India’s economic growth accelerated to 8.2% year-on-year in the July-September period, boosted by strong consumer spending and a front-loading of production ahead of local festivals and punitive U.S. tariffs. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast a 7.3% expansion for the quarter ended September, during which the U.S. imposed an additional 25% punitive tariff on Indian exports, raising the total levy to 50%. The gross domestic product grew by 7.8% in the previous quarter. Private consumer spending, which accounts for around 57% of GDP, rose 7.9% year-on-year in July-September, compared with a 7% rise a quarter ago, the data released on Friday showed. To counter subdued external demand and mitigate the effects of U.S. tariffs tied to its Russian oil purchases, India introduced tax cuts on mass consumption items which kicked in at the end of September.”The blockbuster GDP growth has been led by front-loading of exports,” said Garima Kapoor, economist, institutional equities, at Elara Securities in Mumbai.”With today’s print, full-year FY26 GDP growth will now see an upside and will be close to 7.5%, way above the (central bank’s) and government’s estimate,” Kapoor said.GOVERNMENT EXPECTS SUSTAINED GROWTH Economists said stockpiling for the festive season as well as expedited exports ahead of the 50% tariff deadline on August 27 might have contributed to the quarterly growth figures.Manufacturing output rose 9.1% in the quarter ending in September from a year earlier against growth of 7.7% a quarter ago, while construction expanded 7.2% year-on-year from 7.6% a quarter ago. Government spending decelerated, declining 2.7% year-on-year in the three-month period compared with growth of 7.4% in the previous quarter. The government expects strong demand, firm public spending and easing inflation to help India weather trade uncertainties and sustain growth through the rest of the 2025/26 financial year. Retail inflation in October slumped to a record low of 0.25% in October, raising chances of an interest rate cut by the Reserve Bank of India in its next review in December.Nominal growth, which includes inflation, was 8.7% in July-September as against 8.8% in the quarter earlier, weighing on corporate profits and tax collection.MORE RATE CUTS POSSIBLEGross value added, considered by economists as a more accurate measure of underlying economic activity, grew 8.1% year-on-year in July-September from 7.6% in the three months to June. GVA excludes indirect taxes and government subsidy payouts, which tend to be volatile. The agriculture sector grew 3.5% year-on-year compared with an increase of 3.7% a quarter ago.Domestic tax cuts and the RBI’s cumulative rate cuts of 100 basis points this year will help boost private investment and economic growth, according to the central bank. The central bank estimates the economy will grow 6.8% in the financial year ending March.Earlier this week, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said there was scope to further reduce interest rates, ahead of the monetary policy meeting scheduled in December. At least 11 people, including women and children, were killed and several others were injured in an Israeli attack that targeted the town of Beit Jinn in the Damascus countryside at dawn on Friday. The Syrian News Channel reported that a number of dead and wounded remain trapped under the rubble, noting that Israeli warplanes continued to fly over the road connecting the town of Beit Jinn with the Beit Jinn farm. For its part, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) said that Israeli occupation forces shelled Beit Jinn with artillery at 3:40 a.m., while a military unit entered the town, arrested three people, and later withdrew.SANA added that residents confronted the incursion force, which opened heavy fire, leading to violent clashes between the Israeli troops and local residents. At the same time, Israeli aircraft carried out intensive aerial patrols over the area, while warplanes dropped incendiary balloons following the clashes. The agency further reported that the town is witnessing a wave of displacement, with residents fleeing to nearby areas for safety. This escalation comes amid continued Israeli violations in southern Syria, in breach of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement and relevant UN Security Council resolutions. FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025: Qatar National Team enters tournament with high hopes for historic title
The Qatar national football team is set to compete in the 11th edition of the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025, which kicks off next Monday in Doha, with strong ambitions to claim their first-ever title.Qatar will open its campaign against Palestine in early December at Al Bayt Stadium, in Group A, which also includes Tunisia and Syria. The team aims for a strong start to pave the way for a deep run in the tournament.Despite participating in three previous editions, Qatar has never won the Arab Cup. Their best result came in 1998 when they finished as runners-up on home soil. They secured third place in the 2021 edition, also held in Doha, and finished fourth in their debut appearance in 1985 in Saudi Arabia. The team is banking on key advantages, notably home support and familiar conditions, which are expected to provide a significant morale boost in what promises to be a fiercely contested tournament, given the high level of preparedness and ambition among Arab teams.Qatari fans have long played a pivotal role in the national team’s recent successes, most notably during the 2023 AFC Asian Cup in Doha. The passionate home crowd was instrumental in motivating the players through challenging knockout rounds, including a penalty shootout win over Uzbekistan in the quarterfinals, a 3-2 victory against Iran in the semifinals, and a triumphant 3-1 win over Jordan in the final to retain the continental title.Qatar enters the Arab Cup on a high note, having recently secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the US, Mexico, and Canada. They topped Group A in the fourth round of qualifiers held in Doha, following a goalless draw with Oman and a 2-1 win over the UAE.The team’s current roster is a blend of seasoned veterans and emerging talents. Leading the charge is star forward Akram Afif, who played a decisive role in the 2023 Asian Cup, contributing to 11 of Qatar’s 14 goals, scoring eight and assisting three, earning both the tournament’s Golden Boot and Best Player awards. He also assisted both goals in the crucial World Cup qualifying win over the UAE.Other key players include Assim Madibo and Abdelaziz Hatem, both instrumental in Qatar’s 2019 and 2023 Asian Cup victories, along with Ahmed Fathi, Tarek Salman, Jassem Gaber, and standout goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham.Head coach Julen Lopetegui has opted to inject fresh energy into the squad by calling up several young players who have impressed in the domestic league this season, such as Khaled Ali Bin Sabaa, Ayoub Al Alawi, Al Hashimi Al Hussain, and Mohammed Khaled. This aligns with his vision of rejuvenating the team in preparation for the 2026 World Cup, while still relying on experienced figures like Ahmed Fathi, Marquez Lopez, Mohammed Muntari, and Edmilson Junior. The Qatar national football team’s squad for the upcoming FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 features several notable absences, most prominently all-time top scorer Almoez Ali, who recently underwent surgery for an injury sustained early in the season. The injury has sidelined him from both club duties with Al Duhail and national team appearances. Additionally, Ahmed Al Rawi and Ahmed Al Janahi will also miss the tournament due to injuries. As part of the renewal strategy led by Spanish head coach Julen Lopetegui, several veteran players who have featured prominently in recent years, such as Boualem Khoukhi, Pedro Miguel, and Karim Boudiaf, were not called up. However, the door remains open for their return if needed in the future.Lopetegui’s leadership has been pivotal in stabilizing the team after a disappointing third round in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.Under his guidance, Qatar secured qualification through the playoff stage, reigniting the form of many key players. This resurgence has fueled optimism that the team will continue its upward trajectory during the Arab Cup, building momentum ahead of the World Cup.Qatar faces a challenging path in the Arab Cup, with several high-caliber Arab teams in contention. Six nations, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Tunisia, Egypt, Algeria, and Morocco, have already qualified for the World Cup, with three expected to field their first-choice squads.Other strong contenders include Iraq, currently in the intercontinental playoff, and teams like Oman, Kuwait, the UAE, and Palestine, who performed admirably in qualifiers despite not securing a World Cup berth. To reach the podium, Qatar will need to be at its technical peak.Former national team player Meshal Abdullah told Qatar News Agency (QNA) that Qatar is among the top contenders for the 2025 Arab Cup title, citing their strong performances in the Asian playoff matches against Oman and the UAE.He noted that the team has regained its form after a period of inconsistency during the third round of qualifiers.Abdullah praised Lopetegui’s impact since taking charge in May, particularly his decision to introduce new faces who have strengthened key positions and improved overall performance. He highlighted the team’s balanced approach between defense and attack, a significant improvement from earlier stages when Qatar conceded heavily. This balance, he said, positions the team well for a strong showing in the Arab Cup, which also serves as a vital preparatory stage for the 2026 World Cup.Former national team player Raed Yaqoub echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of the Arab Cup as a stepping stone toward the World Cup.He stressed, however, that this does not diminish the team’s ambition to win its first Arab title, especially given the recent successes of a golden generation that secured back-to-back AFC Asian Cup titles in 2019 and 2023, and qualified for the 2026 World Cup through the qualifiers for the first time, having previously entered the 2022 edition as hosts.Yaqoub pointed to the team’s improved form during the fourth round of Asian qualifiers as a strong indicator of their potential to win the Arab Cup.He praised the current squad selection as the best available, despite the absence of key players like Almoez Ali, Ahmed Al Janahi, and Ahmed Al Rawi, expressing confidence in the team’s ability to make a strong impact, especially with the anticipated enthusiastic support from home fans. Britain said Friday it was “disappointing” talks with Brussels to access a 150-billion-euro ($174 billion) EU scheme to bolster Europe’s defences had failed amid disagreement over the entry fee.European nations have scrambled to bolster their militaries since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, with Brussels launching its loan initiative earlier this year. The SAFE (Security Action for Europe) scheme will provide EU countries with 150 billion euros of loans at lower rates to help them rearm.London and Brussels had been wrangling over the level of contribution the UK would make to join the scheme, which would have allowed Britain to secure more lucrative access for its arms manufacturers.EU relations minister Nick Thomas-Symonds said in a statement it was “disappointing that we have not been able to conclude discussions on UK participation in the first round of SAFE”.But he noted the UK defence industry “will still be able to participate in projects through SAFE on third-country terms”.”Our position was always clear: we will only sign agreements that are in the national interest and provide value for money,” Thomas-Symonds added.EU countries are obliged to spend the loaned money on weapons that are at least 65 percent produced in the bloc.If Britain had joined, that figure would have been reduced for London — meaning British firms could try to cash in more. Both sides said the negotiations had been conducted in “good faith”, with the European Commission also stressing that Britain can still participate in up to 35 percent of SAFE procurements. It added that talks with Canada about its participation continue “and we hope to find an agreement before Sunday”.EU officials previously said the bloc had asked London to contribute up to 6.5 billion euros to join the SAFE scheme. But Britain — which left the EU in 2020 following its Brexit split — baulked at that price tag and had pushed for a better deal, according to diplomatic sources.Poland, Romania, France and Hungary were among the biggest claimants for money under SAFE, when Brussels unveiled its funding allocations in September.Poland snapped up loans worth almost 44 billion euros, followed by Romania on 16.7 billion, and France and Hungary on 16.2 billion each, according to preliminary figures. Australia’s Travis Head celebrates after reaching his century against England at Optus Stadium in Perth. (AFP) Australia’s Ashes match-winner Travis Head said he was wary of inciting England’s fast bowlers as he slogged his way to a stunning century in the first test in Perth. Head’s brilliant 83-ball 123 as a makeshift opener in the second innings helped Australia seal an eight-wicket win in two days and give the hosts a 1-0 lead. He told Australian radio station Triple M Thursday that he feared he might make the English bowlers angry with him too early in the five-Test series. “I’m also very realistic as well that they had two blokes bowling 150 clicks,” Head said. “I accidentally hit Jofra (Archer) back over his head for six at one point and calmly walked back and marked centre and was like, ‘Oh my god, why did I just do that?’” Head said he had to calm batting partner Marnus Labuschagne who got too excited with his shot-making. “Marnus came down and (he) was like, ‘I know you’re trying to act cool, but that’s unbelievable’. And he’s yelling and screaming, and he’s hoo-hah-ing. “And I’m like, ‘Mate, get back to the other end, at any moment they can put a hole through me, they bowl 150 clicks’.” Head said he was touched to get a congratulatory text message from former Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist who scored the fastest Ashes century with a 57-ball century at the WACA in 2006.Head reached his hundred in 69 balls, the second fastest. “He messaged me and said, ‘Well done.’ He was very proud,” said Head. “I messaged him back and said, ‘How the hell did you do it quicker? In 50-odd balls?’. “He said he got a very tight attack on a very hot day in Perth.” England’s light preparations for the series have drawn criticism, as has their decision to not send any of their Perth 11 for practice in a two-day pink ball match against the Prime Minister’s XI side in Canberra. The second Test at the Gabba, which starts December 4, will be a day-night Test with the pink ball. Head said he could see why England had chosen not to bother with the Canberra match. “You can either … change the script and say, ‘We’re going to train’, or you can double down and go, ‘Nup, we’ve had this planned out, we know exactly how we want to go for five tests’,” he said. “You’ve got to respect the fact they’ve been a bloody good team, and I reckon they’ve got their plans … and they’re doubling down. “Credit to them, they’re going to live by the sword or die by the sword, and we’ll see where we’re at in Brisbane.” Related Story Source link
