IWF Chief hails Qatar’s excellence in hosting top tier weightlifting events

President of the International Weightlifting Federation, Mohammed Hassan Jalood President of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), Mohammed Hassan Jalood, has lauded Qatar for its exceptional contribution to the growth and promotion of weightlifting at the international, continental and Arab levels. Jalood praised the Qatar Weightlifting Federation and its president, Mohammed Yousef al-Mana, for their continuous efforts to advance the sport locally, regionally and globally.He highlighted the outstanding organisation of the 10th Qatar International Cup, held alongside the Arab Championships for youth, junior and senior categories, as well as the ongoing West Asian Championships in Doha. “The successful staging of three major tournaments simultaneously reflects Qatar’s extensive experience and its ability to meet the highest international standards,” Jalood said Tuesday. “I commend the positive atmosphere surrounding the competitions, the quality of venues, accommodation, and the high level of security and comfort provided to athletes and delegations,” he added. According to the IWF president, the events’ success is the result of Qatar’s strong technical and organisational expertise, coupled with its readiness to provide all necessary resources.The championships have attracted more than 320 athletes from 28 countries, including 18 Arab nations, and have already produced intense competition and new records across several weight categories. Echoing these sentiments, Mohamed Abdelmaksoud, president of the Egyptian Weightlifting Federation and a member of the IWF Executive Committee, described Qatar’s organisation as exceptional. Meanwhile Egyptian referee Gouda Abdel-Sadek, supervisor of the weightlifting competitions in the combined Qatar Cup, Arab Championship, and West Asian Championships, said that the atmosphere in the competitions was of high intensity for senior and junior lifters. Abdel-Sadek added that the athletes demonstrated high technical levels, evident in their outstanding performance and strong adherence to the rules, which contributed to fair and exciting competitions throughout the championship. He emphasized that such championships represent a golden opportunity for exchanging experiences between the participating teams and raising the level of weightlifting in the region.Asma happy with performance in DohaAsma Al-Ghamdi, assistant coach of the Saudi weightlifting team, Tuesday said she was thrilled with her debut participation in Doha. She said: I am so proud and honoured at the opportunity to be here. I am competing with the new generation of weightlifters.” She explained that the injury she sustained as a player was a significant turning point in her athletic career, prompting her to transition to proper coaching and share her experience with young athletes. Al-Ghamdi stated that despite the difficulties she faced when stepping away from competition, she found a new passion and a great sense of responsibility in coaching. She praised the outstanding levels and results achieved by the Saudi national weightlifting team, which ‘reflect the team’s great effort and commitment of the authorities back home’. She commended the organization of the championship held in Qatar, noting that the environment was ideal for the athletes and coaching staff, contributing to strong and impressive competitions that underscored the importance of the tournament.  Related Story Source link

Ri Chong-song produces commanding show in Doha

In a commanding performance, North Korea’s Ri Chong-song Tuesday lifted 366kg in the 79kg weight class, surpassing the previous record held by Indonesia’s Rizki Juniansyah by one kilogram on day four of the Qatar International Cup – part of the combined 10th Qatar International Cup, the Arab Championship and the West Asian Championships. With this new record, Chung-song solidified his status as one of the greatest weightlifters in the world. Ri Chong-song won all three gold medals in the snatch (162kg), clean and jerk (204kg) for a total of 366kg, setting a new world record. This achievement aligns him with fellow North Korean, Oh Kwang-ok, who holds a women’s record in the 58kg weight class. Despite his strong performance, he was unable to break the individual snatch and clean and jerk records, which remain with Egypt’s Abdelrahman Younes (166kg, snatch) and Indonesia’s Rizki Junyansah (205kg in the clean and jerk). The silver medals in the snatch and total went to Tunisian weightlifter Karim Ben Hnia (151kg and 336kg, respectively), while he also secured the bronze medal in the clean and jerk (185kg). Turkmen Gaygysyz Torayev won a silver medal in the clean and jerk (190kg) and a bronze medal in the total (330kg), while Saudi weightlifter Mohammed Bassam al-Marzouq won a bronze medal in the snatch (150kg). In the men’s competitions at the Arab Weightlifting Championships, which saw fierce competition as Tunisian weightlifter Karim Ben Hnia won three gold medals in the snatch (151kg), clean and jerk (185kg), for a of total (363kg). Saudi lifter al-Marzouq finished in second place, winning three silver medals in the snatch (150kg), clean and jerk (178kg), and total (328kg). Algerian lifter Farajallah Samir won two bronze medals in the snatch (140kg) and total (310kg), while Egyptian weightlifter Ali Abdel-Radi won a bronze medal in the clean and jerk with a lift of 175kg. The West Asian Weightlifting Championships were marked by strong participation, with Saudi weightlifter al-Marzouq winning three gold medals in the snatch (150kg), clean and jerk (178kg), and total (328kg). Bahraini weightlifter Abdullah Yahya al-Majdami came in second place, winning two silver medals in the clean and jerk (156kg) and total (286kg), and a bronze medal in the snatch (130kg). Emirati weightlifter Issa Rajab al-Balushi won a silver medal in the snatch (131kg), and Omani weightlifter Mahmoud al-Batashi won two bronze medals in the clean and jerk (155kg) and total (274kg). In the women’s competitions at the Arab Championship witnessed fierce competition in the 63kg weight class. Tunisian weightlifter Chaima Rahoumi won three gold medals in the snatch (89kg), clean and jerk (110kg), and total (199kg). Red Bull CEO has ‘no doubt’ Verstappen finishes career with team

While there has been plenty of doubt about where Max Verstappen will end up before his Formula 1 career is done, Red Bulls CEO Oliver Mintzlaff is less speculative.”I ‌feel there is a huge mutual appreciation and ‌loyalty,” Mintzlaff said ‍to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf about Red Bull’s top driver. “For me there is ⁠no doubt that Max Verstappen will ⁠end his career at Red Bull.”Verstappen, 28, was the four-time ‍defending F1 drivers’ champion heading into the 2025 season. He got off to an unexpected slow start and did not exactly squash rumors that he might leave his team through performance clauses in his contract.At the end of July, though, Verstappen said he was staying with Red Bull through the ‌2026 season, ending speculation that he might depart to drive for Mercedes.The commitment was most notable on the track, with Verstappen winning six ‍of the final nine races ⁠after winning just ‌twice over the first 15 races. The late push nearly ended up in a fifth consecutive drivers title, before Lando Norris won his first title in his seventh season.”What is important to say is that I am not afraid of any performance clause in his contract,” Mintzlaff said. “What is most important for an athlete is to see that everyone in the team gives everything for him. And I think Max has been impressed by the way the ​results and the atmosphere ‌in the team have turned this year.”Verstappen remains under contract with Red Bull through 2028 ⁠but said he ‍will still walk away early pending F1’s decision on new technical regulations with engines and car setups.”I’ve hated this car at times, but I’ve also loved it at times,” Verstappen said after he finished two points shy of the drivers’ title. “And I always tried to ​extract the most from it, even in the difficult weekends that we’ve had.”In a moment that perhaps inspired Mintzlaff’s confidence that his top driver will remain with the team for the long term, Verstappen had praise for everybody associated with Red Bull.”I mean, I have no regrets about my season,” Verstappen said. “Also, in the team, we have a great atmosphere at the moment. ⁠We’re really on a roll – positive energy, belief, confidence – and that’s exactly what you want heading into next year.”  Related Story Source link

India to provide $450 million to cyclone-ravaged Sri Lanka

India has committed $450 million in humanitarian assistance to help Sri Lanka recover from the devastating damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah, foreign minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said Tuesday on a visit to the country.The cyclone killed more than 640 people when it swept across the South Asian island last month, causing floods and landslides that inflicted about $4 billion in damage, according to the World Bank, or 4 per cent of the country’s GDP.Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has described the storm, which affected more than two million people, as the most challenging natural disaster in the island’s history.Jaishankar, who is on a two-day visit, told a media briefing in Colombo he had handed a letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Dissanayake, committing to a “reconstruction package of $450 million”.While $350 million will take the form of “concessional lines of credit”, the remaining $100 million will be given as grants.Jaishankar also noted the 1,100 tons of relief material, along with medicine and other necessary equipment, sent to India’s southern neighbour in the cyclone’s immediate aftermath.”Given the scale of damage, restoring connectivity was clearly an immediate priority,” he said, detailing the Indian military’s assistance in providing portable bridges.Jaishankar said India would also look at other ways to mitigate the losses, including encouraging Indian tourism to Sri Lanka.”Similarly, an increase in foreign direct investment from India can boost your economy at a critical time,” he added.The cyclone struck as Sri Lanka was emerging from its worst-ever economic meltdown in 2022, when it ran out of foreign exchange reserves to pay for essential imports such as food, fuel and medicines.Following a $2.9 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund approved in early 2023, the country’s economy has stabilised.  Source link
