Make it rain: Indonesia chases clouds to stem El Nino fires

 Indonesia’s Borneo, home to pristine rainforest and protected species, is burning. Meteorologist Safillah Anggie Wahyuni hopes a solution lies in the clouds.Indonesia believes cloud seeding can help it tackle a wildfire season that experts say is on track to be among the worst in years, driven by a strong El Nino.Indonesia’s government says over 100,000 hectares burned in the first half of the year.Independent analysis by deforestation monitoring site Nusantara Atlas puts the figure through July at over 285,000 hectares — more than four times the size of Jakarta.Cloud seeding, which involves sprinkling silver iodide, salts or other particles into clouds to trigger precipitation, is rarely used to tackle wildfires globally.But Indonesia is ramping up efforts, scarred by 2015 fires during a previous strong El Nino that burned through millions of hectares and created a regional haze crisis.”Weather modification does not create clouds: we optimise clouds that have the potential to produce rains,” Safillah told AFP after flying over Palangkaraya in Borneo’s Central Kalimantan.”Weather modification will only be effective if the conditions are right,” she added.Indonesia carried out 252 cloud-seeding operations between 2021 and August this year — up from 85 in the preceding decade, according to the BMKG weather agency.Most tried to draw rain away from flooded areas, but many sought to douse wildfires or wet flammable peatlands.In just three years since her first cloud-seeding operation, 25-year-old Safillah has accumulated more than 300 flight hours.The technique was first used in Indonesia in 1977 to top up a dam, and the government has said dozens of helicopters and fixed-wing planes are on standby for cloud seeding nationwide.”We are on alert to changes in weather, even the slightest, which could result in rain clouds,” Security Minister Djamari Chaniago said.But the bulk of the country’s firefighting is still done on the ground, with nearly 50,000 firefighters currently deployed.And experts question the technique’s use during the dry season, when wildfires peak.”Its effectiveness will be very low because of the lack of clouds,” said I Putu Santikayasa, a hydroclimatology lecturer at IPB University south of the capital Jakarta.Research suggests the efficacy of cloud seeding is hard to assess.It has also raised questions about harms linked to widespread use of silver iodide, as well as the cost.Cloud seeding is “a mitigation effort, not a permanent solution,” acknowledged BMKG weather modification director Budi Harsoyo, insisting there is no evidence of harms.Research he authored found a 12-day cloud-seeding operation in 2023 doubled likely rainfall and eliminated fire hotspots.Activists say mitigation efforts like cloud seeding ignore underlying problems, including mass conversion of rainforest and peatland.Indonesia has large swathes of tropical peatlands.They are an important carbon store when wet, but become highly flammable when dry and fires can smoulder underground and reignite quickly.These vulnerable ecosystems should be protected against development, said Uli Arta Siagian, campaign co-ordinator with local environmental group WALHI.”The responsibility for protection lies with the state by not issuing permits in areas that are vulnerable to fire,” she told AFP.Indonesia regularly battles devastating fires that send a choking haze over neighbours Malaysia and Singapore.In recent days, haze from the fires has spiked air pollution levels in the Malaysian part of Borneo island, prompting several school closures.In addition to cloud seeding, Indonesia is carrying out peatland rewetting and monitoring fire hotspots with satellites and ground patrols.Large-scale plantations are banned from using fire to clear land, though smallholders are exempt.But the practice remains common and is blamed for starting most of Indonesia’s wildfires.The environment minister has told local governments in vulnerable regions to beef up preventive patrols and encouraged “legal sanctions” including fines and “criminal penalties” for illegal burning.This year’s fires will be turbocharged by a powerful El Nino — a naturally occurring climate phenomenon that brings worldwide changes in winds, air pressure and rainfall patterns.It typically causes drier conditions in Indonesia and is associated with severe fires.The area of land burned in just the first half of this year already exceeds the area lost in all of 2023, when El Nino last formed.Activist group 350.org warned this week that climate change is exacerbating the trend.El Nino “arrived on top of higher global baseline temperatures, triggering more extreme weather.”  Source link

Israeli artillery shelling, airstrikes continue in Southern Lebanon

Israeli forces shelled several areas in southern Lebanon on Saturday, coinciding with airstrikes and bombings.According to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA), the town of Mansouri, the vicinity of Beit Siyad, and the outskirts of Majdal Zoun came under heavy artillery shelling at dawn today.Israeli forces also shelled the areas of Doha Kfar Rumman, the vicinity of Tell al-Dabsha, and Harj Ali al-Taher, using phosphorus shells.Meanwhile, warplanes launched two airstrikes this morning on the Ali al-Taher hill on the northern outskirts of Nabatieh al-Fawqa, while the Israeli army carried out a large bombing in the vicinity of Arnoun and the towns of Mansouri, Majdal Zoun, and Beit Siyad.The bombings also targeted the towns of Haddatha, Beit Yahoun, and Aita al-Jabal in southern Lebanon.These Israeli attacks were accompanied by continuous drone flights over the villages and towns of the western and central sectors. Iraqi President rejects use of Its territory for attacks on Gulf States

Iraqi President Nizar Amedi on Saturday reaffirmed Iraq’s rejection of any use of its territory as a launchpad for attacks against Gulf states, stressing the need to preserve the country’s stability and prevent it from becoming an arena for regional conflicts. Speaking during a discussion session at the eighth Baghdad Dialogue Conference, Amedi said Iraq was committed to protecting its sovereignty and preventing its territory from being used to harm neighboring countries. He reiterated Baghdad’s opposition to any attacks against Gulf states launched from Iraqi territory. Amedi said Iraq is at a sensitive regional juncture, requiring it to safeguard political and security stability and avoid the repercussions of an expanding regional conflict. Separately, Amedi said the international coalition’s mission in Iraq will end on September 30, at the request of the Iraqi government. He stressed that Baghdad remains committed to strengthening its security and sovereignty and preventing its territory from being used for hostile acts against countries in the region.    Source link

Egyptian Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty and Palestinian Prime Minister, Mohamed Mustafa discussed, in a telephone call today, the developments in the occupied Palestinian territories.The call addressed the developments in the Gaza Strip and the efforts made by Egypt, in coordination with mediators, to implement the US President Donald Trump peace roadmap, which include Israel’s withdrawal from the enclave; ensuring flow of humanitarian assistance; initiating early recovery and reconstruction efforts; the entry of the Palestinian National Authority’s committee to manage Gaza; and the deployment of an international stabilization force.The two sides also touched on the serious developments in the occupied West Bank, where the Egyptian Foreign Minister denounced the illegal settlement expansion and the escalating settler violence and attacks against Palestinians and their property. He warned against the dangers posed by the E1 settlement project, which threatens the geographical contiguity of the Palestinian territories and isolates East Jerusalem from its Palestinian surroundings.Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s categorical rejection to any attempts of annexing Palestinian territories; displacing Palestinians, or altering the legal and demographic status of the occupied territories, which would entrench the status quo and undermine the prospects for establishing a Palestinian state.  Source link

GCC Condemns Israel’s settlement expansion, calls for international action

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) on Saturday condemned Israel’s continued settlement plans in the occupied West Bank, including the E1 settlement project, warning that pursuing such plans constitutes a flagrant challenge to international law and a systematic undermining of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people. GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi stressed that such practices by Israeli occupation forces would undermine prospects for peace and threaten international and regional efforts to establish an independent Palestinian state. He called on the international community to take serious and responsible action to halt Israel’s settlement policies and plans and to oppose any measures aimed at altering the geographic and demographic character of the occupied Palestinian territories. Albudaiwi reaffirmed the GCC’s steadfast support for the Palestinian people’s right to establish an independent state within the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the Arab Peace Initiative and relevant international legitimacy resolutions.
