Iran president says time to end war while in position of strength

(AFP) Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said yesterday it was time to end the months-long Middle East war with the United States because Tehran appeared to be in a stronger position than Washington. Talks between the decades-old foes remain on hold, with both sides in the war started by the US and Israel in February locked in a stalemate. Tehran is keeping the key Strait of Hormuz partially shut and Washington is persisting with a naval counter-blockade of Iran. “It is better that we bring the war to an end now as we are in a position of power and dignity,” Pezeshkian said in a meeting with doctors. “The whole world acknowledges our victory and emphasises that America has attacked our schools, hospitals and infrastructure in violation of all regulations and is hated around the world.” Pezeshkian also defended a memorandum of understanding agreed with the US in June aimed at ending the war, claiming it did not signal a defeat for Tehran. “They cannot find even a single clause in this agreement that indicates capitulation. All the commitments concern the other side,” he said. His remarks come weeks after Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said he had approved the deal to end the war despite having “different views”.Hardline lawmakers in Iran’s parliament have also criticised the government over the deal, accusing it of giving concessions to the US, mostly over the re-opening of the strategic Hormuz Strait. —AFP  Source link

Oman, Iran FM discuss navigation in Strait of Hormuz

Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad al-Busaidi and his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araqchi, discussed the latest developments regarding navigation in the Strait of Hormuz in a telephone call yesterday. The two ministers emphasised the importance of continuing discussions to reach practical understandings that support the resumption of freedom of navigation, the smooth flow of traffic, and the security and stability of the region.They also discussed the latest regional developments and ways to create the appropriate conditions for resuming dialogue and negotiations, with the aim of bridging differences and reaching peaceful solutions to outstanding issues that take into account the interests of all parties.  Source link

Russell takes pole for Dutch GP sprint

Mercedes driver George Russell clinched pole position for Saturday’s sprint race at the Dutch Grand Prix, setting the fastest qualifying lap time ahead of current world champion Lando Norris.Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc will be third on the grid ahead of Oscar Piastri in the second McLaren. Current world championship leader Kimi Antonelli was a surprisingly low fifth in qualifying after setting the fastest time in practice in his Mercedes.Back for the first race after the tradional month-long summer break, Russell set a time of one minute and 11.567 seconds, 0.041 seconds faster than Leclerc, ahead of what looks like being a knife-edge battle all weekend between the top teams.”The lap felt really good, to be honest. It all came together nicely,” said Russell. “I’m really happy to come back. It’s been a little while since I’ve done one of these interviews,” added Russell, who won the first Grand Prix of the season but has since fallen off the pace.Home favourite Max Verstappen, roared on by an army of orange-clad fans, qualified in sixth in his Red Bull. After rain early in the morning, the track had dried out, but Antonelli appeared to have grip issues, spinning in the first qualifying session. ‘Special send off’Earlier Friday, Antonelli had laid down the gauntlet to the other teams, turning in the fastest lap in testing conditions at the only practice session. The Dutch Grand Prix, coming a month after the last race in Hungary, comes with every sign the championship could go down to the wire in the second half of the season.Antonelli, who turns 20 next week, has a 50-point advantage over seven-time world champion Hamilton, at 41 more than twice his age. Antonelli and Mercedes dominated the first half of the season, with the prodigy picking up wins in six of the 11 races, including five consecutive chequered flags.But the chasing pack have brought successful upgrades to their cars, with Mercedes admitting they are “out of sync” in terms of improvements to their own package. McLaren are hoping to build on their triumph at the last Grand Prix before the summer break, when Norris secured his first win of the season.The papaya outfit have strong form at Zandvoort, with Piastri winning in 2025 and Norris himself the year before. Ferrari have also shown signs they can compete at the front of the grid, with Hamilton declaring himself the fittest he has ever been after a summer break spent in the gym.Verstappen can never be counted out, fresh from the news that he has extended his contract with Red Bull until 2030. The hordes of Max fans will be hoping Verstappen can deliver on his promise to give them a “special send-off” at the last Grand Prix to be staged at Zandvoort.The Dutch seaside resort will not be on the Formula One calendar from next year, after promoters pulled the plug. “Thanks to the fans. You guys always give us a great race and it’s a very unique circuit,” Russell told the crowd.  Related Story Source link

Syria mulls joining Makkah defence pact

Syria is considering joining the Makkah Agreement for Joint Defence but has not yet issued a final decision, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani (pictured) confirmed yesterday, indicating that his country will make its decision on this matter at a later date. The official Syrian news channel quoted al-Shaibani’s remarks during his official visit to Islamabad, in which he stressed Syria’s rejection of any Israeli dictates regarding its alliances, adding that his country is sovereign and that Israel should not dictate to Damascus its alliances or partnerships.Al-Shaibani indicated that it is still too early to discuss any strategic agreement, noting that Syria’s first priority is to stop Israeli attacks. On another note, he explained that Damascus and Islamabad agreed to reactivate the joint ministerial committee, continue direct flights, establish a business council, and organise an investment forum.He affirmed that both sides share the same vision and aspire to elevate bilateral relations to the highest level, emphasising that his country’s new foreign policy focuses on reconstruction, economic cooperation, and building stronger ties with regional and international partners.Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan signed the “Makkah Agreement for Joint Defence” on August 7 during a trilateral summit held in Makkah.The joint statement issued after the summit indicated that the “Makkah Agreement for Joint Defence” aims to enhance joint deterrence against any aggression and stipulates that any armed attack on any of the three countries is considered an attack on all three. The agreement also aims to develop all aspects of defence cooperation among them.  Source link

At least 2 teens seriously wounded in sword attack at Swedish school

At least two teenagers were seriously wounded after a sword-wielding attacker entered a high school in central Sweden, authorities said, while media reported the perpetrator had been shot by police.Regional healthcare director Jonas Cederberg told AFP two ‘seriously wounded’ people had been admitted to hospital. A third person whose injuries had yet to be ascertained was in the process of being brought to hospital.The two seriously wounded were boys between the ages of 12 and 17, one of whom was in emergency surgery though both were in stable condition, the healthcare authority said on its website.’An assailant armed with a sword has entered Brinellskolan and wounded several people,’ the Fagersta municipality said in a statement, adding that the assailant had been detained by police.Police said they had received reports of the attack just after 2:00 pm.Students, just back from their summer holidays, were still in lockdown at the school more than three hours later, said public broadcaster SVT's reporter from the scene.The local authority said a little later that the lockdown had been lifted.The local authority did not specify how many people had been wounded but said in a statement that police were still searching the school and that several other schools in the area had been locked down.The local authority postponed a news conference initially scheduled for 5:00pm, saying ‘a rescue operation’ was still ongoing.The motive for the attack was not immediately clear.Aftonbladet newspaper reported that the attacker had been shot in the leg by police. It also cited unidentified sources as saying the attacker was an 18-year-old former student of the school.Images on public broadcaster SVT showed multiple ambulances and police cars parked outside the school as well as a police helicopter.The school has around 450 students, in a town of around 12,000 inhabitants.In May, the municipality announced that students at Brinellskolan had been sent home following a threat to the school.Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson told AFP in a written statement that ‘a serious incident has taken place today at a school in Fagersta, just after the summer holidays.”There are reports of people being injured. We do not yet know what lies behind the attack, but we do know that the police are working extremely intensively,’ Kristersson said.Magdalena Andersson, leader of the opposition Social Democrats, lamented the ‘terrible news’ from Fagersta, in a post on X.’My thoughts are with those affected and everyone involved,’ she said.’When violence takes place at a school, I know it impacts everyone in our country. All of Sweden stands with Fagersta in this difficult time.’Sweden has suffered some high-profile attacks at educational institutions.In February 2025, a 35-year-old man killed 10 people at an adult education centre in Orebro — Sweden's worst mass shooting.Police said it had been motivated by the killer's wish to end his life because of financial and psychological woes.In March 2022, an 18-year-old student stabbed two teachers to death at a secondary school in the southern city of Malmo.And in October 2015, three people were killed in a racially motivated attack at a school in the western town of Trollhattan by a sword-wielding assailant who was killed by police.  Source link

Ex-Pakistan PM Khan taken back to jail after hospital checks

Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan was transferred back to jail yesterday, authorities said, hours after the popular politician was taken to hospital for court-ordered medical checks.The Supreme Court ordered on Tuesday that Khan, 73, be taken to the private Shifa International Hospital in the capital Islamabad for treatment, after his lawyers filed a petition over health concerns.The ex-cricket captain and his wife Bushra Bibi, who is also his spiritual guide, were both sentenced late last year to 17 years in prison in a case Khan argues was politically motivated.Information Minister Attaullah Tarar wrote on X that Khan was taken to a public hospital instead of Shifa, blaming the “security situation” caused by supporters at the private clinic.”A team of qualified doctors, including an ophthalmologist, a cardiologist and a physician, conducted a detailed examination of him and declared him medically fit,” Tarar said.”After the completion of this entire process, he was transferred back to Adiala Jail.”Provincial MP Sohail Afridi, a senior leader in Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, criticised the handling of the hospital visit.The authorities “don’t even take the court seriously”, Afridi told a news conference in Islamabad.”This is against the whole judicial system,” he added, saying the party would “file a contempt of court case”.Hundreds of police, some wielding sticks, were deployed near Shifa late on Thursday, with roads leading to the hospital cordoned off ahead of the expected transfer.Dozens of supporters had waited outside the hospital.The court had warned against public gatherings on the hospital grounds or the use of information about Khan’s health for political gain, cautioning that any breaches could lead to the order being reversed.The next court hearing was set for September 16.The former prime minister received eye treatment at the same public hospital earlier this year, with his family and lawyer saying at the time that he had lost most of the vision in his right eye.Khan’s sister Uzma Khan, a medical doctor, was present during Friday’s examination.She told reporters at the same news conference Afridi spoke at that her brother “kept saying, ‘I am not OK. I have no books, no human contact'”.”Only his eye was checked, nothing else,” she added.”We are not satisfied with the treatment. The hypertension is due to the lack of human contact. Solitary confinement is torture, and Khan has been subjected to it for the past 10 months.”Khan’s personal physician, Faisal Sultan, whom the court said would be involved with the medical checks, told the news conference he had waited at Shifa hospital during the night before being told Khan would not be taken there.Haleem Adil Sheikh, a senior PTI leader, told AFP there was hope in the party that Khan “would receive better treatment” after the court order.But after changing the hospital and then moving Khan “back to jail, we’ve lost that hope as well”, he said.Khan was prime minister from 2018 to 2022 before being removed in a no-confidence vote during a political crisis over tensions between his government and the powerful military establishment.He has since faced multiple legal cases on corruption and other charges, which Khan and his PTI party maintain are politically motivated.His arrest triggered nationwide protests in May 2023, some of which turned violent and led to hundreds of arrests.  Source link
