Prime Minister of Malaysia Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the depth of the cultural ties between his country and India, stressing the growing importance of their relationship in light of the current geopolitical shifts. This came during a bilateral meeting held on Sunday in Malaysia between Anwar Ibrahim and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during which he expressed Kuala Lumpur’s desire to expand areas of cooperation with New Delhi, particularly following Modi’s official two-day visit to Malaysia. For his part, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi noted that relations between India and Malaysia have witnessed remarkable and rapid development in recent years. Modi explained that cooperation between the two countries spans multiple fields, including agriculture, manufacturing, clean energy, the semiconductor industry, skills development and capacity building, as well as defense and security cooperation. He also emphasized the importance of joint coordination in combating terrorism, pointing out that India and Malaysia, as maritime neighbors, are required to strengthen their partnership amid the global state of instability. He confirmed that the objective of his visit is to elevate the bilateral partnership to new levels, in a way that enhances cooperation and shared prosperity between the two countries across various sectors.  Source link

Two people were killed and eight others injured when a three-story building collapsed in Kota, Rajasthan, in northwestern India.Indian police reported that a building in the Kota area collapsed suddenly, killing two and injuring eight others, five of whom are in stable condition. Building collapses are common in India, affecting both new and old structures. Construction experts attribute these incidents to mismanagement, citing the use of substandard building materials and the lack of oversight and enforcement of construction safety standards for both buildings and workers.  At least eight people have died as a result of the Tropical Storm Basyang, according to the Philippine authorities.Deputy Spokesman for the Philippine Office of Civil Defense Diego Agustin Mariano explained that four people died in Cagayan de Oro City as a result of a landslide that swept through a residential area. Three others died in Iligan City due to flooding, and one person drowned in Agusan del Norte province. Local authorities indicated that about 3,800 families were affected by the rising floodwater levels in some areas, prompting the evacuation of more than 2,000 people in Cagayan de Oro. Thousands of travelers across the country were also stranded after cruises were suspended due to bad weather.  Source link

Israeli attacks on Lebanon continued, with shelling targeting several towns in the country’s southern regions.The Lebanese National News Agency reported that Israeli occupation forces targeted, earlier on Saturday, outskirts of the towns of Alma Al-Shaab and Aita Al-Shaab with machine-gun fire.A ceasefire agreement in southern Lebanon entered into force on 27 November 2024, stipulating the withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces from border villages and towns in southern Lebanon within 60 days. Subsequently, the Beirut government approved an extension of the deadline until 18 February; however, the occupation army remained at five points.Israeli occupation forces continue to commit violations, which exceeded 7,000 airspace breaches and more than 2,400 military activities within the area of operations of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon since last November.  Source link

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam reaffirmed that the ongoing Israeli violations constitute an assault on Lebanon’s sovereignty and on the lives of civilians and their right to live in safety.During a tour of southern Lebanon, Salam said that the right of the people of the South to security, to their homes and land, and to a dignified life is an indivisible national right, stressing the continued presence of the state in southern Lebanon.He explained that his government’s work is proceeding along three main pillars, foremost among them safeguarding the dignity of displaced persons who have not yet been able to return, supporting returnees, and ensuring a better life for all residents. These efforts are being pursued through three integrated tracks: the continuation of relief efforts, reconstruction, and the provision of conditions for economic and social recovery and development.Concurrently, the Lebanese Prime Minister announced during the tour the launch of a number of reconstruction projects after securing the necessary funding, whether from the state budget or through concessional loans amounting to USD 250 million from the World Bank, in addition to EUR 75 million from the French Development Agency, as well as grants totaling EUR 35 million from the European Union, France, and Denmark to support economic recovery. Canada and France have established consulates in the capital of the autonomous Danish territory of Greenland, a move signaling support for the local government amid regional tensions.Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, speaking before raising the national flag at the new diplomatic mission, hailed the occasion.”This is a very important day for us as a country, because we’re opening our consulate here in Nuuk, Greenland,” Anand said, noting that the move follows Ottawa’s 2024 pledge to bolster cooperation with Greenland.France’s Consul General, Jean-Noel Poirier, arrived in Nuuk on Friday to assume his duties immediately, meeting with Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen.Since beginning his second term last year, the US President has pushed for Washington to take control of the mineral-rich, strategically located Arctic island for security reasons.While he stepped back from those threats last month, announcing a “framework” deal with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to ensure greater US influence, a joint task force between the US, Denmark, and Greenland is now reviewing Washington’s security concerns in the Arctic.Greenland has maintained diplomatic ties with the European Union since 1992, Iceland since 2017, and Washington since 2014. The United States, which previously operated a consulate there between 1940 and 1953, reopened its mission in 2020, followed by the European Commission in 2024.  Related Story Source link

(AFP/File Photo) The United States embassy will have “no further dealings” with the speaker of the Polish parliament after claims he insulted President Donald Trump, its ambassador said Thursday.Tom Rose said the decision was made because of speaker Wlodzimierz Czarzasty’s “outrageous and unprovoked insults” against the US leader.”We will not permit anyone to harm US-Polish relations, nor disrespect (Trump), who has done so much for Poland and the Polish people,” Rose wrote on X.Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk responded the same day, writing on X: “Ambassador Rose, allies should respect, not lecture each other.””At least this is how we, here in Poland, understand partnership.”On Monday, Czarzasty criticised a joint US-Israeli proposal to support Donald Trump’s candidacy for the Nobel Peace Prize.”I will not support the motion for a Nobel Peace Prize for President Trump, because he doesn’t deserve it,” he told journalists.Czarzasty said that rather than allying itself more closely with Trump’s White House, Poland should “strengthen existing alliances” such as NATO, the United Nations and the World Health Organisation.He criticised Trump’s leadership, including the imposition of tariffs on European countries, threats to annex Greenland, and, most recently, his claims that NATO allies had stayed “a little off the front lines” during the war in Afghanistan.He accused Trump of “a breach of the politics of principles and values, often a breach of international law”.After Rose’s reaction, Czarzasty told local news site Onet: “I maintain my position” on the issue of the peace prize.”I consistently respect the USA as Poland’s key partner,” he added later on X.”That is why I regretfully accept the statement by Ambassador Tom Rose, but I will not change my position on these fundamental issues for Polish women and men.”The speaker heads Poland’s New Left party, which is part of Tusk’s pro-European governing coalition, with which the US ambassador said he has “excellent relations”.It is currently governing under conservative-nationalist President Karol Nawrocki, a vocal Trump supporter.In late January, Czarzasty, along with several other high-ranking Polish politicians, denounced Trump’s claim that the United States “never needed” NATO allies.The parliamentary leader called the claims “scandalous” and said they should be “absolutely condemned”.Forty-three Polish soldiers and one civil servant died as part of the US-led NATO coalition in Afghanistan.  Related Story Source link

 Australia and Indonesia signed a security treaty yesterday, paving the way for closer co-operation and new military training facilities in the latter. The pact will facilitate defence initiatives that include embedding a senior Indonesian officer within Australia’s defence force, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said after the signing in Jakarta. Australia will also support the development of military training facilities to boost Indonesia’s ability to conduct joint drills, he said. Canberra has been seeking to bolster its military power in the Asia-Pacific region to counter China’s growing influence. Indonesia has proven more cautious with its foreign policy, not wanting to be seen taking sides and upsetting Beijing, its biggest trading partner. Albanese hailed the agreement as “a historic moment in our nations’ relationship”. “Australia and Indonesia share one of the world’s longest maritime boundaries, which naturally makes us close partners. But today, we are more than just partners, we are close friends,” he added.   Source link
