 Swiss prosecutors said yesterday that they had ordered one of the two owners of a ski resort club where a fire on New Year’s Day killed 40 people to be detained due to flight risk, with local media saying that the order had been carried out.Prosecutors are investigating the French owners on suspicion of crimes including homicide by negligence, while victims’ families have filed legal complaints over the fire at “Le Constellation” in Crans-Montana in the Canton of Valais.Shortly after Swiss newspaper *24 Heures reported that one of the couple, Jacques Moretti, has been remanded in custody, prosecutors said they had issued an order for him to be held.The Valais police declined to comment.Earlier, Jacques and Jessica Moretti did not respond to reporters’ questions as they entered the prosecutors’ office in the town of Sion for a hearing.Swiss authorities have designated yesterday as a national day of mourning.The couple have expressed their grief over the fire and said they would co-operate fully with the investigation.More than half of those who died were teenagers and a further 116 people were injured, many of them seriously.Several French and Italian citizens were among the dead, and Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called for stern punishment to be meted out to those responsible for the blaze.Italian President Sergio Mattarella and French President Emmanuel Macron joined Swiss leaders, victims’ families and firefighters at a ceremony yesterday in the town of Martigny, where a minute’s silence was held to remember the victims.Dozens of people also stood near the shuttered club in nearby Crans-Montana in silence, heads bowed under heavy snowfall.Authorities placed hundreds of letters, teddy bears and bouquets of flowers for the fire victims beneath an igloo to protect them from snowfall.Speaking at the Martigny ceremony, Swiss President Guy Parmelin said he hoped that those responsible for the fire would be brought to account “without delay or leniency”.That must also include relevant political authorities, said Mathias Reynard, head of the Valais government.Speaking in Rome yesterday, Meloni pledged to help the families of the Italian victims find justice, and said she was weighing a ban in Italy on the use of sparklers indoors.”What happened in Crans-Montana is the result of too many people not doing their job or thinking they were making easy money,” she said. “Those responsible must be identified and prosecuted.”Witnesses and prosecutors have said the blaze appeared to have been started by the use of sparkling candles that set foam soundproofing on the basement ceiling alight.Questions remain about oversight at the club, which the local mayor admitted this week had missed multiple safety checks.Prosecutors said last weekend that the legal criteria to detain the club’s owners had so far not been met.In a January 6 statement, the owners said: “We are devastated and overcome with grief, our thoughts are constantly with the victims, their loved ones who have been bereaved so brutally and prematurely, and all those who are fighting for their lives.”Twenty-one of the dead were from Switzerland, seven from France, and six from Italy.A Swiss-French dual national and a French-British-Israeli national were also among the dead.Nicolas Dobler, a 38-year-old volunteer fireman in the northwestern Swiss canton of Jura, said he had come with three colleagues to light candles at the memorial at Crans-Montana.”We came specifically today for the national day of mourning and also to really support our fellow firefighters who have truly experienced something horrible,” he told AFP. “It’s a situation you would never want to encounter. You can’t prepare for this kind of thing, it’s impossible. Even with all the training in the world.”Olena, a 61-year-old Ukrainian refugee living in the nearby city of Sion below, said she had also come up the mountainside to take part in the day of mourning.”I come from Ukraine, where people are also dying,” she said. “This was terrifying. I wanted to come and honour the victims.”Outside Le Constellation, Federico Gelle, a 17-year-old from Italy’s Tuscany region, lit a candle for so many teens his own age who had perished.He knelt down and seemed to pray among the flowers, before straightening his glasses and re-emerging, his eyes filled with tears.”This is a terrible thing, but it was avoidable,” he told AFP. “I haven’t lost anyone here… but it is just very sad.”Gelle said that if he had chosen to spend New Year’s Eve in Crans-Montana, as he had in the past, he might very well have been among the victims.”It’s a thought that sent shivers down my spine… I think I am very lucky.”Matthias Gerhardt, 61, had meanwhile made the trip from Geneva, visiting Crans-Montana for the first time.”What happened is so serious, it’s unbelievable. That’s why I came all this way,” he told AFP.”We are in a state of national mourning. It is important that we can express our anger, speak with people,” he said. Germany today called on Israel to reverse its decision to expand settlements in the West Bank, including the E1 project, warning that such steps undermine the chances of a two-state solution and increase the risk of instability.  Germany’s Federal Foreign Office stated in a press release that there has been a recent and comprehensive intensification of Israeli settlement activity in the West Bank, adding that the E1 settlement project is part of this expansion. The Office stressed that proceeding with these plans risks increasing instability in the West Bank and the wider region.  On December 24, the German Federal Foreign Office issued an official statement reiterating its rejection of settlement expansion, specifically mentioning the E1 project as a violation of international law that threatens the prospects for peace. It called on Israel to reverse its settlement expansion decisions in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2334.  Source link

 Director of the Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip Brigadier General Raed Al Dahshan said that the continued ban on the entry of heavy machinery and equipment is preventing the recovery of approximately 10,000 bodies still buried under the rubble. In a press statement on Friday, he confirmed that the Civil Defense has only managed to recover about 350 bodies so far, while thousands remain trapped beneath the debris. He emphasized that most of the bodies are known to their families, and that what is often recovered are merely skeletal remains due to the passage of time and the difficulty of rapid access.  He noted that the Civil Defense had lost about 85 percent of its equipment, and is now operating at only 5 to 7 percent of its pre-war capacity, resulting in a near-complete paralysis of the agency’s operational capabilities.  He said that the crews were working with extremely rudimentary resources, often with their bare hands, adding that only one fire truck, one rescue vehicle, and one ambulance remain operational.  He revealed that the Civil Defense Service lost 142 martyrs from its staff while performing their humanitarian duty, and that 352 crew members were seriously injured, which permanently removed them from service, including amputations, permanent disabilities, and severe injuries. Hardeep Singh Brar, president and CEO, BMW Group India, poses beside a Mini convertible at a BMW showroom in Mumbai, India.  As part of a strategic push to grow its presence in India’s emerging luxury market, BMW has announced plans to launch 10 new models and 17 product upgrades this yearIn 2025, the automaker achieved record-breaking sales of 18,001 vehicles in India, a 14% increase that narrowed the gap with market leader Mercedes-Benz. Despite this growth, premium models continue to represent just 1% of India’s total annual car market, which exceeds 4.3mn units.BMW Group India chief executive Hardeep Brar said the automaker plans to tackle this limited market penetration by launching more models while cutting manufacturing costs through increased local sourcing. BMW sources roughly half of its components locally (including seats, engines, axles and tyres) for Indian-made vehicles. Brar is working to raise this proportion, although he has thus far declined to offer specific targets.So far, the strategy appears to be working — at least as far as electric vehicles (EVs) are concerned. Local assembly of the iX1 model, which launched in 2025, allowed competitive pricing against internal combustion engine-powered equivalents and fuelled 200% sales growth.Now, EVs account for more than a fifth of BMW’s Indian deliveries — up from 8% in 2024 — prompting the automaker to evaluate sourcing electric motors locally to further reduce production costs. Brar acknowledged these discussions remain at early stages.Brar is also urging the government to maintain the current 5% tax rate on EVs, which compares favourably against the 40% and above for internal combustion engine vehicles.While EV market penetration remains quite low in India, he argues that premium buyers are driving the momentum. “Overall EV penetration in India is about 4% but for luxury it is 10%. Hence we need this long term strategy from the government, wherein the lower tax is maintained for a certain period of time till EVs can sustain on their own.”More than one-third of BMW’s planned 2026 launches will arrive under the Mini brand as the automaker pursues growth momentum across multiple segments. The company delivered 17,271 BMW and 730 Mini vehicles in 2025, with long-wheelbase models proving particularly popular among Indian consumers, contributing 50% of sales.  Source link

 The Syro Malabar Cultural Association (SMCA) organised a blood donation camp recently at their premises with the participation of a large number of donors. The organisation also arranged a free medical camp in association with American Hospital Doha where people were tested for various lifestyle diseases and other ailments.   Organisers said that it was the first such drive of the association in 2026 and it will be followed by more such initiatives in the coming months.  Source link

Morocco coach Walid Regragui sought to remove some of the pressure on his team as he suggested Cameroon had more to lose in the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final between the sides.The tournament hosts are the favourites to win the competition given their home advantage as well as the fact they are Africa’s leading side in the FIFA world rankings. But the expectation on them brings an enormous weight of pressure that is in contrast to Cameroon, who have reached the last eight despite a chaotic build-up to the Cup of Nations which saw them appoint a new coach weeks before their opening game.There is also a historical precedent: the last time Morocco hosted the Cup of Nations was in 1988, when their dream of winning the title was ended in defeat by Roger Milla’s Indomitable Lions in the semi-finals in Casablanca.“The reality is that Cameroon have generally been Morocco’s bete noire. They have often come here and won. But that was in the past. We are the new Morocco so what happened then no longer matters,” Regragui said on the eve of today’s clash.He then suggested that Cameroon’s failure to qualify for the upcoming World Cup means they have more to lose than a Moroccan team desperate to win the continental title in front of their fans, half a century after their sole Cup of Nations triumph to date.“The reality now is that Cameroon are on form, and this is their competition because they have everything to lose,” Regragui insisted.“If they go no further they will have to wait two or three more years for another major tournament. We also have something to lose because we are at home but in four months we have the World Cup so we have another competition to play. That is why Cameroon will be motivated, more than usual. There is pressure on us but on them too.”The Morocco coach was also full of praise for his Cameroonian counterpart David Pagou, whose calm demeanour has helped a young side progress from their group and then eliminate South Africa in the last 16.“We are playing the host nation, a top side who have really good individuals as well as a collective that works well together,” admitted Pagou.“And also, not that I am a historian but Morocco have not lost at home in a very long time. So that is an extra source of motivation.”For Morocco, the Lille striker Hamza Igamane is fit again after injury but Regragui acknowledged that midfield lynchpin Sofyan Amrabat is still struggling with an ankle problem while veteran defender Romain Saiss is also not fully fit.However, captain Achraf Hakimi is set to start again after doing so for the first time in the tournament in the narrow last 16 win against Tanzania.“Achraf hadn’t played 90 minutes in almost two months. He played very well against Tanzania but we have not yet seen Achraf at his best. Hopefully we will tomorrow,” Regragui said of the African player of the year, who suffered an ankle injury with Paris Saint-Germain in early November.  Related Story Source link

Harry Brook has apologised for an altercation in New Zealand during the team’s white-ball tour late last year after a report ‌Thursday said the England batsman was ‌struck by a ‍nightclub bouncer after being denied entry to the venue. The Daily Telegraph report said the incident occurred on October 31, the night before England’s ‍third one-day international against the hosts. England went on to lose the match, ensuring a 3-0 series sweep for New Zealand, with white-ball captain Brook scoring just six runs in the ODI. The news is the latest setback for England’s board (ECB), ‌which is dealing with the fallout from a 4-1 Ashes series defeat in Australia and is looking into reports ‍that players drank excessively during a ‌break between Tests. “I want to apologise for my actions,” said Brook, who was the third-highest scorer during the Ashes series with 358 runs, in statement to British media. “I fully accept that my behaviour was wrong and brought embarrassment to both myself and the England team. “I am determined to learn from this mistake and to rebuild trust through my future actions, both ​on and off ‌the field. I apologise unreservedly and will work hard to ensure this does not happen ‍again.” The ECB said it was aware of the incident and that it had been dealt with through a formal and confidential disciplinary process. “The player involved has apologised and acknowledged their conduct fell below expectations on ​this occasion,” it added in a statement. ECB CEO Richard Gould said the governing body had already begun a “thorough review” of their Ashes campaign, which ended Thursday with defeat in the fifth Test in Sydney. “This will cover tour planning and preparation, individual performance and behaviours, and our ability to adapt and respond effectively as circumstances require,” he added.  Source link
