* Patrick Vieira opens Senegal tenure with away games against Mozambique and Ethiopia * Claude Le Roy returns to Congo for 12th national team appointment * Some 21 new coaches take charge as 48 countries compete in Cup of Nations qualifyingWorld Cup winner Patrick Vieira headlines a lengthy list of new coaches in charge of African national teams as the group qualifiers for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations finals kick off on Thursday.Vieira takes charge of Senegal, where he was born, as they look to recover from a disappointing World Cup where they were expected to pose Africa’s best challenge at the tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the United States but delivered an underwhelming performance that cost their former coach Pape Bouna Thiaw his job.A total of 21 new coaches will be in charge this week as 48 countries begin the group phase of the qualifiers. The list includes six of the 10 African countries who competed at the World Cup.Vieira was only a child when he and his mother left Dakar for France, whom he helped win the 1998 World Cup.”I have lots of flashes, such as the place where I used to play football with a tennis ball,” he said after returning to the country as an adult.However, there is no home debut for Vieira this month with Senegal playing Mozambique and Ethiopia away and then playing a friendly against the Comoros in Marseille.PAST CUP OF NATIONS WINNERS BACK IN COACHING ROLESWinning Cup of Nations coaches Aliou Cisse (Senegal 2021) and Herve Renard (Zambia 2012 and Ivory Coast 2015) have new jobs, with Cisse coaching Angola, who face Egypt in Cairo on Friday. Renard has an equally tough return to the role of Ivory Coast coach as they host neighbours Ghana.Renard was drafted in as an emergency to coach Tunisia at the World Cup, after Sabri Lamouchi was dismissed following a heavy defeat in their first game. The North Africans have since appointed Moin Chaabani, a former international defender, to revive their fortunes.Sebastien Migne is the new coach of Gabon, who begin their campaign away to Morocco on Friday. The Frenchman should know their opponents well, having coached Haiti when they twice led Morocco in a World Cup group game in Atlanta before losing 4-2.There is also a return for 78-year-old Claude Le Roy, as coach of Congo, who are away against Namibia on Thursday. Le Roy last coached Togo five years ago.It will be the veteran French coach’s 12th national team appointment and a second stint with the Congolese, where he was coach from 2013 to 2015.Le Roy holds the record for the most tournament appearances (9) and matches (38) coached at the Cup of Nations finals.   Related Story Source link

China prodigy wins third Games gold as North Korea weightlifters roar

North Korea weightlifter sets three world records for Asian Games gold

North Korea's Ri Song Gum gave her country their first gold of the Asian Games on Wednesday in style, setting three world records in the women's 49kg class in Nagoya. In the process she joined an elite club of just four weightlifters who have won three Asian Games gold medals. Ri hauled 94kg above her head in the opening snatch discipline, one kilogramme more than the previous world standard mark of 93kg.She then smashed the clean and jerk world mark of 115kg twice by hoisting 116kg and then 121kg. Her total of 215kg obliterated the old world mark by 7kg. India's Mirabai Chanu, the silver medallist at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, finally won an Asian Games medal at the third time of asking.She had a total of 198kg after a snatch of 87kg and clean and jerk of 111kg while Indonesia's Diana Tri Wijayana took bronze on 191kg, with 88kg and 103kg respectively.Ri became only the fourth lifter, and first woman, to win three Asian Games weightlifting golds. She joined Iran's Mohammad Nassiri (1966-74), South Korea's Kim Tae-hyun (1990-98) and Iran's Behdad Salimi (2010-2018) who all won three golds. No one has ever won four.  Source link

World Cup ‘not enough’ as Spain begin next chapter

League of Arab States, Global Carbon Council to jointly host Arab Climate Pavilion at COP31

‘Never a friendly game’ for Brazil, says Ancelotti ahead of India match

China’s Xi heads to US for talks with Trump: state media

China’s leader Xi Jinping departed Beijing on Wednesday, bound for Washington where he will meet with US President Donald Trump, state media said. The highly anticipated talks come as the two countries confront rising fears about increasingly capable artificial intelligence systems, and as both sides look to ease tensions on trade.Xi “left Beijing by special plane”, accompanied by his wife Peng Liyuan, his right-hand man Cai Qi, and foreign minister Wang Yi, among others, state broadcaster CCTV said. Trump is due to personally meet Xi on his arrival at Joint Base Andrews, before their meetings on Thursday, according to the White House. The US leader was greeted by China’s vice president when he landed in Beijing for his state visit in May. Xi and Peng will attend a ceremony at the White House on Thursday morning, which will include a military flyover.The two leaders are due to hold talks and Trump is set to host Xi for a state dinner at the White House in the evening. The visit will wrap up on Friday morning where the two presidential couples will have tea at the White House then visit the National Archives to round out the trip.The White House said that the visit marks “a significant milestone in the relationship between the two countries.” But the meeting between the two leaders could touch on multiple points of tension, with Trump telling reporters that he will be “discussing almost everything” with Xi.Trump’s Iran war casts a long shadow, as China seeks to avoid US sanctions against countries dealing with Tehran — despite reports that Beijing supplied Tehran with intelligence for a strike on US troops. A trade war is of even greater concern and the world’s two largest economies are still seeking to mitigate the fallout from Trump’s global tariffs.The threat of war over the island of Taiwan — which China claims as its territory — looms large as well. – Leverage -Analysts, however, have tempered expectations by cautioning there might not be many concrete deals announced.Preliminary talks between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and his Chinese counterpart He Lifeng discussed creating a communication channel for AI concerns, but released little in the way of detail.Bessant said at the time that the two sides discussed setting up a way to communicate about AI issues called the “US-China AI dialogue.” “The US has proposed that we have a notification mechanism between the two countries,” Bessent said.The son of jailed Hong Kong pro-democracy media mogul Jimmy Lai made an appeal to Xi from Washington that his 78-year-old father be released. Trump said in May, however, that he had discussed Lai’s fate with Xi and his release was unlikely. But Beijing did release the founder of an underground church, Ezra Jin, after Trump raised his case with Xi. China’s negotiating arsenal includes its dominance in the supply of rare earths, critical materials used for high-tech products that are vital to US manufacturers.Beijing successfully pressured Washington to back down from its sky-high tariffs last year after imposing stringent controls on exports of rare earths.
