Banned Vondrousova appeals doping suspension to CAS

(Reuters) Former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova has appealed against her four-year doping suspension to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the international body said on Monday.”CAS can confirm an appeal,” a spokeswoman told AFP when asked about the Czech 2023 Wimbledon champion, who was sanctioned by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) for refusing to take an out-of-competition doping test in December 2025.A hearing date has not yet been set, but proceedings typically take place in the months following the appeal. It would be held behind closed doors unless Vondrousova requests a public hearing – a very rare occurrence – with the final ruling issued several months later. The ITIA said that Vondrousova had failed to open the door to an anti-doping officer.Her suspension is due to run until June 21, 2030, and she has not played on the WTA Tour since January. Vondrousova has slipped from inside the world’s top 50 to number 153 in her absence. Vondrousova initially responded to the ban by saying she had “never doped”.The 27-year-old claimed in April that she was scared when the officer rang the bell “without properly identifying themselves or following protocol”. Players are required to log their whereabouts for an allotted hour each day so that authorities can conduct anti-doping tests outside of competition.She has said that her fear was partly due to the knife attack on her compatriot and fellow former Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova at her home in 2016. “In that moment, fear clouded my judgement and I just couldn’t process the situation rationally,” Vondrousova said. “After what happened to Petra, we don’t take strangers at our door lightly.”Last month, an independent tribunal ruled she had provided “no compelling justification” for refusing a test, noting she had taken her dog for a walk 10 minutes later. “This is a very unfortunate manner in which the player made a decision in the heat of the moment to refuse doping control, in a state of stress and anxiety, with significant consequences,” the tribunal said. ‘Harsh’ punishmentAmerican world number three Jessica Pegula called the suspension “harsh”, comparing it to the far lighter punishments handed out to Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek. “I just don’t think that’s fair. I think the sentencing is so harsh,” Pegula said at Wimbledon in June.Sinner accepted a three-month ban last year after reaching an agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in 2024. The Italian men’s world number one had tested positive for the anabolic steroid clostebol, before being cleared by an independent tribunal who determined he was not to blame. Six-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek took a one-month ban in 2024 after testing positive for a banned substance.”So I don’t quite understand the difference between that and then obviously what happened with Sinner and Iga. They justified what the rules were and why it was the way it was,” Pegula said. Vondrousova has a career high ranking of sixth, two months after her Wimbledon triumph three years ago. She also reached the 2019 French Open final and won a singles silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.  Related Story Source link

Iran says Pakistan’s army chief to visit Tehran today

Pakistan’s army chief Asim Munir will visit Tehran today to continue efforts to bring peace and security to the region, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Sunday, according to a statement by the ministry.Pakistan has taken on a mediator role in negotiations between Iran and the US aimed at ending the war which began with US and Israeli strikes on Iran in February.Two Pakistani government sources confirmed Munir’s visit to Reuters. The first source said that Iran and Pakistan were in direct contact.A second source said the talks would also address recent developments in the conflict, including US President Donald Trump’s threat of tougher sanctions on Iran.”He (Munir) will discuss peace under Islamabad’s MoU, Trump’s warning and the situation after the Pakistan-Turkiye-Saudi Arab Agreement and Houthi issues with Iranian leaders,” the source said.The visit comes amid heightened tensions as Iran threatens a military response to US plans for sanctions that could further put a strain on the Islamic Republic’s ailing economy.It will coincide with a Monday announcement on details related to the planned sanctions which US officials have said would be “the toughest sanctions in history” on Iran.Trump had warned of economic consequences against any country that provided “any type of lifeline to Iran” as he seeks to isolate the Islamic Republic.Oil shipments are at a virtual standstill in the Strait of Hormuz, with Tehran threatening to strike any unauthorised oil tankers that try to transit the vital waterway, and Iran’s economy is already under immense pressure from sanctions.  Source link

Jordan hosts Syria-Israel talks on de-escalation

Jordan on Monday announced that it had hosted a meeting to discuss de-escalation between Syria and Israel.According to an official source cited by Jordan News Agency (Petra), the Sunday meeting came in response to a request from Syria following the Israeli bombardment of the Syrian territories last week, which targeted the Abu Al Duhur air base in Idlib, and the rising tensions in southern Syria.The source emphasized that Jordan condemned the Israeli assaults on Syria as flagrantly breaching international law and amounting to a grave escalation, adding that Jordan fully backs the Syrian government’s efforts to protect its security, stability, sovereignty and territorial integrity.In addition, the source further stressed the importance of halting the Israeli vicious attacks on Syria immediately, Israel’s withdrawal from the occupied Syrian territories and respecting the 1974 Agreement on Disengagement between Israel and Syria.On the Syrian side, a diplomatic source at the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates told the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) that a high-level Syrian delegation, headed by Foreign Minister Asaad Al Shibani and comprising the heads of General Intelligence and Military Intelligence, convened Sunday with a high-level Israeli delegation under US mediation and hosted by Jordan.The meeting was intended to work out de-escalation efforts and support stability in Syria and the region.The source added that the meeting came in the wake of the recent Israeli bombing of the Syrian territories, coupled with the rising tensions in southern Syria.Additionally, the meeting was laser-focused on setting practical mechanisms to cease the Israeli attacks, as well as detentions, in addition to reviving the path of negotiations with the objective of reaching a security deal as a groundwork for any more thoroughgoing future accord.The Syrian side reiterated its unwavering position that the occupied Golan is Syrian territory, stressing that discussing that Golan’s final status, along with the pathway to that matter, is still premature at the current time, stating that the direct priority includes the pullout of Israeli forces to the lines in place before Dec. 8, 2024, and the reactivation and full implementation of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.The talks centered on the importance of supporting Syria’s stability and safeguarding the security of the region, including the ongoing endeavors to bridge the Turkiye-Israel viewpoints and ensure that this existing tension between both countries wouldn’t have repercussions on the Syrian territories.According to the source, the meeting focused on taking practical de-escalation steps concurrently with the exploration of avenues for returning to the negotiation path, with Syria confirming that any security arrangements must respect its sovereignty, territorial integrity and sovereign rights.  Source link

Sadd, Duhail open campaigns with easy wins

Defending champions Al Sadd and Al Duhail began their Qatar Stars League campaigns in winning fashion on Saturday. Sadd beat Al Ahli 3-1 at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium, while Duhail defeated Al Sailiya 2-0 at Al Bayt Stadium.Al Sadd produced a dominant first-half display to secure all three points, with Akram Afif, Claudinho and Pedro Miguel finding the net before the break. Erik Exposito scored a late consolation for Al Ahli from the penalty spot.Sadd’s defender Paulo Otavio was pleased with his team’s victory. “Good start for us. Could have been great because we conceded one goal but compared to out last two seasons it is much to start off winning with the first three points,” the Brazilian said. “This was the first week of the season, I think everybody will learn and keep improving on their levels and we’ll have a good season ahead,” he added.Afif opened the scoring in the 11th minute, coolly flicking a perfect cross from Miguel into the vacant left side of the net. Al Ahli goalkeeper Yazan Naim then kept his side in the game by saving Giovani Henrique’s penalty in the 35th minute. The spot kick was awarded after Yusuf Abdurisag was brought down inside the box by Benjamin Bourigeaud.Al Sadd doubled their advantage in the 44th minute following a swift counter-attack. Abdurisag broke into the area before Claudinho finished after the ball ricocheted off a defender. Miguel added a third in the sixth minute of stoppage time, heading in a cross from Afif to give Al Sadd a commanding lead at the interval.Al Ahli’s Julian Draxler had a chance to pull one back moments later, but failed to beat Meshaal Barsham when presented with a clear opportunity. Al Sadd continued to create chances after the break but could not extend their lead. Al Ahli were awarded a penalty in the 76th minute after a powerful Exposito shot struck Al Sadd defender Tarek Salman on the hand near the right post. Following a VAR review, the referee pointed to the spot and Exposito sent Barsham the wrong way to make it 3-1.At Al Bayt Stadium, Al Duhail also made a winning start as Edmilson Junior scored twice in the second half to secure a victory over Al Sailiya. The first half ended goalless, with both sides creating chances but failing to find the breakthrough. Edmilson opened the scoring in the 62nd minute, firing into the bottom right corner from the centre of the box after fine work by Oumar Sekou.The Brazilian doubled Al Duhail’s advantage just four minutes later, producing a left-footed finish from Mubarak Shanan’s assist. Al Sailiya came close to reducing the deficit in the 77th minute when Anwar El Ghazi’s powerful effort from the left side of the box struck the left post. The Red Knights held firm in the closing stages, with Edmilson’s second-half double securing a deserved three points.  Related Story Source link
