US President Donald Trump said Sunday he was pleased by the recent signing of a defence pact between Saudi Arabia, Turkiye and Pakistan. “Very happy to see that Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, and Pakistan have recently, and finally, signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement,” he wrote on his Truth Social platform. “It shows how the Middle East is coming together, and how Countries will finally be able to defend themselves in a more meaningful way,” he wrote, calling it a “BIG, BOLD, IMPORTANT FIRST STEP.” Source link

Australia gun buyback to start in November, PM Albanese says

Australia’s New South Wales state will start a gun buyback in November, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said yesterday, part of the national response to a shooting spree that killed 15 at a festival in Sydney, the state capital.Albanese’s centre-left government enacted laws in January for the gun buyback, tighter checks for gun licences and a crackdown on hate in the wake of the December 14 gun attack at a Bondi Beach celebration in Australia’s most populous city.The alleged gunmen used powerful firearms that were legally obtained. Australia had a record 4.1mn firearms last year, the government has said, with more than 1.1mn of those in New South Wales, its most populous state.The buyback is to be Australia’s largest since a similar campaign after a 1996 massacre in Tasmania’s Port Arthur, in which a gunman killed 35 people.Albanese and New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said in a statement the scheme would start on November 2 and that people returning rifles and handguns would be eligible for up to A$1,000 ($700) compensation per firearm.”Australians are quite rightly proud of our gun laws, but the fact is there are more guns in Australia today than there were at the time of dealing with the Port Arthur gun buyback,” Albanese said in televised remarks.New South Wales now limits individuals to possession of four guns under its own reforms prompted by the Bondi Beach attack, which police say was carried out a father and son who police believe were inspired by the militant group Islamic State. The surviving suspect, Naveed Akram, 24, is yet to enter pleas to a raft of charges, including 15 counts of murder.  Source link

Monsoon rains submerge villages, fields in Myanmar

Severe monsoon flooding has swamped villages and paddy fields in central Myanmar, forcing people out of their homes including those already displaced by war, an AFP reporter and the UN said.”The suffering we are facing, I can’t even put into words how painful it is,” said Cho Myint, a 53-year-old villager from Wetlet township in the central Sagaing region.Standing by an upturned boat, she told AFP on Friday that her family had been forced to flee rising floodwaters and was “left with nothing”.The UN on Friday said that since July, severe monsoon flooding in Sagaing, Rakhine, Irrawaddy and Kachin states has affected an estimated 390,000 people — 230,000 in Sagaing alone.The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said the numbers included people affected by the civil war triggered by Myanmar’s 2021 military coup.U Sint, another villager from Wetlet township, said some war refugees in the area lived in small, temporary shelters that were “completely submerged”.”They couldn’t save anything. It is really terrible,” he said.The floods had also “ruined” many people’s livelihoods, he added.”The rice seedlings have already been swept away… In this area, it’s simply impossible to plant paddy anymore,” he told AFP.”Even if we were to sow seeds again, the land hasn’t emerged yet.”Myanmar’s Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement said that as of August 11, heavy rainfall and river flooding in Sagaing had forced more than 11,400 people from 3,220 households to relocate to flood relief centres.In Wetlet, Aung Ko stayed behind with his brother-in-law to look after their cow, saying only about 10 or 14 people remained.They have been living on an upper floor of their home under tarpaulins and surviving on instant noodles and bottled water provided by local rescuers visiting by boat.”Before the donors came, we had no choice but to take floodwater and boil it to drink,” he said, standing in knee-high muddy waters.OCHA spokesman Pierre Peron told AFP on Friday that the organisation had no figures yet for the number of people displaced by the heavy rains.But “with ongoing monsoon rainfall and several major rivers at or above danger levels, we unfortunately estimate that the impact of the flooding will continue in coming days and weeks”.UN partners were mobilising to help the most vulnerable, he said, yet the “flood damage to homes, shelters, infrastructure and farmland has exacerbated humanitarian needs, particularly for food, health services, safe water and livelihood support”.While seasonal monsoon brings rainfall that farmers depend on, climate change is making the phenomenon more erratic, unpredictable and deadly across the region.  Source link

Modi woos youth with free coaching, AI training

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said yesterday his government would provide free online coaching lessons for competitive exams, weeks after massive youth-led protests forced the education minister to resign.Modi said the initiative was aimed at easing the financial burden on millions of families caught up in the country’s fiercely competitive education system.The 75-year-old leader made the announcement while speaking from the ramparts of New Delhi’s imposing 17th-century Red Fort to mark the country’s independence from Britain on August 15, 1947.”We have decided to provide free online coaching for various competitive examinations for our youth. We have the digital public infrastructure, and we have highly talented teachers and educators,” he said.The move comes after nationwide protests triggered by the leak of a key medical entrance examination paper and a series of other recruitment scandals.The protests, which culminated in the resignation of education minister Dharmendra Pradhan last month, exposed deep frustration among young Indians over access to jobs and educational opportunities.They also highlighted immense pressures on students in India, the world’s most populous nation where admission to government-run colleges remains one of the most sought-after pathways to economic security.The cut-throat competition has fuelled a sprawling coaching industry where students spend years preparing, often at enormous financial cost for their families.Modi said the free online classes would ease financial burden on “poor and middle-class families”.”The competition surrounding coaching classes has become a huge burden for middle-class families… (Students) can stay close to their families, receive their care, and avoid placing an additional financial burden on them,” he said.Modi also announced plans to train several million young people in artificial intelligence tools.”We have decided in the next one year, one crore (10mn) youth will be given training in AI skills,” he said.Since the protests, authorities have attempted to appease the nation’s youth, with the parliament hiking penalties for leaking exam papers.Critics say the protests posed one of the biggest challenges to Modi’s government since coming to power in 2014.In a speech lasting more than an hour, Modi also reiterated his government’s vow to help India achieve the status of a developed country in the next 20 years, announcing a seven-point growth and reform framework.The initiative would focus on manufacturing, agriculture, technology and defence, as well as India’s “soft power” through yoga, tourism and handicrafts.India, Asia’s third-largest economy, must “establish itself as a trusted global supply chain partner for the world”, Modi said of manufacturing.In the coming years, he said India will have eight more semiconductor chip plants and five nuclear reactors which will generate 100 gigawatts of power by 2047.Last year, the government allowed private firms to build and operate atomic power projects, underlining a push for alternative energy.Modi said young people stood to gain the most from his vision for development.”The youth have a big role to play in the journey towards a developed India… the greatest beneficiary of a developed India is the youth of the country.”  Source link
