Officials in Occupied Jerusalem have warned of what they describe as a “serious and systematic escalation” at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, citing increased activity by settler groups in recent weeks. In a statement, the Jerusalem Governorate said attempts were being made to impose new realities in the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, including efforts to bring in what it referred to as “animal sacrifices” and an increase in incursions during religious and political occasions. The statement said there had been eight documented attempts since the start of the year to bring sacrificial animals to the mosque or its surroundings during the Passover period. It described this as the highest number recorded since 1967. In three cases, individuals were able to reach entrances near the site before being stopped, it added. The authority also warned of two upcoming dates in May which it said could see further escalation. These include May 15, marking “Jerusalem Day”, commemorating Israel’s capture of East Jerusalem in 1967, and May 22, coinciding with the Jewish festival of Shavuot ( the Feast of Weeks). It said such occasions are often accompanied by increased visits to the site and attempts to bring in ritual items, including plant and animal offerings. Related Story Source link
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has reaffirmed the importance of the transatlantic military alliance with the United States, after US President Donald Trump said his administration was considering reducing the number of American troops stationed in Germany. In remarks reported by German radio, Merz said the German military made an essential contribution to a strong and united NATO, alongside the United States and other allies. He added that the partnership served mutual interests and was rooted in deep transatlantic ties. Germany’s “compass” remained firmly directed towards maintaining a strong alliance and a reliable partnership, Merz said, describing the transatlantic relationship as highly valued by Berlin. FIFA President Gianni Infantino yesterday defended controversial ticket prices for the 2026 World Cup, revealing that organisers had received a record 150mn requests for tickets in the past two weeks.Speaking at the World Sports Summit in Dubai, Infantino stressed that all revenues from next year’s tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada would be pumped back into football around the world.Infantino’s comments were his first public remarks since the ticketing furore erupted earlier this month, with fan groups branding ticket prices as “extortionate” and “astronomical”.FIFA later responded to the criticism by announcing that a sliver of tickets on sale would be priced at $60.”In the last few days, you’ve probably seen there is a lot of debate about ticketing and ticket prices,” Infantino told the Dubai conference.”We have six, seven million tickets on sale and we started two weeks ago. I can tell you in two weeks, 15 days, we received 150mn ticket requests. This shows how powerful the World Cup is.”Infantino said the majority of ticket requests had come from the United States, followed by requests from Germany and Britain.”If you think that in 100 years of history of the World Cup, FIFA has sold 44 million tickets in total, so in two weeks for the next World Cup, we could have filled 300 years of World Cups,” Infantino said. “This is absolutely crazy.””And what is important, what is crucial is that the revenues that are generated from this are going back to the game all over the world and FIFA is the only organisation in the world…that finances football in the entire world.”Without FIFA there will be no football in 150 countries in the world.
