Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development, is set to host the 2nd GCC Women’s Sports Tournament for Universities and Higher Education Institutions from February 6 to 11, 2026.Sponsored by the Ministry of Sports and Youth and hosted for the first time in the State of Qatar, the tournament seeks to strengthen cooperation among Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, while also contributing to the regional development of women’s university sports.By bringing together universities and higher education institutions from across the GCC, HBKU is advancing its role as an advocate for regional cooperation, knowledge exchange, and collaborative institutional partnership. Leveraging world-class infrastructure, the tournament advances the University’s academic mission beyond the classroom, reinforcing student development and well-being as core pillars of higher education.Competition takes place across seven venues, six within Education City and one at Qatar University, with the opening ceremony on February 7, 2026, at Al Shaqab’s Longine Indoor Arena. Around 450 female students representing 16 of the region’s universities and higher education institutions will compete across eight sports: football, volleyball, basketball, padel, table tennis, badminton, athletics, with fencing making its first appearance at the tournament.The tournament’s draw ceremony is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, January 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m at Education City Stadium. Attendees will include heads of the technical committees from the relevant federations, representatives from participating universities, and members of the supervisory committee.Commenting on the competition, Dr. Maryam Hamad Al-Mannai, Vice President for Student Affairs, HBKU, and Chair of the tournament’s Supreme Organizing Committee, stated: “Hosting this event reflects the University’s academic and societal mission. It is not solely a sporting occasion, but a complementary experience that brings together sport, education, and culture, while highlighting the role of women in our societies. We are working with various stakeholders to ensure a successful tournament promoting women’s university sports.”Beyond competition, the tournament affirms the core values of teamwork, integrity, and resilience, while advancing women’s participation in sport as a catalyst for human development and social progress.  Related Story Source link

US President Donald Trump said Saturday that he would impose a 100% tariff on Canada if it follows through on a trade deal with China and warned Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that a deal would endanger his country.”China will eat Canada alive, completely devour it, including the destruction of their businesses, social fabric, and general way of life,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately be hit with a 100% Tariff against all Canadian goods and products coming into the U.S.A.”Carney’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.The Canadian prime minister this month traveled to China to reset the countries’ strained relationship and reached a trade deal with Canada’s second-biggest trading partner after the United States.Immediately after Carney’s China trip, Trump sounded supportive.”It’s a good thing for him to sign a trade deal,” Trump told reporters at the White House on January 16. “If you can get a deal with China, you should do that.”However, US-Canada tensions have grown in recent days following Carney’s criticism of Trump’s pursuit of Greenland.Saturday Trump suggested that China would try to use Canada to evade US tariffs.”If Governor Carney thinks he is going to make Canada a ‘Drop Off Port’ for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken,” Trump said, using a title for Carney that refers to Trump’s past calls for Canada to become the 51st US state.Trump has repeatedly threatened to annex Canada, and this week posted an image on social media of a map with Canada – as well as Greenland and Venezuela – covered by the American flag.If Trump makes good on the latest threat, the new tariff would greatly increase US duties on its northern neighbour, adding pressure to Canadian industrial sectors such as metal manufacturing, autos and machinery.Relations between Carney and Trump seemed relatively placid until the Canadian leader this week spoke out forcefully against Trump’s pursuit of Greenland.Carney subsequently at the World Economic Forum called on nations to accept that a rules-based global order was over and pointed to Canada as an example of how “middle powers” might act together to avoid being victimised by American hegemony.Carney, during his speech in Davos, Switzerland, did not directly call out Trump or the United States by name.However, the prime minister argued that “middle powers must act together because if you are not at the table, you are on the menu”.Many world leaders and industry titans present at the Switzerland confab responded with a standing ovation.Trump shot back in his own Davos speech and said Canada “lives because of the United States”, a statement that Carney rejected on Thursday.”Canada and the United States have built a remarkable partnership in the economy, in security and in rich cultural exchange,” Carney said in Quebec. “Canada doesn’t live because of the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadian.”Since then, Trump has dug in, revoking Canada’s invitation to his Board of Peace that he wants to deal with international conflicts and Gaza’s future.After Carney’s election last year, Trump and Carney shared a congenial tone.”I think the relationship is going to be very strong,” Trump said at the time.However, Trump this month dismissed the mega trade deal between the United States, Canada, and Mexico – up for renegotiation in July – as “irrelevant”.The two nations, along with Mexico, are set to host the World Cup later this year.  Related Story Source link

The Sultanate of Oman and the United States of America held the third strategic dialogue in Muscat on Sunday.The two sides discussed means of maximizing the benefits of the Free Trade Agreement between the two countries and augmenting US investments in sectors of priority for Oman. These sectors include the digital economy, technology and space, in addition to mining, logistics, aviation, and infrastructure. Cooperation in the fields of education and culture was also discussed, particularly educational programs, academic and professional exchange, and investment in research and innovation.During the dialogue, the Omani side announced the Sultanate of Oman’s approval to join the “Artemis Accords” for space exploration.
