The US Open purse will top $100mn for the first time, a 20% increase on last year’s $85mn that the US Tennis Association no doubt hopes will quiet the kind of protests over player compensation that erupted at the French Open and Wimbledon.The USTA said Thursday that the total player compensation package at this year’s tournament would be a record $108mn, with the men’s and women’s singles champions earning $5.5mn each.Players in the first round will receive $140,000 via the purse increases spread across all rounds and competitions, including doubles and the wheelchair tournament.The USTA’s announcement coincided with a joint announcement by all four Grand Slams – the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open – of the creation of a Grand Slam player advisory council “to serve as the forum for direct communication, feedback and collaboration between the Grand Slams and players”.Top players, including world number ones Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka, limited their availability to media before the French Open and Wimbledon in protest of perceived low prize money.The Grand Slams said the new player council will launch after the US Open.”The Grand Slams are currently shaping the Council’s initial composition, framework and operating structure with player input,” the statement said. “Interested players will be invited to apply and those appointed to the Council will address the full range of Grand Slam sporting matters.”USTA chairman Brian Vahaly said the new council will provide recommendations on how the US federation, which organizes the US Open, should design its new Player Support Program, which will be started with an initial $2mn that is part of the announced US Open compensation package.The program will be aimed at complementing existing end of career pension funds as well as providing a range of benefits supporting players through “mid-career life events and retirement transitions”.”The US Open has a long history of listening to players, and this player support program and Council builds on that commitment. We look forward to working directly with players to better understand the opportunities and challenges they face, and to continue finding meaningful ways to support them both on and off the court,” said Vahaly.USTA chief executive Craig Tiley called the purse increase and creation of the council “a significant first step in a multi-year investment in athletes as the US Open continues to be the best economic opportunity for players and the most valuable platform for players, fans and partners.” A seat at the tableAmerican Ben Shelton, ranked sixth in the world, welcomed the creation of the player council.”Having a seat at the table with the Grand Slams is something we have wanted for some time, so I’m really pleased to see this council come together,” he said in a statement. “It gives us, as players, a real opportunity to have a voice, contribute to the conversation and help shape the tournaments beyond what happens on the court.”While Sabalenka and her fellow millionaire stars were accused by some of greed in demanding more prize money, she insisted at Wimbledon this year that they were fighting on behalf of lower ranked players, who do not enjoy the same rewards and benefits that come with being at the top of the sport.”Listen, we do it for the tour, we don’t do it for ourselves. We do it for the rest of the players who are suffering to even hire a coach,” she said.  Related Story Source link

Turkiye said yesterday it would seek an Interpol red notice for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as part of a domestic criminal case linked to an attack on activists seeking to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.Nato member Turkiye has been one of the fiercest critics of Israel’s assault on Gaza and has previously issued domestic arrest warrants for Netanyahu over the war there. It has repeatedly called for international measures against Israel over what Ankara calls its violations of human rights and international law. Israel denies those charges. In May, Israeli forces opened fire on at least two vessels from the Global Sumud Flotilla sailing towards Gaza as it was making a renewed attempt to deliver aid to the enclave after earlier missions were intercepted by Israel in international waters.In a post on X, Turkish Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said arrest warrants had been issued for Netanyahu and another suspect on charges that included genocide, crimes against humanity and torture as part of a case against 35 people over the Israeli interception in international waters.”In line with the arrest warrants issued against Benjamin Netanyahu… our justice ministry has requested that the interior ministry issue (Interpol) red notices for them so that they may be sought internationally,” Gurlek said.Turkiye will use all available legal mechanisms to ensure Israel is held accountable for its crimes in Gaza, he added.A red notice is a request to police forces worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition.Interpol reviews requests submitted by member states before deciding whether to issue red notices.Asked about Gurlek’s statement, Netanyahu’s office said: “(Turkish President Tayyip) Erdogan’s pathetic attempt to intimidate the leaders and soldiers of Israel, the only true democracy in the Middle East, will go nowhere.” Turkiye and Israel also traded barbs this week over Syria, where Israel carried out airstrikes on an air base it said Turkish troops could be deployed to, drawing condemnation from Ankara and criticism from the US. Syria has said there were no plans to deploy Turkish troops to the base.Turkiye’s influence in Syria as an ally of Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has stirred Israeli alarm since Sharaa toppled veteran leader Bashar al-Assad in 2024. Ankara has said Israeli rhetoric against Turkiye and its actions in Syria are fuelled by the approach of a parliamentary election in Israel in October.  Source link

(Reuters) Israeli forces shot dead a Palestinian man yesterday in the city of Jenin, in the north of the occupied West Bank, with the military saying he had attempted to stab a soldier.In a separate incident in the southern West Bank, Israeli settler gunfire killed a 17-year-old, the Palestinian health ministry said.In Jenin, 58-year-old Fathi Zidan Hazem, “died from injuries sustained after being shot by Israeli forces early Friday,” the Palestinian health ministry said in a statement, adding that Israel was withholding his body.Hazem was a retired colonel in the Palestinian National Security Forces.In April 2022, after his son, Raad Hazem, carried out a shooting spree in Tel Aviv in which he killed three Israelis and wounded several others, Israeli authorities demanded that Fathi Hazem hand himself in.His son was shot dead by Israeli forces after a massive manhunt.A second son, Abdul Rahman Hazem, was killed during an Israeli military raid targeting alleged militants in the Jenin refugee camp in September 2022.AFP footage from the scene yesterday showed a pool of blood and bullets scattered among groceries in the family’s home.A Palestinian eyewitness, who declined to give her name to AFP, said Israeli forces raided her neighbour’s house in the early hours and told Hazem to raise his hands, which he refused to do.”He then attacked them with a knife, and they shot him seven times in front of his 10-year-old son. They dragged him down the stairs and took him with them,” she said.Meanwhile, in the Palestinian town of Sair, near the southern city of Hebron, “17-year-old Karim Sanad Raja Shalaldeh was killed by settler gunfire” during an attack, the Palestinian health ministry said.A family member and a medical source at the Al-Mezan Hospital in Hebron confirmed his death.The attack also left a 70-year-old man injured, according to Palestinian official news agency Wafa.The Israeli military said troops were dispatched to the area after a report of Palestinians throwing rocks at “Israeli civilians who were present in the area without advanced authorisation.””As a result of the rock hurling, Israeli civilians were injured,” it said, adding that “a security official opened fire in the area, and there are Palestinian casualties as a result of the shooting.”The military told AFP the “security official” is a member of a rapid response security squad for a West Bank settlement.It said “soldiers operated to disperse the confrontation and removed the Israeli civilians from the area.”Violence in the West Bank, occupied by Israel since 1967, has surged since the Gaza war began on October 7, 2023.Since then, at least 1,099 Palestinians, including militants, have been killed by Israeli troops or settlers, according to Palestinian figures.Official Israeli data shows that at least 48 Israelis, both civilians and security personnel, have been killed in attacks by Palestinians or during Israeli military operations.  Source link

Britain, Canada, and Australia on Friday condemned as “shameful” Israel’s decision to close an investigation into the death of seven aid workers killed in Gaza in 2024.The World Central Kitchen employees — three Britons, a dual US-Canadian national, a Pole, an Australian, and a Palestinian — died in a drone strike on their vehicle convoy after overseeing the unloading of a food aid shipment.Israel’s military called the incident a “tragic mistake”.”In the more than two years since, we have been pressing for Israel to swiftly and thoroughly consider the case and hold those responsible to account,” the three nations said in a joint statement.”The announcement by the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) on 19 August 2026 that it would not pursue criminal investigations into this strike, without further explanation, is shameful,” it said.The incident in April 2024 sparked global outrage and renewed calls to ensure the safety of aid workers in Gaza.”Announcing this decision on World Humanitarian Day, while the world honoured the courage and sacrifice of humanitarians, was particularly egregious,” the joint statement added.The Israeli military acknowledged a series of errors at various levels of command, but a preliminary investigation concluded on Wednesday that there was no “reasonable suspicion of criminal misconduct”.”Israel extends its condolences to the families of the seven World Central Kitchen aid workers… who tragically lost their lives under deeply regrettable circumstances,” Israel’s foreign ministry posted on X yesterday.It said the decision not to launch a criminal probe “was made by Israel’s independent military prosecution authorities on the basis of strict professional and legal considerations”.”We remain committed to the safety of humanitarian personnel, compliance with international humanitarian law and preventing such tragedies from recurring,” it added.The US-based World Central Kitchen condemned the decision not to launch a criminal investigation, calling it “inconsistent with the full truth and deeply offensive”.It demanded an independent commission to investigate the airstrikes “because the IDF cannot credibly investigate its own conduct”.On Thursday, Australia expressed outrage at the closure of the investigation and summoned Israel’s ambassador to the country.  Source link

(AFP) US says details of economic curbs to come on MondayChina rejects US sanctions move, calls for dialogue to resolve issuesIran said yesterday that its response to any new US threats would be “devastating” after Washington pledged to impose the toughest financial penalties in history with the aim of toppling the Iranian leadership. US Treasury chief Scott Bessent said he would give details on Monday of the planned sanctions, which follow a warning from President Donald Trump of economic consequences against any country that provided “any type of lifeline to Iran.” The chief of staff of Iran’s Armed Forces, Major General Ali Abdollahi, said the Islamic Republic’s reaction would be broad and decisive. “With preparedness across land, sea, air, air defence and cyberspace, Iran’s armed forces will respond to the enemy’s new threats with crushing, punishing and devastating responses,” Abdollahi was quoted as saying by Iranian media. Iran’s parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the country’s main negotiator in mediated talks with the United States, said Washington appeared to have concluded it could not prevail in its direct military confrontation. “We must make plans to deal with the unjust sanctions so that we can overcome them,” he said in neighbouring Iraq, accusing the US and Israel of resorting to what he said was economic and “cognitive” warfare. But, speaking to Iranian and Iraqi businesspeople late on Thursday, Ghalibaf acknowledged the strain on Iran’s economy. “No matter how much military power we have, we won’t survive if people are hungry and we don’t have financial turnover, economic growth and national production,” Ghalibaf said, according to official news agency IRNA. Oil prices edged lower yesterday but were on track for a second weekly gain after rising on Thursday following the new US sanctions threat. “I’m not sure why oil has popped up on this,” Bessent told CNBC. “If we are doing the maximum economic pressure, then that means that likely there will not be a large-scale kinetic restart,” he said, using a term referring to military force. Bessent told CNBC: “We are going to collapse this regime. It is time for our allies and the rest of the world to make a decision,” he said, describing a naval blockade reimposed on Iran in July and the “toughest sanctions in history” as a “one-two punch”.  Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi was defiant in a post on X that referenced previous U.S. efforts to apply economic pressure to Iran and Trump’s comments at the start of the war. “14 years ago: ‘Most crippling sanctions in history.’ Failed. 8 years ago: ‘Maximum pressure.’ Failed. 5 months ago: ‘Unconditional surrender.’ Failed. Today: ‘Most crushing economic operation ever.’ Bound to fail. We have seen this movie before. Same bull. Different bullies,” he posted. At home, Trump is under pressure to end the war, with high fuel prices dragging down his approval ratings and potentially threatening his Republican Party’s control of Congress in midterm elections in November. China said on Friday that US “sanctions and pressure” would not resolve the Middle East conflict, after Washington urged governments including Beijing to join efforts to isolate the Iranian economy. The United States has vowed it would “collapse” the Iranian regime with its threatened campaign, which Tehran has branded as “economic terrorism” doomed to fail, nearly six months since their war began. Asked about US President Donald Trump’s threats, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian told reporters that “sanctions and pressure will not help resolve the issue”. “China calls on all relevant parties to take responsible measures and resolve the problem through political and diplomatic means,” he said. Spokesman Lin reiterated the need for all parties to take “responsible measures” in resolving the war, when he was asked about Bessent’s comments.“China opposes illegal unilateral sanctions that have no basis in international law and are not authorised by the UN Security Council,” Lin said.  Source link
