 Two attacks in central Mali claimed by Al Qaeda-linked militants have killed more than 30 people, local, security and administrative sources told AFP.Three sources – an aid worker, a diplomat and a security source – told Reuters, however, that the militants killed around 50 people, including members of pro-government self-defence forces and civilians, in the attacks yesterday.The two strikes come less than a fortnight after a large-scale, co-ordinated offensive by religious militants and separatists on junta positions, which plunged the west African country into a fresh security crisis.”At least 35 people were killed on Wednesday in near simultaneous attacks” on the villages of Korikori and Gomossogou, a youth official said.A security and an administrative source both reported more than 30 dead in the assaults, claimed by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM).WAMAPS, a group of west African journalists specialising in Sahel security, said the provisional toll was more than 50 villagers killed and several still missing.”Villages have been looted and some properties set on fire,” the group added.The Malian army said yesterday that it had carried out “a targeted operation against terrorist armed groups” in the area and around a dozen fighters were “neutralised”.It did not give details.The unprecedented assaults on April 25-26 by the JNIM and the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), an ethnic Tuareg separatist movement, targeted strategic towns including Kidal in the desert north, and Kati, a garrison town near the capital Bamako.Defence Minister Sadio Camara, the 47-year-old architect of Mali’s military alliance with Russia, was killed by a car bomb at his residence.Kidal and other towns and villages in the north were captured and are now under the control of the FLA and the religious militants, who have since imposed a blockade on Bamako.Since 2012, Mali has faced a deep security crisis fuelled in particular by violence from groups affiliated with Al Qaeda and the Islamic State, as well as local criminal gangs and pro-independence groups.On April 30, the JNIM called for a “common front” to “put an end to the junta” and usher in a peaceful and inclusive transition.The country has been under military rule since a back-to-back coups in 2020.  Related Story Source link

The Institute of International Finance revealed that global debt reached a record high of around $353 trillion by the end of last March.In its quarterly Global Debt Monitor report, the institute said there were signs that investors were moving toward diversifying their investment portfolios, noting rising international demand for Japanese and European government bonds.The report noted that debt ratios in the euro area and Japan were expected to follow a more moderate path as fiscal expansion continues, while US corporate bonds continue to flourish, supported by artificial intelligence-related issuances and strong foreign inflows.The report said that US borrowing was one of the main drivers behind the increase in global debt by more than $4.4 trillion in the first quarter of this year, marking the fastest rise since mid-2025 and the fifth consecutive quarterly increase.It also pointed to a sharp acceleration in debt at the beginning of the year among Chinese non-financial corporate borrowers, most of which are state-owned enterprises, whose borrowing significantly exceeded that of the Chinese government itself.Outside the world’s two largest economies, debt in mature markets declined slightly, while emerging markets excluding China recorded a modest increase, reaching a record $36.8 trillion, driven by government borrowing. OpenAI announced the official launch of the ChatGPT add-in for Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets spreadsheet models, making it available to all users globally after the end of the beta version.The company began testing the add-in in Excel last March, before making it available in Google Sheets during April, and the final version of the add-in allows the ChatGPT bot to be used directly within spreadsheets without having to leave the application.The ChatGPT add-in allows the creation of complete spreadsheets and data sets based on simple text commands. Users can create budget tracking, performance dashboards, and other forms simply by describing what is required, and ChatGPT automatically prepares the tables, formulas, and overall structure.The add-in also allows users to modify existing tables by sorting unsorted data, updating formulas, running new scenarios, and reformatting results by describing what they need in plain language instead of manually dealing with complex tools and formulas. Furthermore, the add-in enables users to ask direct questions about the spreadsheet content when they encounter unclear formulas or seemingly illogical results, pointing out that users can request an immediate explanation from ChatGPT about problems or errors.Professional users are expected to benefit most from these capabilities, especially those working with complex financial models and multi-page spreadsheets, but the feature is also aimed at ordinary users, as it makes creating personal budgets and tracking expenses much easier than starting from a blank page.The main advantage of adding ChatGPT is that it simplifies equation creation in Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets, one of the most prominent strengths of spreadsheet programs. Users can generate complex formulas through plain language, making it easier for both new and intermediate users to work with data and tables.OpenAI affirmed that the ChatGPT plugin within Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets is now available globally to all users via the Microsoft and Google Workspace stores.  Source link

The Bundestag rejected today returning to nuclear energy as an alternative to overcome fuel-related crises, most notably the crisis stemming from the war with Iran and tensions in the Middle East.The Committee on Economic Affairs and Energy in the German parliament said that the proposal to return to peaceful nuclear reactors had been submitted as part of a parliamentary motion by the Alternative for Germany bloc. The committee said in a statement that the proposal was officially rejected after other parliamentary blocs voted against it.The Alternative for Germany bloc had called on the government through the motion to immediately reverse the decision to phase out nuclear energy, halt the dismantling of German nuclear power plants, and make every possible effort to restart the last three nuclear units that were shut down in Germany. The proposal also called for examining the economic and technical conditions required to rebuild nuclear plants that have long been out of operation.  Source link

Turkiye’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan discussed regional developments and ways to preserve security and stability in the Middle East today with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.During their meeting in Ankara, the two sides also discussed bilateral relations and signed an agreement on mutual visa exemption requirements for holders of diplomatic and special passports between the two governments.Later, the two ministers chaired the third meeting of the Saudi-Turkish Coordination Council, held in Ankara, where they discussed areas of bilateral cooperation and emphasized the importance of organizing current and future cooperation within the framework of the council as an institutional mechanism to ensure sustainable progress in relations between the two countries.Both sides stressed the need to make use of the capabilities and resources available to the two countries and employ them in a way that serves their shared interests and mutual benefits.  Source link
