7 killed in firefighting helicopter crash in Argentina

 Seven people were killed Thursday when a firefighting helicopter crashed in western Argentina. Local authorities stated that the victims included members of the fire department, police, and civil protection services. The helicopter was en route to La Rioja Province in the northeast of the country to assist in containing a forest fire. Authorities lost contact this morning with the Bell 412 training helicopter while it was flying over the Ischigualasto Provincial Park, located approximately 1,200 kilometers from Buenos Aires. UNICEF: 23 children killed, 25 injured in Sudan’s North Kordofan in 2 months

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) confirmed that at least 23 children have been killed and 25 others injured in North Kordofan, western Sudan, since the conflict around the city of Al Obeid escalated in the past two months.Reports indicated that at least four children were recently killed in the Burbur area south of Al Obeid, bringing the total number of children killed or injured this month to at least eight, UNICEF explained in a statement.”Four more children have lost their lives in a conflict that continues to put children and their families in grave danger,” UNICEF Representative for Sudan Sheldon Yett said. “Behind every number is a child whose life has been cut short and a family whose future has been altered forever. Children continue to be the victims of this conflict. Their safety, their rights and the services they depend on must be protected.”Across Sudan, 330 children were reportedly killed or injured during the first six months of 2026, UNICEF reported. It stressed that ongoing violence, repeated displacement and damage to civilian infrastructure are putting children’s lives, wellbeing and future at risk.  Source link

Japan: 13 killed, hundreds evacuated after earthquake hits Kumamoto Prefecture

Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae announced on Wednesday that at least 13 people have been killed as a result of the earthquake that hit Kumamoto Prefecture in southern Japan on Tuesday.Japanese authorities reported an explosion at a shopping center in the prefecture’s Kashima area, where approximately 200 people were evacuated before the building’s second floor collapsed.Rescue efforts are ongoing, Shinkansen bullet train services have been suspended, and thousands of homes in the area are without power.The earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture on Tuesday measured 7.1 on the Richter scale, and tsunami warnings were issued for the Ariake and Yatsushiro Seas.  Source link

India summons Ukraine envoy over Black Sea ship attack

India summoned Ukraine’s top envoy in New Delhi yesterday to protest against an attack on a commercial vessel transiting the Black Sea that killed an Indian national. The Indian foreign ministry said it had summoned Ukrainian ambassador Oleksandr Polishchuk to convey its “serious concern” over the July 18 attack on the MV Omforfi.The ship had three Indian nationals on board, one of whom was killed.“ The ministry conveyed its serious concern over the incident and condemned such attacks on commercial shipping in the strongest terms,” it said in a statement.Polishchuk was asked to tell Kyiv that such actions, “which endanger the lives of innocent civilian seafarers, are unacceptable and must be avoided”. New Delhi had also summoned the Russian envoy last week to protest against an attack on a cargo ship leaving Ukraine’s port of Odesa that killed four Indian nationals.New Delhi has issued a string of security warnings for ships heading into the Black Sea that are locally flagged or employ its seafarers in the wake of the recent attacks.Fourteen Indian seafarers have also been killed in attacks on ships during the Middle East war, according to the foreign ministry. Netanyahu to meet Trump for first time since Iran war

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet US President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday for the first time since the start of the Iran war, over which they have publicly disagreed.Relations between Netanyahu and Trump have occasionally appeared strained in recent months, but both have sought to tone things down.Tuesday’s meeting is expected to be dominated by the war, which began with US-Israeli strikes on Iran in late February, as Washington says it wants to give negotiations a chance.Israel has not taken part in the latest round of hostilities between the United States and Iran, which flared earlier this month as an April ceasefire collapsed. Tuesday’s meeting will be the eighth between the leaders since Trump’s return to office last year, as well as their first in-person talks since the war began.”This is a great privilege, but it is also a great responsibility,” Netanyahu said before departing from Israel on Monday. “We will discuss all the issues on the agenda, first and foremost Iran. Naturally, our goal is to safeguard our security and also to expand the circle of peace around us,” he added. Upon arriving in Washington, Netanyahu attended a private memorial dinner on Monday evening in honour of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, his office said.He is also scheduled to attend the memorial service for Graham later on Tuesday.  Source link

India mulls tougher punishment for exam paper leaks after protests

India’s government proposed on Tuesday longer jail terms and heftier fines for examination paper leaks, seeking to restore confidence after youth-led protests focused on education reforms rocked the country. Under the proposed legal change submitted to parliament, the maximum prison term for those involved in paper leaks would be doubled to 10 years, while fines could exceed $1 million and court proceedings would be fast-tracked. The legislative push follows weeks of protests over exam paper leaks and other irregularities, which culminated in the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan last week. The protests, spearhead by the online Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) movement, drew massive support from young students across the country and presented a major challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. The proposed amendments reaffirm “this government’s deep commitment to safeguard the welfare of the students and the youth of this country”, senior minister Jitendra Singh told the lower house of the parliament.The changes seek to make the legislation “more stringent and to ensure speedy justice”, Singh said, “so that the credibility of all these exams gets enhanced and gets reinstated”.The parliament reconvened last week for its monsoon session, with the first few days repeatedly disrupted by opposition lawmakers seeking accountability over a police crackdown on the student-led protests.On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ordered the release of all detained protesters who are under the age of 18 and have no prior criminal record. Examination paper leaks have long plagued India’s highly competitive education system.The intense pressure to succeed has fuelled a vast network of coaching centres and created opportunities for criminal groups to profit by selling leaked question papers. Despite repeated government crackdowns, paper leaks have remained a recurring problem in both national and state-level examinations.Demonstrations in New Delhi turned violent on July 20 when huge crowds attempted to march towards parliament from the Jantar Mantar protest site.Police fired tear gas and used batons to disperse the protest, triggering clashes and a wave of detentions. Malaysia detains Rohingya refugees seeking shelter at UNHCR

(Reuters) Malaysian authorities detained more than 100 Rohingya Muslim asylum seekers Monday who had gathered outside the UN refugee agency in Kuala Lumpur, saying they were seeking protection after being evicted from their homes. All of the refugees outside the UNHCR were taken away with their belongings in four police trucks at around 8:30pm (1230 GMT), according to Reuters witnesses at the scene. A police official, who declined to be identified, said they were being taken to police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur for further checks. The refugees, who included women and children, said they were driven out of their homes by local residents in the northern state of Penang on Sunday and had travelled to the Malaysian capital on buses overnight to seek assistance on resettlement from the UNHCR. Penang police said the Rohingya “voluntarily moved” to Kuala Lumpur with the assistance of state and federal authorities, including the national security council. “This transfer was carried out due to economic and territorial competition that arose following an increase in the Rohingya population in the area,” Seberang Perai Utara district police chief Anuar Abdul Rahman said in a statement. The evictions came amid a rise in online hate speech and misinformation targeting the Rohingya since May that has led to greater harassment and scrutiny of the community, including widespread school closures. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Monday the gathering outside the UNHCR building had raised concerns from the public, and warned that anyone without proper permits would be detained by immigration authorities. “No one has the right to take over any part of the city,” he said in a video posted on social media. Bryony Lau, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch, said Rohingya refugees in Malaysia live under constant threat of arrests and raids in a climate of fear that has only gotten worse due to the surge of online hate directed towards them. “The Malaysian government should prioritise protecting refugees who have been evicted from their homes instead of terrifying them further by detaining them,” she said. Around 126,000 Rohingya Muslims were registered with the UNHCR in Malaysia as of the end of February, according to the agency’s website, though rights groups say many more remain undocumented. …
