Captain Shubman Gill hit an unbeaten 223 as India recorded the second-highest ODI chase of all time on Wednesday to beat the West Indies by eight wickets and clinch the series.West Indies posted 405-7 after three centuries in the innings, but India rode on a 255-run opening stand between Gill and Rohit Sharma (101) to achieve the target with 39 balls to spare in Guwahati as they took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.South Africa top the highest successful run chase in men's ODI cricket, scoring 438-9 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.India's previous best chase was 362 against Australia in Jaipur in 2019.’Great game. At the half time, 400 on the board, there was a a bit of pressure. No matter the pitch or ground, chasing 400 is not easy. Very proud of that performance and happy to stay unbeaten till the end,’ Gill said.Gill, who hit 110 in the opening win, went past his previous ODI best of 208 and reached his second double ton in 117 balls for the fastest 200 in ODI history. He hit 26 fours and eight sixes in his 133-ball knock.”I think every part of my body is cramping right now. It was very hot in the afternoon,’ Gill said.’I break the game into small parts. First we had a target in the powerplay that if we get to 75-80 runs without losing wickets, it was good. We knew once the ball got a little old it would be good to bat on. I thought if were around 200-210 around the 25-mark over, we would be good but we were around 230-240. And after that the pressure was never on us, it was on them,’ the Indian captain added. INDIAN OPENERS CAME OUT ROARINGBoth Gill and veteran opener Rohit came out roaring after the Indian bowlers took a beating on the batting-friendly pitch.Rohit, despite being 39, is looking ahead to the 2027 ODI World Cup and made his intent clear from the start, hitting Alzarri Joseph for two fours and a six in the second over.Gill reached his second successive hundred with a four off Joseph and soon Rohit raised his 35th ODI ton to the delight of a nearly-packed stadium filled with blue Indian jerseys.Rohit, who crossed 12,000 ODI runs during the knock, fell lbw off Jayden Seales and walked off with 10 fours and six sixes in his 75-ball blitz. His departure got previous match centurion Virat Kohli to the crease, but the star player got out on 29 much to the disappointment of the fans.Gill stood firm and along with Ruturaj Gaikwad, who made an unbeaten 31, the pair eased India towards victory.Earlier, John Campbell hit 101 to lay the foundations for West Indies' highest-ever ODI score and better their previous best of 389 against England. They ended up losing that game as well.Skipper Shai Hope (104) and Amir Jangoo (114) also struck centuries to boost the total.Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav struck twice to reach 200 ODI wickets.Roston Chase with his unbeaten 29 took West Indies past 400, a total that proved insufficient. The third match is on Saturday in New Chandigarh. BRIEF SCORESIndia 406 for 2 (Gill 223*, Rohit 101) beat West Indies 405 for 7 (Jangoo 114, Hope 104, Campbell 101, Kuldeep 2-65) by eight wickets Source link

Korean soldiers during an anti-terror drill at a hotel in Seoul yesterday. (AFP) Annual war games between Republic of Korea and the US will end around a week earlier than planned, both countries said yesterday, after US President Donald Trump ordered the “inappropriate and hostile” drills scaled back.Trump said on Sunday that he had told the Pentagon to curtail the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises — a day before they started — citing his “good relationship” with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.Pyongyang’s state media criticised the drills on Wednesday as a “most immediate and open threat”, without mentioning Trump’s order.Hours later, Seoul’s military said the drills would wrap up on Friday, not on August 27 as originally planned.”We have decided to adjust the UFS exercise period to run from the 17th to the 21st,” Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement. The decision was made “at the suggestion of the US side”, it added. The Pentagon said the “substantially reduced” drills would “preserve essential readiness and… (cause) no degradation to US training objectives”.The exercises are designed to prepare for a possible attack by North Korea. They were understood to consist of two phases: the first, focused on defending against potential North Korean threats, was due to run until Friday; and the second, focused on a counter-offensive, from August 24-27.The second phase is now understood to have been scrapped.A Korean military official told AFP that Seoul viewed the decision as “unusual”.Nuclear-armed North Korea has long voiced outrage at the exercises, considering them dress rehearsals for an invasion.Yesterday’s commentary by the state-run Korean Central News Agency said they pose “the most immediate and open threat” to North Korea and “regional security”.It did not mention Trump’s order or his desire to resume talks with Kim, with whom he has hinted at being in contact. In the initial announcement on his Truth Social platform, Trump described the drills as unfriendly towards a country that had been respectful to him.Seoul’s presidential office said on Tuesday the drills did not reflect “any intention to attack North Korea or escalate tensions on the Korean peninsula”.Trump has insisted that he is making the situation “much safer” through his ties with Kim.Asked on Monday whether Kim had responded to his requests for a conversation, Trump said: “Yeah, he has.”He said the discussions had been “very positive”, but provided no further detail. The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing unnamed US officials, that Trump is pushing aides to set up a meeting with Kim as soon as this autumn.”Reducing exercises could have a positive impact on the possibility of US-North Korea dialogue,” Park Won-gon, a professor at Ewha Womans University, told AFP.”The suspension of joint exercises has always been a prerequisite for North Korea to engage in dialogue with the US,” he added.Trump and Kim met three times in his first spell in the White House, but they have not held talks during his second term. The US stations about 28,500 troops in Korea to bolster the country’s defences, a legacy of the 1950-53 Korean War that ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty. However, Trump’s repeated criticism of time-honoured alliances has cast doubt on US commitments to security in East Asia and alarmed regional allies. Iran’s armed forces warned Gulf countries against assisting the US military yesterday, hours after the United Arab Emirates announced it was severing economic ties with Tehran following new attacks on shipping. The Gulf is dotted with US military installations, including in the UAE, which said on Tuesday that Iran had fired two ballistic missiles at vessels off its coast.Despite a recent lull in hostilities between the United States and Iran, the Strait of Hormuz — which Tehran has blockaded — remains a flashpoint, and attacks on commercial ships have continued.A framework US-Iran deal aimed at reopening the vital trade corridor collapsed, and although both sides recently said messages were being exchanged, US President Donald Trump on Tuesday insisted talks were off, taunting Iran with a social media post depicting the strait as a “NEW U.S. Territory”.Iranian armed forces chief of staff Ali Abdollahi, according to the Mehr news agency, warned “any assistance or facilitation provided to the aggressor US military amounts to participation in the US military operation”.The conflict broke out on February 28 with US-Israeli attacks on Iran, which retaliated with missile and drone strikes across the region.Since the start of the war, many Middle Eastern countries have said they would not allow the United States to use their territory as a launchpad for attacks, though Abdollahi cast doubt on those promises.”It seems unlikely that such a large number of military aircraft, particularly refuelling aircraft, could be present at regional bases without knowledge of host countries,” said Abdollahi, adding Gulf countries “should know that we are fully aware of the situation”.Media outlets have reported that Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Bahrain have all hit targets in Iran in retaliation for Tehran’s attacks on the Gulf, though the countries have mostly denied the reports. On Tuesday, the UAE announced that it was suspending all economic dealings with Iran.”In light of regional escalations… all trade, commercial exchanges, and financial transactions with Iran have been halted until further notice,” foreign ministry communications director Afra al-Hameli said.Earlier in the day, Abu Dhabi accused Iran of firing two ballistic missiles towards the country, later clarifying the salvo was directed at shipping. The neighbours across the Gulf share deep cultural and historical ties, and the UAE — home to a sizable Iranian community — had been a major trading partner for US-sanctioned Iran, at least before the war.The UAE recalled its ambassador to Tehran early in the conflict and has shut Iran-linked schools and a hospital.Tankers belonging to the UAE’s state-owned oil company ADNOC have been repeatedly targeted in the past few weeks.Top US diplomat Marco Rubio spoke to the UAE’s national security adviser by phone on Tuesday to discuss “coordination to hold Iran and its terrorist proxies accountable for ongoing attacks”, as well as the importance of free passage through Hormuz.Diplomatic efforts to settle the conflict have stalled, but Trump’s envoy and son-in-law Jared Kushner had said on Monday that the United States and Iran were having “very positive and active conversations”.The president, however, denied that was the case on Tuesday, again insisting that the Strait of Hormuz was open, despite the Iranian blockade having throttled traffic for months.”There are no talks or conversations going on, or scheduled, with the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Naval Blockade remains in full force and effect,” Trump wrote on social media, referring to a US counter-blockade of Iranian ports.Earlier Trump had posted a map showing the Strait of Hormuz as a “NEW U.S. Territory”, echoing a previous threat to annex the conduit for oil and gas shipments. * US debt has risen by $11.6 trillion during Trump’s two terms in the White House Total U.S. debt has topped $40 trillion for the first time, the Treasury Department said on Wednesday, drawing fresh warnings that a fiscal crisis is brewing as ballooning costs for social safety-net programs and interest payments far outstrip revenues held back by tax cuts. The Treasury’s latest daily cash and debt balances statement showed total public debt outstanding at $40.047 trillion on Tuesday, a total that includes Treasury securities held by the public of $32.266 trillion and intra-governmental debt holdings of $7.782 trillion. The federal government’s IOU has now more than doubled in less than a decade, from $19.95 trillion when President Donald Trump was sworn in for the first time in January 2017. Roughly one-third of that increase occurred during two years of frantic government borrowing to fund the COVID-19 pandemic responses undertaken by Trump and former President Joe Biden, with the fiscal policy choices of both presidents combining with long-running tax-and-spending imbalances to account for the rest.Budget watchdog groups have been anticipating the crossing of the threshold for weeks. Some issued stark warnings that a full-blown debt crisis could erupt unless lawmake Source link
