(AFP) A Philippine congressional committee agreed overwhelmingly Wednesday to advance the impeachment case against Vice-President Sara Duterte, setting the stage for a potential vote that could decide her political future.The daughter of former president Rodrigo Duterte, who in February announced a 2028 presidential bid, was impeached last year, only for the Supreme Court to toss the case out over procedural issues.Under the Philippine constitution, an impeachment by the House of Representatives triggers a Senate trial, where a guilty verdict would ban Duterte from elected office for life.The new complaints, ruled “sufficient in substance” by a vote of 54-1 Wednesday, accuse her of graft and corruption while in office and of making a death threat against former ally President Ferdinand Marcos.She will now have 10 days to respond before the start of a hearing of probable cause necessary to move the complaints to a House vote.Duterte’s 2025 impeachment effectively bypassed the committee process, when the necessary one-third of House members signed an impeachment complaint, sending it directly to the Senate.”Our vote today is not a verdict of guilt nor an act of condemnation. It’s simply a decision on whether the constitutional process should move forward,” Representative Ferdinand Hernandez said minutes before the vote.The vice president’s legal team said Wednesday they would not comment on specific allegations.”For now, we will refrain from discussing the substance of the case in the media and will instead address these matters through the proper constitutional processes,” lawyer Michael Poa said in a statement.While a probable cause hearing still looms, Michael Tiu, assistant professor of law at the University of the Philippines, told AFP he believed nothing would derail the path to a House vote.”With the 54-1 gap in the committee voting, I think it’s impossible that these impeachment complaints will be junked, given that there’s a huge gap and many saw that the complaints have merit,” he said.Analysts have warned that Duterte’s presidential announcement will weigh heavily on lawmakers forced to gauge the repercussions of a vote against someone who may yet hold the country’s highest office.The alleged death threat against Marcos stems from a late-night press briefing in which Duterte claimed to have hired an assassin to kill the president and members of his family should he have her cut down first.While the vice-president later said the comments were misinterpreted, lawmaker Gerville Luistro said Wednesday that the alleged threats could destabilise institutions.”They carry weight. They create fear,” she said.Duterte and Marcos have been engaged in a high-stakes political brawl that erupted within weeks of their 2022 win in the presidential election, when the vice president was denied her favoured cabinet portfolios and instead named education secretary.The justice committee last month tossed out a pair of impeachment complaints against Marcos, ruling that allegations of corruption over a scandal involving bogus flood control projects lacked substance.  Related Story…

Italy PM announces plans to send air defenses to support gulf states

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced today that Italy will send air defenses to support Gulf states currently under attack from Iran.In a statement, Meloni said, “Italy, like the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, intends to send aid to the Gulf countries”.She said the support comes not just because “they are friendly nations but because there are tens of thousands of Italians there”, along with “around 2,000 Italian soldiers that must be protect.”Meloni revealed that authorizations ​are in place for the United States to use its bases in Italy for operations that do not include bombing, noting that any change to this would require the approval of the government and parliament. IAEA says no radioactive leaks detected at Iranian nuclear facilities

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Wednesday that no damage has been detected at facilities containing nuclear materials in Iran.In a statement posted on the X platform, the agency said that analysis of the latest available satellite imagery showed no damage at facilities housing nuclear materials, adding that there is currently no risk of radioactive leakage.The IAEA noted that damage was detected to two buildings near the Isfahan nuclear site, while no additional impact has been observed at the Natanz facility beyond the previously reported damage to its entrances.It added that no impact has been detected at other nuclear sites, including the Bushehr nuclear power plant. NATO has condemned Iran’s targeting of Turkiye, reaffirming its support for all member states amid rising regional tensions.NATO spokesperson Allison Hart said on Wednesday the alliance “strongly condemns Iran’s targeting of Turkiye and stands firmly with all allies, including Turkiye, at a time when Iran continues what she called indiscriminate attacks in the region”.She added that NATO’s deterrence and defense posture remains strong across all domains, including air and missile defense.Earlier in the day, Turkiye’s defense ministry announced that it had intercepted a ballistic missile headed towards Turkish airspace from Iran. The ministry said the missile was neutralized in a timely manner by NATO air and missile defense units deployed in the eastern Mediterranean.Ankara has said it reserves the right to respond to the incident, stressing that it remains in close coordination with NATO and other allied countries.The exchange marks a further escalation in tensions between Iran and several countries in the region, raising concerns among Western allies about the risk of a wider confrontation.  Source link

French President announces dispatching aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle to Mediterranean

French President Emmanuel Macron announced Tuesday that he has ordered the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, along with its air assets and escorting frigates, to sail to the Mediterranean, in response to the current situation in the Middle East.In a televised address tonight, he said urgent measures must be taken in the wake of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the threat to the Suez Canal and shipping lanes in the Red Sea, as the conflict expands.”We have economic interests that must be protected, as oil, gas, and international trade are heavily affected by this war,” he added.Macron pointed out that France has sent a frigate to Cyprus and has intercepted drones over the skies of its Gulf allies, with Rafale aircraft among the assets used, adding “We have defense agreements linking us with Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates”.He explained that France is assisting its citizens wishing to leave the region, and that two flights are scheduled to arrive in Paris this evening, stating that security measures have been reinforced at certain locations in France.Macron said Iran itself bears primary responsibility for the US-Israeli action, but he recalled that the United States and Israel decided to carry out military operations, and they executed them outside the scope of international law, which is something France cannot endorse.
