The Torrey Pines golf course in California. The US PGA Tour’s annual tournament at Torrey Pines in California will be added to the top-tier Championship Series starting in 2028, organizers announced Wednesday. The new elite PGA series set to feature 23-24 events for the sport’s best players is part of a major shake-up of men’s golf unveiled last month, and its roster of tournaments is beginning to take shape. Golf’s four major tournaments, The Players Championship, playoff events and the Ryder and Presidents Cups had already been confirmed to be part of a schedule from February through August. So too had the Travelers Championship, which takes places each June at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, and an event sponsored by Japanese corporation Sompo at a yet-to-be-announced venue. Now the Torrey Pines tournament, which will be known as The Sentry from this coming January’s edition under a new sponsorship deal, has been added too. “Earning the distinction of becoming a PGA TOUR Championship Series event in 2028 reinforces our standard of hosting a field of world-class golfers at renowned Torrey Pines Golf Course,” said Marty Gorsich, CEO of the Century Club of San Diego, which co-organizes the tournament. Known until this year as the the Farmers Insurance Open, the tournament began life in 1952 as the San Diego Open. It has been played annually at Torrey Pines since 1968. Justin Rose won the most recent edition, storming to a wire-to-wire victory with a record 23-under to win by seven strokes, for his 13th career PGA TOUR victory and his second at Torrey Pines. Torrey Pines has also hosted two US Opens, including the memorable 2008 edition in which Tiger Woods defeated Rocco Mediate in a 19-hole playoff despite playing with a broken leg. The remaining dozen or so events for the PGA’s new Championship Series will be announced at a later date. A second-tier PGA Tour Challenger Series of at least 20 events will run alongside the Championship Series, offering golfers the chance to secure a pathway to the elite circuit.A system of player promotion and relegation between the two tiers will be introduced. Wall Street indexes touched fresh record highs and oil prices cratered yesterday after Iran said that the Strait of Hormuz was open for passage during a ceasefire in Lebanon and US President Donald Trump said he expected to reach a deal to end the war soon.Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said in a post on X that passage for all commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a key conduit for global energy flows, was declared completely open for the remainder of the 10-day truce brokered by the US that was agreed on Thursday.Benchmark Brent crude futures nosedived and were last trading around $88.90 per barrel, down 10.55% on the day, having hit a session low of $86.09. US crude fell 12.26% to $83.08 a barrel .That is still above pre-war levels that were around $70, but down significantly from late March's highs, which, for Brent, were close to $120 a barrel.Stocks marched higher, with the Wall Street benchmark S&P 500 and Nasdaq hitting new record highs and the Dow Jones Industrial Average reaching its highest level in over two months. The S&P 500 gained 1.49%, to 7,145.87. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 2.32%, to 49,708.17, and the Nasdaq added 1.68%, to 24,508.57. Europe's STOXX 600 also jumped after the news that the waterway would open, climbing more than 1.5%.’The opening of the Strait of Hormuz is a critical step towards normalising transit through the waterway. But the reopening is limited in scope,’ said James Reilly, senior markets economist at Capital Economics. ‘That all being said, this is a significant and necessary step towards potentially ending the war.’ Source link
US President Donald Trump told AFP yesterday that a peace deal with Iran was “very close” and had “no sticking points,” as Tehran declared the Strait of Hormuz open to commercial shipping. The upbeat signals from Washington came as a ceasefire took effect in Lebanon, raising hopes that two of the main obstacles to a US-Iran agreement may have been removed.”We’re very close. Looks like it’s going to be very good for everybody. And we’re very close to having a deal,” Trump said in a brief telephone call with AFP from Las Vegas, adding there were “no sticking points at all” left with Tehran.”The strait’s going to be open, they already are open. And things are going very well.”But Tehran quickly pushed back on one key point. Iran’s foreign ministry said yesterday that its stockpile of enriched uranium would not be transferred “anywhere,” rejecting an earlier claim by Trump that the Islamic republic had agreed to hand it over.Trump hailed a “GREAT AND BRILLIANT DAY FOR THE WORLD!” in celebratory posts praising mediator Pakistan and Gulf allies, while telling Nato to “STAY AWAY” as he rejected the alliance’s offer to help secure the Hormuz strait. After the truce took hold in Lebanon, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the Islamic republic would lift its blockade on shipping through the key Gulf energy route.
