.Beijing imposed export controls on some heavy rare earths and related magnets in April 2025 and tightened restrictions on exports to Japan in January, and twice again the following month, targeting major conglomerates. The 2026 conflict in the Middle East is adding further pressure on fragile agrifood systems and global supply chains, threatening the availability, accessibility, and affordability of food, the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) QU Dongyu told the 38th Session of the FAO Regional Conference for the Near East (NERC38).The conference took place on Monday at the Organization’s headquarters in Rome during a “critical moment” for the region, underscoring the need to recognize “the immense importance of maintaining trade flows, and of ensuring access to adequate food for all, particularly in import-dependent countries,” Qu said in his opening statement. The Director-General warned that the significant disruptions to food production, trade, and distribution systems currently being experienced across the region were further compounded by global implications, “including rising energy prices and disruptions in fertilizer markets, which are increasing production costs and affecting agricultural productivity both within the region and beyond.”FAO Director-General said he had informed UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that the impact of the crisis would have “long-term consequences for agriculture.” Source link

European squash champion Victor Crouin believes the visibility of his sport will get a huge boost after it makes its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Tennis, table tennis and badminton all outstrip squash in terms of licensed player participation in France but Crouin is convinced this will now change. “The Olympics will give us notoriety,” the triple European champion and world number six told AFP. In France, there are just 22,000 licensed squash players compared to 254,000 in table tennis and over 1.2 million for tennis. So when squash was added to the Olympic roster after the 2024 Paris Games after years of bidding for a place, Crouin was delighted. “I couldn’t believe it was true,” he said. “This is now my career objective. As a squash player, I’ve always felt a bit excluded (from the Olympics) until now.” Places for LA are limited however to 16 male and 16 female players. “It makes for one less match to win and a better chance of a medal,” said Crouin, who studied economics at Harvard. Crouin believes his sport will make an attractive spectacle for fans. “It’s a spectacular sport. Squash is often described as a game of chess in a boxing ring,” he said. Other sports either added or back on the programme for the LA Olympics are cricket, flag football, baseball and softball. Source link
