(AFP) US President Donald Trump criticised an Israeli strike on Beirut Sunday that threatened to complicate a framework deal to end the war between Washington and Tehran, even as he insisted an agreement remained close.In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs “should not have happened, particularly on a special day when we are so close to a Peace Deal with Iran” — an apparent reference to hopes of a signing Sunday, his 80th birthday. “We are very close to a Deal that will bring peace to the region, including to Lebanon, and all sides should stand down,” he wrote, urging those involved not to “blow it”.Israel said its attack on the Hezbollah stronghold targeted Iran-backed fighters. Lebanon’s civil defence said three people were killed. The strike followed what the Israeli military said were three projectiles launched by Hezbollah towards northern Israel.Iran’s chief negotiator, parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said the attack showed the US either lacked the will or the ability to honour its commitments. “If you do not have the will or the ability to fulfil your commitments, then there is no point in talking about continuing down this path,” he wrote on X. Tehran warned of a “strong response”, with its top joint military command saying the “finger is on the trigger”. Brigadier General Mohammad Jafar Asadi said the strike “will not go unanswered”, while Israel’s military said it was preparing for possible fire in the coming hours.Despite the rancour, both sides signalled that channels of dialogue remained open. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said the Supreme National Security Council — which he noted oversees “decisions regarding war and negotiations” — had concluded the path of talks should be pursued. US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said he did not expect the strike to disrupt progress: “It is not a matter of if. It is a matter of when.”A delegation from mediator Qatar flew to Tehran Sunday morning to help finalise the agreement, sources told Reuters and AFP. Pakistan, also a mediator, had joined Trump on Saturday in predicting a Sunday signing. But Tehran cast doubt on the timing, with Iran’s Fars news agency reporting that no final decision had been taken and that political, legal and technical reviews were still under way. “Even if all of Iran’s views are incorporated, no agreement will be signed within the timeframe announced by Trump,” a source close to the negotiating team said.Under draft terms described by multiple sources, the US would release some $25bn in frozen Iranian assets and waive sanctions on Iranian oil exports in return for Tehran reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has effectively blockaded — pushing up global energy prices. The US has responded with its own blockade of Iranian ports. Hegseth said the naval blockade would end immediately once an accord was signed, with the US ready to clear the strait for safe transit.Iran’s nuclear programme would be tackled during a subsequent 60-day negotiation. A senior Iranian official said Tehran had agreed to maintain the nuclear status quo — no enrichment or expansion of facilities — until a final deal. Washington says the agreement would ultimately dismantle Iran’s programme, with its highly enriched uranium destroyed and removed; Tehran, which denies seeking a bomb, insists the stockpile be diluted inside the country.  Related Story Source link

Prime Minister of Pakistan, Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif announced on Saturday that a deal between the United States and Iran is likely to be signed within the next 24 hours.In a post on X, Sharif said, ‘Pakistan is preparing for the electronic signing of the peace deal immediately after, followed by technical level talks next week.’He also thanked both the US and Iran for their ongoing commitment during the negotiations.’We are confident that this historic peace deal will form a strong foundation for lasting peace,’ the Pakistani Premier added.On Thursday, US President, Donald Trump had announced that US Vice President, JD Vance will attend the signing ceremony of the US-Iran deal, adding that the ceremony is expected to take place in Europe early this week.  Source link

Palestinian and Israeli civil society groups urged support for a two-state solution, saying “the window of opportunity” was closing, as they met in Paris on yesterday.The government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, one of the most right-wing in Israel’s history, vehemently opposes the emergence of a sovereign and fully independent Palestinian state in the occupied West Bank and Gaza, and is working on the ground to undermine the possibility of a two-state solution.The Paris meeting came ahead of a G7 summit in the French town of Evian-les-Bains next week and was attended by the EU’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas as well as ministers from Brazil, Canada, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey.In a statement, representatives of Palestinian and Israeli civil society groups called on G7 leaders to urgently take action.”Israelis and Palestinians alike remain trapped in fear, insecurity, and trauma,” they said.”The window for a solution remains open; but it is narrowing. This moment requires urgent diplomacy, grounded in partnership with civil society.”The groups proposed an eight-point action plan, calling in particular for the implementation of a permanent ceasefire, progress on a two-state solution and a halt to settlement expansion.Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot reaffirmed France’s support for the two-state solution, saying “this year could be decisive.”In a break with decades of Western foreign policy, France, Britain, Canada and several other countries last year recognised a Palestinian state.Both Israel and Hamas trade near-daily accusations of ceasefire violations and the Gaza Strip remains gripped by bloodshed as progress on permanently ending the war remains stalled.The Palestinian Authority led by president Mahmud Abbas appears extremely weakened and deeply unpopular.  Source link

The Arab League, Arab Labour Organization, Arab Council for Childhood and Development, and AGFUND called for stronger protection of children in Palestine and across the Middle East, while praising the outcomes of the 2025 Global Social Development Summit in Doha.In a joint statement marking the World Day Against Child Labor on June 12, the organizations warned that ongoing conflicts, displacement, poverty, and economic hardship are increasing child labor across the Arab region.They highlighted the severe humanitarian situation facing Palestinian children, particularly in Gaza, citing deprivation of food, shelter, education, and healthcare, and called for urgent international action to protect their rights.The organizations also welcomed the Doha Political Declaration and the Marrakesh Global Framework for Action Against Child Labor, stressing that ending child labor is both a moral and development imperative.They further called for decent employment opportunities, stronger enforcement of child protection laws, and enhanced digital safety measures for children.  Source link

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation in Kuwait announced temporary closure of the country’s airspace effective as of Thursday morning.Thursday flights will be diverted to alternative airports until the threat subsides, as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and security of air navigation and passengers.This measure was taken due to the Iranian attacks on Kuwait and the potential risks to civil aviation in the region, the Directorate said in a statement.The Directorate affirmed that it is continuously monitoring the developments in coordination with relevant authorities in Kuwait, assuring the airspace will reopen, and air traffic will resume as soon as the situation is resolved and the threat has been eliminated, as assessed by the relevant authorities.The Directorate urged all passengers and airlines to follow official updates and adhere to all relevant instructions and guidelines.  Source link

Iraq reiterated its call for an end to all forms of escalation and tension in the region and urged the use of dialogue and diplomacy to address conflicts and resolve disputes.President Nizar Amidi emphasized during a meeting of the Iraqi Presidency – the Council of Ministers, the Council of Representatives, and the Supreme Judicial Council – that the continuation of conflicts threatens the security and stability of the region’s peoples and negatively impacts the global economy, energy security, and international trade.The meeting also affirmed its rejection of the use of Iraqi territory to attack any country or harm the security and stability of the region’s nations. It stressed the importance of strengthening relations and understandings with the Arab and Islamic world in a way that serves common interests and enhances regional stability.The meeting emphasized that restricting the possession of weapons to the state is a fundamental pillar for strengthening the rule of law and upholding state authority, stressing that all military and security decisions must remain exclusively under the control of the state.  Source link

Gulf states have intercepted more than 7,000 Iranian ballistic missiles and drones, the GCC's top official said, condemning fresh strikes on Bahrain and Kuwait as a flagrant breach of sovereignty and a grave violation of international law.GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed al-Budaiwi said the bloc's member states had been subjected to sinful Iranian attacks with ballistic missiles and drones targeting infrastructure and vital civilian facilities, the latest being terrorist Iranian strikes on Bahrain and Kuwait Wednesday morning, in a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the Council states and the principles of good-neighbourliness, and a grave breach of international law, international humanitarian law and the United Nations (UN) Charter.Addressing the 167th meeting of the GCC Ministerial Council in Manama Wednesday, al-Budaiwi commended the efficiency and readiness of the armed forces of the GCC states, which professionally and capably intercepted more than 7,000 ballistic missiles and drones launched by Iran towards the GCC states, contributing to neutralising the threat and protecting lives, facilities and vital assets.Despite the gravity of these attacks, the GCC states chose restraint and wisdom, out of keenness to avoid sliding into cycles of escalation with unforeseeable consequences, he said. The General Command of the Bahrain Defence Force announced that its air defense systems intercepted and destroyed several treacherous Iranian aerial attacks.In a statement issued on Wednesday, the General Command affirmed that Iran continued its systematic hostile approach through its heinous missile and drone attacks targeting civilians in the Kingdom of Bahrain, stressing that the deliberate use of missiles and drones to target civilians and private property constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.The General Command urged the public to exercise caution regarding any unfamiliar or suspicious objects resulting from the remnants of the brutal Iranian attacks, and to avoid approaching or handling them and report them immediately.  Source link

Jordanian air defence systems announced the interception of five missiles launched from Iran targeting the Azraq region in the Zarqa governorate.The interception resulted in falling debris, but confirmed there were no human casualties or material damage, a military official at the General Command of the Jordanian Armed Forces confirmed.Specialized military engineering teams have been deployed to clear the missile debris and ensure no unexploded ordnance remains in the affected areas.  Source link
