The British Ministry of Defence announced that it will host a conference with representatives from 30 countries, which will continue over Wednesday and Thursday, to discuss the formation of an international mission to protect navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.The ministry said in a statement that the conference would allow for further detailed planning to reopen the strait as soon as conditions permit, following progress made during talks in Paris last week.British Defence Secretary John Healey said the goal was to translate diplomatic consensus into a joint plan to ensure freedom of navigation in the strait and support a permanent ceasefire. He added that tangible progress can be made.Talks that brought together representatives from more than 40 countries in Paris last Friday saw France and Britain lead a multinational mission to ensure freedom of navigation in the strait, as soon as conditions permit. GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed AlBudawi expressed his deep regret regarding the damage to Qatar’s embassy in Ukraine as a result of shelling. The GCC secretary-general stressed in a statement the importance of respecting the laws guiding diplomatic relations, which ensure the safety of diplomatic missions and their headquarters. He renewed the GCC’s position calling for a peaceful resolution to the Russian-Ukrainian crisis. He called for supporting the international community’s efforts seeking to end the crisis through dialogue, in line with the principles of international law and UN Charter. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia expressed its deep regret after Qatar’s embassy building in Ukraine was damaged due to shelling in the capital Kyiv. The Saudi ministry of foreign affairs said in a statement that the Kingdom stressed the importance of protecting members of diplomatic missions and headquarters in line with the Vienna Convention on DiplomaticRelations. It also renewed the Kingdom’s position, calling for a peaceful resolution to the Russian-Ukrainian crisis. The Jordanian ministry of foreign affairs too expressed its deep regret over the damage sustained by Qatar’s embassy building in Ukraine. The ministry’s official spokesperson, Fouad Majali, stressed the necessity of respecting international law and the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which guarantee protection of diplomatic missions and their workers. Majali stressed Jordan’s position, which calls for a peaceful resolution to the Russian-Ukrainian crisis through dialogue. Meanwhile, Somalia expressed its deep concern over the damage sustained by the Qatari embassy building in Ukraine as a result of the shelling of Kyiv.In a statement issued yesterday by its ministry of foreign affairs, Somalia reiterated its commitment to the fundamental principle of the inviolability of diplomatic missions under international law, stressing the need to protect diplomatic premises and personnel.
