(Reuters) A long-awaited new bridge between Canada and the US, threatened by President Donald Trump earlier this year, will open for public use in late July, officials said Friday. “Today, Canada and Michigan have agreed to open the Gordie Howe International Bridge on July 27, with the support of the US Government,” Canada’s Ministry of Infrastructure said in a statement, adding the bridge “ will be a vital economic link between Canada and the US — generating billions of dollars in economic activityfor decades to come.” The $4.7bn (CAN$6.4bn) bridge, which connects Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, has been under construction since 2018. Prior to the announcement, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney last month said the bridge’s inauguration had been delayed indefinitely at the request of the US due to “technical issues.” In February, Trump threatened to fully block the bridge, insisting that the US had been treated unfairly in its construction and that it should be “at least half” US-owned. According to a fact sheet issued by the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, the bridge was financed entirely by Canada and will be jointly owned by Canada and the US state of Michigan. It is named after late Canadian-born National Hockey League great and Detroit Red Wings star Gordie Howe, in what was meant to be a symbol of unity between Canada and the US. Japan’s space agency, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), successfully conducted the maiden flight test of its experimental reusable rocket on Saturday, marking a significant step toward developing reusable launch technology aimed at reducing launch costs and strengthening the country’s competitiveness in the global space industry. The RV-X rocket lifted off from JAXA’s Noshiro Rocket Testing Center in northeastern Japan, ascended vertically, hovered, moved horizontally while maintaining an upright position, and landed safely during a flight lasting less than one minute. According to JAXA, the vehicle reached an altitude of about 11 meters and traveled approximately 16 meters horizontally before touching down as planned. The successful test represents an important milestone in Japan’s efforts to develop reusable launch vehicles that could eventually succeed the country’s current H3 rocket, the mainstay of its space launch program, which is designed for single use. China’s national weather observatory on Saturday issued a red alert for rainstorms, the highest level in its four-tier warning system, as Typhoon Bavi is expected to make landfall along the country’s eastern coast early Sunday.The National Meteorological Center (NMC) warned that heavy to extremely heavy rainfall could affect several regions, forecasting cumulative precipitation of 250 to 500 millimeters in parts of eastern and southern Zhejiang Province and northern Fujian Province.It added that central and northern parts of Taiwan could receive 250 to 800 millimeters of rainfall as the storm moves across the region.Chinese authorities have stepped up emergency preparedness measures ahead of the typhoon, including large-scale evacuations, transport disruptions and the deployment of emergency response teams across the eastern coastal provinces.Earlier, the China Climate Center forecast above-average tropical cyclone activity in July, with several storms expected to make landfall or affect China’s coastal regions during the month. China evacuates over one million as Typhoon Bavi nears : Reuters China evacuated more than 1.8 million people on Saturday as Typhoon Bavi churned toward thethe major eastern city of Wenzhou after pummelling Japan’s southern Sakishima island chain with heavy rain and violent winds and brushing past northern Taiwan.Even as Bavi continues to slow and weaken on its northwesterly path over cooler seas, the typhoon is still a potent risk due to the sheer volume of moisture it holds within its rain bands, about the size of France from end to end.Bavi had maximum sustained winds of 144 km per hour (90 mph), equivalent to Category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind scale, and was about 200 km (124 miles)southeast of Wenling in the eastern province of Zhejiang as of 0808 GMT, according to the National Meteorological Center.Bavi is forecast to make landfall around Wenzhou, home to some 10 million people, early on Sunday.State media said more than 1.7 million people had been evacuated across Zhejiang province, where Wenzhou is located, and more than 100,000 in neighbouring Fujian province.”I’m a little worried, but I think it’ll be OK. We’ve been through typhoons before. We’ll get through it,” said Wenzhou resident Huang Xinghuan, 50, who was out buying groceries at a traditional wet market before it closed ahead of the typhoon.Huang said his family had stocked about two to three days’ worth of water. “I think supplies are well guaranteed now. There’s no need to panic or stockpile a lot of food or other supplies,” he added.While Japan and Taiwan have not so far reported any deaths from the typhoon, 17 people died in the Philippines due to heavy rains brought by an enhanced southwest monsoon, worsened by Bavi’s impact.Taiwan’s fire department said 87 people had been injured, mostly falls from motorcycles or bicycles, as well as people falling over or being struck by objects.TAIWAN SPARED WORST OF BAVIIn Taiwan, the government evacuated more than 14,000 people from mainly mountainous areas as the island shut down for the approach of Bavi to the north.While Bavi did not make landfall in Taiwan, the government took precautions to prevent loss of life, given forecasts for almost 1 metre (3 feet) of rain in some areas.Most of those evacuated were in areas in the north and east, with 920 international flights cancelled, effectively closing Taiwan’s main international airport at Taoyuan, outside the capital Taipei, as well as all 282 domestic flights.Almost all cities and counties across Taiwan declared a typhoon holiday for Saturday, closing any offices and schools that may have been open on the weekend, though in Taipei some restaurants and convenience stores remained open.The main north-south high-speed rail line also continued to operate, but with reduced service.In downtown Taipei some people were still out on the street in blustery wind and rain.”It’s OK, it’s not that serious,” said Yeh Mao-hsiung, 68, out for a morning walk with his dog. “It’s just a little bit more wind.”But in Taipei’s Beitou neighbourhood in the foothills of the mountains surrounding the city, gusts of around 100 kph knocked down trees and swelled rivers.In Wenzhou, Chen Qiuqin, in her 60s, walked through steady rain on her way to her parents’ home to help them prepare for the typhoon but said she was not too concerned given the government’s preparations.”I was worried about the flowerpots on my mother’s balcony, so I’m going to help move them inside. The US Department of Commerce loosened export controls on the United Arab Emirates yesterday, making it easier to export military items, certain commercial satellites and spacecraft, according to a US government posting in the Federal Register.The UAE government and approved companies also will now be able to access advanced computing items license-free, the posting said. UAE companies G42 and Core42 and US companies operating in the country, including Amazon, Apple, and xAI, are among those that no longer need licenses for AI chips and servers. In providing the more favorable treatment for certain exports to the UAE, the Commerce Department said the US had worked with the country for decades to counter Iran and its proxies, including Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis.”More recently, the UAE played a key role advancing US interests during Operation Epic Fury,” the posting said, referring to the US-Israeli strikes on Iran that began in February. Additionally, it noted, the UAE was the largest US trading partner in the Middle East, and that its foreign direct investment in the US was valued at over $1tn. Under the new regulation, the Commerce Department moved the UAE into a country grouping that allows more license exceptions for military and dual-use items controlled by the department. The UAE will be the only country in the group that is not a member of multilateral export control regimes. Other countries in the grouping include Nato countries and other allies. China's Ministry of Emergency Management on Thursday activated a Level-IV emergency response for flood control and typhoon prevention in the provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian provinces, with the possibility of upgrading the emergency response in accordance with the development of the typhoon.According to meteorological forecasts, the center of Super Typhoon Bavi was located over waters about 1,490 kilometers south-east of Keelung, Taiwan, on Wednesday.The typhoon is forecast to move westward before turning northwestward at a speed of around 15 to 20 km per hour, and may make landfall along the coast between Fuqing in Fujian Province and Wenling in Zhejiang Province on Saturday, as a strong typhoon.China has a four-tier emergency response system, with Level I being the most severe.
