Qatar Fintech Hub concludes ‘QFTH Demo Day 2025’ 7th wave

This year’s edition, the largest in terms of participating companies, featured presentations from 20 startups enrolled in the ‘pre-acceleration and acceleration programmes. Qatar Fintech Hub (QFTH), supported by Qatar Development Bank (QDB), has concluded the seventh wave of ‘Demo Day’ of fintech companies graduating from its pre-acceleration and acceleration programmes.The event was attended by representatives from regulators, business ecosystem partners, and a select group of investors, financial sector leaders, and entrepreneurs. QDB, represented by QFTH, made a strategic announcement regarding the ‘Fintech Development Grant’ provided by the Qatar Central Bank (QCB), and the launch of the new model of the ‘Pre-seed Investment Programme’.The event, held under the title ‘Fintech Transformed: From Vision to Impact’, reaffirmed the continued progress of Qatar’s financial ecosystem. This year’s edition, the largest in terms of participating companies, featured presentations from 20 startups enrolled in the ‘pre-acceleration and acceleration programmes.These startups had undergone weeks of thorough hands-on training and specialised mentorship, covering technical and organisational product development, navigating legal and regulatory procedures, preparing for investment, and entering and competing in the market.The seventh wave of companies demonstrated significant maturity and diverse expertise, spanning strategic areas that contribute to the future development of Qatar’s financial sector. These areas include Open Banking, Crowdfunding, InsurTech, and Emerging Tech, in alignment with the objectives of Qatar’s National FinTech Strategy and the Third Financial Sector Strategic Plan.The ‘Fintech Development Grant’, provided by the QCB through QFTH, will offer co-funding of up to QR1.5mn per company, linked to key milestones in each company’s growth journey. The grant aims to enhance technical and regulatory readiness, support product development, and facilitate market entry.QDB also presented the updated model of the ‘Pre-seed Investment Programme’ to finance early-stage companies and graduates of QFTH programmes, announcing an increase in direct investment funding to QR730,000 ($200,000) per company. This comes in addition to other high-quality support services and packages provided by the hub, most notably the opportunity to apply to the ‘Talent Community Programme’, which is designed to attract specialised talent to work in Qatar by offering premium residential spaces.The event also witnessed the announcement of the redesign of the QFTH’s operating methodology through the introduction of an applied model known as the ‘Lab Model’. This model provides a practical pathway for product development and regulatory readiness, enabling companies to transition to the testing environment (sandbox) and initiate the licensing process quickly and effectively. The hub will also hold discussion sessions with companies to better understand their needs and work to address them through an integrated support ecosystem.The success of the latest wave marks a continuation of QDB’s journey in supporting innovation in the fintech sector. Through QFTH, QDB has successfully graduated seven waves of fintech companies so far, in addition to the support it has provided through investments and financing exceeding QR73mn within the sector, whether through the QFTH or QDB’s investment arm.This reflects QDB’s pivotal role in strengthening Qatar’s position as a regional centre for fintech, based on strategic partnerships with regulators and financial and technical institutions. The momentum was further reinforced by recent achievements during QDB’s participation in the Singapore FinTech Festival, which resulted in the signing of a strategic agreement with the Global Finance & Technology Network (GFTN) to establish a fintech centre of excellence and support in Qatar, the first-of-its-kind in the region, as well as to host an international fintech forum in Qatar in the future. It represents a significant addition to the supportive ecosystem and advanced infrastructure provided by Qatar.  Related Story Source…

Jordan’s king, crown prince thank Qatar for excellent organisation of FIFA Arab Cup

 King Abdullah II bin al-Hussein of Jordan and his Crown Prince, Al-Hussein bin Abdullah II, expressed their gratitude to Qatar for its excellent organisation of the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 and its associated events. In a post on ‘X’ platform, the Jordanian monarch thanked Doha for bringing together all Arab brethren, and extended congratulations to Morocco on winning the title.  For his part the crown prince wrote on his Instagram account, “Gratitude to the all the loyal fans for their presence and support of the Nashama.  We congratulate our brothers in Morocco on winning the championship, and we extend our sincere appreciation to Qatar for the excellent organisation.” Morocco were crowned champions of the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 on Thursday evening, defeating their Jordanian counterparts 3-2 after extra time.  Source link

Flights cancelled, roads flooded as rare storm soaks UAE

 UAE airport authorities cancelled or delayed dozens of flights and roads were flooded in major cities as the heaviest rainstorm in months lashed the desert nation yesterday.Dubai’s Emirates airline axed 13 flights yesterday and there were also delays and cancellations at neighbouring Sharjah’s airport after the overnight downpour, which woke residents with lightning flashes and loud cracks of thunder. Sharjah’s main street was completely flooded early yesterday, with residents seen wading through it in bare feet. One man rode his bicycle through the water, which reached the top of its wheels. The scenes evoked memories of April 2024, when record rains caused widespread flooding and forced the cancellation of more than 2,000 flights at Dubai’s major international air hub. On Thursday, Dubai police had urged residents to stay in unless “absolutely necessary” as the rainstorm approached. Early yesterday, water-pumping trucks were seen around Dubai clearing blocked roads and large puddles in the streets.The Dubai Airports website showed dozens of flights had been delayed yesterday, and some cancelled. “Some flights… are cancelled or delayed due to adverse weather,” a Dubai Airports spokesperson said.The National Center of Meteorology had warned of rainfall across the country from Thursday to yesterday, including in Dubai and the capital Abu Dhabi.  Other Gulf states also experienced heavy rain, including Qatar where the Arab Cup football’s third-place play-off between Saudi Arabia and UAE was cancelled on Thursday. Last year’s downpours in the UAE, the heaviest since records began 76 years ago, killed at least four people and brought Dubai to a standstill for days.A study published by the World Weather Attribution group found that global warming caused by fossil fuel emissions “most likely” exacerbated the intense rains that lashed the UAE and Oman last year.  Source link

Grand Qatar National Day festivities at IIS

Hamas says Miami talks must end Israel ‘violations’

 A top Hamas official said yesterday talks in Miami to advance the next phase of the Gaza ceasefire must aim to end Israeli truce “violations”, as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged the group’s disarmament.US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is to meet officials from Qatar, Egypt and Turkiye in Florida, hoping to salvage efforts to reach the second stage of the deal. “Our people expect these talks to result in an agreement to put an end to ongoing Israeli lawlessness, halt all violations and compel the occupation to abide by the Sharm El-Sheikh agreement,” Hamas political bureau member Bassem Naim told AFP. aDuring the second stage, Israel is supposed to withdraw from its positions in Gaza, an interim authority is to govern the Palestinian territory instead of Hamas, and an international stabilisation force is to be deployed.Hamas’ Gaza chief Khalil al-Hayya said on Sunday the group had a “legitimate right” to hold weapons. Israel has repeatedly insisted that Hamas will be disarmed. Rubio also said yesterday he was confident that countries would send troops for the planned international stabilisation force. “I feel very confident that we have a number of nation states acceptable to all sides in this who are willing to step forward and be a part of that stabilisation force,” he said.  Source link

Sellami proud of Jordan players despite loss

(AFP)  Jordan coach Jamal Sellami expressed pride in his players’ performance despite a narrow 3-2 extra-time defeat to Morocco in the final of the FIFA Arab Cup at Lusail Stadium on Thursday. Speaking at the post-match press conference, Sellami said the final lived up to expectations, praising the high technical level shown by both teams after the match finished 2–2 at the end of regular time. Despite conceding early, Sellami highlighted Jordan’s strong response in the second half, during which Ali Olwan scored twice – a header and a penalty in the 48th and 68th minutes – to put his side ahead. “The players gave everything and even exceeded expectations,” Sellami said. “We were very close to winning the title.”  He commended the fighting spirit, discipline, and collective effort of his squad but acknowledged that Morocco’s experience ultimately made the difference.Morocco had taken the lead in the fourth minute through an audacious long-range strike from Oussama Tannane, whose shot from the centre circle caught advancing goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila off guard. Abderrazzaq Hamed Allah later proved decisive, scoring three minutes from the end of regulation time to force extra time before netting the winner from close range. Sellami admitted there was regret over losing the title but stressed that Jordan’s long-term project remains on track, with the focus now turning to preparations for the 2026 World Cup, where Jordan are set to make their debut. “This generation has shown strong character,” he said. “The opportunity will be there for them to compete for titles in the future.” He also emphasised the importance of developing Jordan’s domestic league to help nurture young talent capable of representing the national team at the highest level.For Morocco, the Arab Cup triumph added to a growing list of achievements, despite the absence of several Europe-based players ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations.The Atlas Lions continue to build on their historic run to the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar three years ago and recent successes across their youth teams, underlining the depth and strength of Moroccan football.  Source link
