Dozens of masked Israeli settlers attacked homes surrounding the occupied West Bank village of Qusra yesterday, the first major attack since a siege by settlers in the area earlier this month drew an international outcry.The settlers surrounded a Palestinian home, throwing stones while seven Palestinians were trapped inside, according to witnesses who spoke to Reuters.Saddam Oday, one of those trapped, said the Israeli military fired tear gas into the home and detained the residents inside while letting him go.He said the Israeli military had not detained any of the settlers and had allowed them to leave.The owner of the house, Luay Bayruti, said when the military arrived they handcuffed, blindfolded and beat those inside, before later releasing them.AFP footage of Qusra yesterday showed dozens of Israeli forces deployed to the site.The Israeli military said in a statement that troops and border police forces had arrived on the scene to remove “rioters”, and protect the residents inside the house.The military did not immediately respond to a request for comment on why they had reportedly fired tear gas at the house and detained and beaten the residents.It said soldiers and border police forces were dispatched “following reports that Israeli rioters had arrived in the area and that violent clashes had occurred, including stone-hurling toward Palestinians and additional civilians”.”Upon their arrival, the security forces identified dozens of rioters who had barricaded themselves inside a Palestinian home while Palestinian residents were inside,” a military statement said, adding that it was “aware of reports of Palestinian injuries”.It said forces had worked to remove the settlers from the house, separate the groups, and confiscate vehicles “that were suspected of having been used to reach the area”.The vehicles would be used as evidence in a police investigation that has been opened, it said, adding that forces continued to operate in the area “to prevent further disturbances and restore order”.”The security forces strongly condemn all forms of violence,” it said.Bayruti said that after calling the Israeli military for help, he and six others were trapped inside the home for more than an hour as settlers threw stones.Bayruti showed a Reuters reporter his bandaged arm, which he said had been injured by a stone during the attack.Oday, a medic, said four of those trapped had suffered injuries due to the tear gas, and two had suffered injuries from the stones thrown by settlers.The attack occurred a few hundred yards away from three homes to which settlers laid siege this month, drawing international condemnation and a massive Israeli military deployment that residents say has kept them effectively trapped in their homes.Weeks later, Israeli forces continue to operate in the area while settlers still roam the surrounding hills.”They spotted the residents working on their house, which is still under construction and they started throwing rocks,” said Loui Ridi, a Palestinian-American whose home was one of the three under siege this month.He said he watched yesterday’s attack occur from his home.Ridi said he had seen near-daily encroachments of Israeli settlers into the area surrounding his home, despite the heavy Israeli military presence in the area.Rights groups say the increasing settler presence on the edge of Palestinian villages, like Qusra, is part of a wider effort by settlers to seize more land from Palestinians, further eating into territory where Palestinians aim to establish a state.Violence by Jewish settlers in the occupied West Bank has been on the rise, with some emboldened by the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has overseen a massive settlement expansion in the territory.Netanyahu has not commented on the situation in Qusra.The Israeli military said in its statement that along with the border police it would continue “to operate in the areas of Qusra and (neighbouring) Jalud to prevent further disturbances and restore order in the area”.UN bodies and most countries deem the settlements illegal under international law regarding military occupations.Israel rejects this, viewing the area as disputed rather than occupied.More than 500,000 Israelis live in settlements in the Palestinian territory among some 3mn Palestinians.Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967.According to an AFP tally based on data from the Palestinian health ministry, Israeli forces or settlers have killed at least 1,103 Palestinians in the West Bank, including civilians, since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023.Israeli figures show at least 48 Israelis, including civilians and security personnel, have been killed in Palestinian attacks or during Israeli military operations during the same period.  Source link

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will step up efforts to isolate Iran economically as he hosts G20 counterparts this week, a US official said last week, in a gathering clouded by war and trade tensions. Finance ministers and central bank governors from the Group of 20 major economies are due to convene in mountainous Asheville, North Carolina, this Monday and Tuesday. Their talks are the first of several key ministerial meetings this year, setting the stage for a G20 leaders’ summit President Donald Trump will host in December in Florida. In Asheville, US officials will stress to G20 members the importance of complying with its sanctions on Iran, as it ramps up pressure on Tehran amid war in the Middle East, a Treasury official told reporters. The official signaled Bessent will make direct appeals to counterparts in bilateral meetings. But they stopped short of sharing who he had scheduled talks with and whether they include China. The G20 comprises 19 nations plus the European Union and the African Union. It was established in the wake of the 1997-1998 Asian financial crisis to boost global economic and financial stability. But South Africa has been excluded from the G20 under the US presidency this year, while Washington invited Poland to a seat at the table. This week, US officials will also push to address concerns like excess industrial capacity, promoting stronger economic growth and building reliable supply chains for critical resources like energy. Although G20 talks broadened to cover issues like climate change and global health over time, analysts expect Washington to advocate a “back-to-basics” approach this year. This means a renewed focus on debt, trade, financial stability and banking regulation, Josh Lipsky, chair of international economics at the Atlantic Council think tank, told AFP. The upcoming gathering, however, comes as US global leadership faces a test.Worries about US debt levels are growing, while Trump’s sweeping tariffs targeting competitors — and longtime allies like Canada — have strained ties. Countries are also grappling with economic fallout after US-Israel strikes on Iran from February plunged the Middle East into war, causing energy costs to surge. Bessent has laid out plans to isolate Iran economically, widening secondary sanctions threats and warning of dire consequences for countries that fail to join the campaign. But doing so will likely require taking on China, the main buyer of Iranian oil — a difficult task ahead of Trump’s expected September summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. With a US-Canada trade war and Bessent warning of sanctions hitting other members around the table, “it just creates the broader feeling of, could this group fracture?” Lipsky said. “I think that’s really the challenge for this meeting,” he said. (Reuters) Croatian Filip Hrgovic pulled off a stunning comeback to beat British prodigy Moses Itauma by technical knockout to claim the vacant IBF world heavyweight title in thrilling fashion at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday.Outpointed over the first eight rounds, the 34-year-old Croatian turned the tide in the ninth, taking advantage of his young opponent’s exhaustion to force the stoppage in the ninth round to become Croatia’s first heavyweight world champion.Itauma came into Saturday’s bout with 12 knockouts in 14 professional fights unbeaten, and it looked like he was about to add a 13th as he pounded his opponent with powerful punches to the head and body. Attempting to become the second-youngest heavyweight champion of the world behind Mike Tyson, the 21-year-old’s fast hands connected repeatedly with Hrgovic’s head, but the Croatian displayed tremendous resilience, despite being on the receiving end of a standing eight count early in the fight.Itauma landed a stunning uppercut as the bell sounded to end the fifth round, but Hrgovic managed to recover, and he played with fire again at the end of the sixth as Itauma pounded him late in the frame. Worn out from his efforts, Itauma slowed as the fight wore on and Hrgovic pounced in the ninth, forcing the young Briton back onto the ropes and overwhelming him with shots, forcing the referee to call off the fight as the towel came in from Itauma’s corner.”He’s an amazing fighter, I want to thank him for accepting this fight, to give me a chance to become a new star in the heavyweight division. I am the present, and he is definitely the future,” Hrgovic said. “He’s an amazing fighter, he’s one of a kind, he’s the best I’ve been in the ring with, but he needs more experience. He gassed out … I knew that I have that pace in my favour.”Hrgovic said hewants a unification fight against WBC champion Agit Kabayel, who stepped into the ring to congratulate the new champion, but promoter Frank Warren quickly killed that idea, saying that he must fight Frank Sanchez next.   Related Story Source link
