Norris clinches pole for Dutch GP

McLaren driver Lando Norris won pole position for Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix, the current world champion pipping Mercedes rivals George Russell and Kimi Antonelli into second and third place.The British driver set a time of one minute and 11.163 seconds, 0.102 seconds faster than compatriot Russell, to take a critical advantage into the Grand Prix race on Sunday. “Best lap of my life,” said a pumped-up Norris, who had earlier complained his McLaren was lacking pace after being beaten into third in the sprint race earlier Saturday. “I just had to commit through everything because I knew how close it was going to be,” added the 26-year-old, who is enjoying a run of good form having won the Hungarian Grand Prix before the summer break. Russell had been the quickest driver all weekend but was forced into second place on the grid on the last qualifying lap that was affected by light rain. “I was on a very strong lap, to be honest. And then I just had a small oversteer in turn eight” that cost him the vital tenth of a second, said Russell. World championship leader Antonelli will start from third on the grid, ruing a difficult qualifying session with an error in turn one costing him a few crucial tenths of a second.The teenage sensation set the pace in the first half of the season, winning six races, including a stunning run of five consecutive Grand Prix. But the chasing pack has closed in fast, with McLaren in particular bringing upgrades to their car that have brought them into contention.”It was a very good wake-up call this weekend that you can never lower your guard,” said Antonelli, who turns 20 next week. Oscar Piastri, who took the chequered flag last year at Zandvoort, qualified fourth, ahead of the two Ferraris driven by Charles Leclerc and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. Despite raucous home support, local favourite Max Verstappen was unable to make an impact and will start seventh on the grid. ‘Real fight’Sunday’s race promises to be a nail-biter, with just a few tenths of a second separating the top four or five drivers. Starting on pole however will be a major advantage for Norris. Since Zandvoort returned to the Grand Prix calendar in 2021, the pole-setter has won every time given the difficulty of overtaking on the unique track.”We have a real fight on our hands these days,” said Russell after triumphing in the sprint. “I think that’s quite fun and that’s how Formula One should be. It shouldn’t just be two teammates going for race wins week in week out. Everybody should be in with a shot,” he added. Ferrari will also challenge on Sunday. Leclerc overhauled Norris in the sprint and Hamilton will be aiming to take a chunk out of Antonelli’s 53-point championship lead. McLaren, who have won here for the past two editions, will also be in the mix and it would be a brave punter who rules out four-time world champion Max Verstappen – especially not at his “home” Grand Prix.The “orange army” roaring him on will hope he can produce a miracle in his Red Bull that has been off the pace so far this season. Sunday’s Grand Prix will be the last edition for the Dutch since the Zandvoort circuit. Despite attracting big crowds eager to see Verstappen, promoters have pulled the plug, saying the financial risks were too great.Fears that Verstappen, who has made little secret of his dislike of the 2026 regulations, could quit the sport played a part in the decision to pull the plug on Zandvoort. But ironically, as the teams were setting up for the last Dutch Grand Prix, Verstappen announced he had extended his contract with Red Bull until 2030, guaranteeing his future and Dutch interest in the sport.  Related Story Source link

Egypt-Palestine talks focus on Gaza, West Bank developments

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty discussed, during a telephone conversation with Vice President of the State of Palestine Hussein Al Sheikh, the importance of safeguarding the territorial integrity of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank and enabling the Palestinian Authority to undertake its responsibilities.In a statement Sunday, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said the conversation centered on the grave developments in the West Bank, with Abdelatty condemning the Israeli expansion of settlement activities, rising settler violence and abusive acts in East Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque.He further contended that the settlement project in the E1 area is utterly unacceptable, as it threatens to cantonize the West Bank, encircle and isolate East Jerusalem, and further undermine efforts to establish an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967, lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital.In addition, the two sides addressed ongoing efforts to complete the obligations of the first phase of US President Donald Trump’s peace plan, in accordance with the roadmap, and move to the second phase.This includes ensuring the flow of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip and enabling the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG) to embark on carrying out its duties from within the Strip. For his part, the President of the State of Palestine lauded Egypt’s supportive role in the Palestinian cause, along with the efforts it exerts to support the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.He asserted that coordination and consultation would continue throughout the upcoming phase.  Related Story Source link

Medecins Sans Frontieres condemns Israel's closure of investigations into attacks that killed four staff members and relatives

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) has condemned the Israeli authorities' decision to close two cases referred by the organization for review without opening criminal investigations.The two cases concern multiple attacks on an MSF convoy in Gaza City in November 2023, which killed two people, and an airstrike on an MSF shelter in Khan Younis in February 2024, which killed two people and injured six others.In a statement, MSF said the decision came nearly two years after it submitted its requests and after the organization petitioned the Israeli Supreme Court over the military prosecutor’s failure to respond to its formal requests.MSF described the decision as unjust and unacceptable, criticizing the closure of the cases after two years of silence.’This is not surprising when a military institution is tasked with investigating its own actions,” the organization said, arguing that the system had demonstrated an unwillingness to address violations in Gaza that may amount to war crimes.MSF said its staff members and their family members had been killed by Israeli forces despite the organization having notified Israeli authorities of their locations. The vehicles involved were also clearly marked with the organization’s emblem, it said.The organization said the decision effectively confirmed that there would be no meaningful accountability within Israel’s legal system for the deaths of its staff, and called for the cases to be reviewed by an independent, impartial investigative body.According to MSF, 15 of its staff members have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza since October 2023, along with around 1,700 healthcare workers.MSF reiterated that no military objective can justify the mass killing of civilians and that an internal military review cannot replace genuine, independent and impartial accountability.   Source link

Top India court orders new steps to protect threatened elephants

India’s top court has ordered tough new steps to protect wild elephant herds as habitat loss and human-elephant conflict intensify, a move welcomed by campaigners on Friday.The world’s most populous nation is also home to the majority of Asian elephants, a species listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and whose habitat is increasingly being sliced up by highways and railways or clawed up by mines.The Supreme Court has directed states to prevent the blockage of elephant corridors — routes used by herds to move between rapidly shrinking habitats — and ordered a survey to identify obstructions along those routes.That must include steps to end the use of any “coercive measure to divert the natural movement of the elephants”, it read.A ban on “hulla parties” — groups deployed to drive elephants away using “fireballs” and burning stakes — is required, it said.The court ruling, issued on Monday, said ministry guidelines were already in place to ensure “unobstructed” elephant corridors, but those routes have often been impeded.Wildlife conservationist Prerna Singh Bindra, who led the pro bono public interest case, told AFP her petition had challenged state governments “supporting horrifically cruel practices”.”It becomes a mob situation with thousands of people chasing the elephants using burning spears,” she said.”That does nothing to resolve conflict; science shows it only exacerbates the conflict.”There are fewer than 50,000 Asian elephants in the wild, according to the World Wildlife Fund — most in India, with others in Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia.Elephants are protected by law, are named as India’s “national heritage animal”, and many followers of the elephant-headed Hindu deity Ganesh see the animals as sacred.But they face mounting pressure from habitat loss, fragmentation, and increasing human-elephant conflict.Bindra, a former member of India’s top governing body for wildlife conservation and policy, the National Board for Wildlife, said the court’s order was needed to ensure the survival of elephants in one of the most densely populated areas in the world.”We know where elephant corridors and habitats are — and they are being destroyed and fragmented at an unprecedented pace,” Bindra said.”The will to protect and preserve is markedly absent. We hope with this Supreme Court order, this survey must lead to action.”India’s government elephant survey, released in October 2025, estimated 22,446 wild elephants nationwide — but also warned the herds were found in a “mere fraction” of their historical range, occupying only 3.5% of the area they once roamed.In a separate order, the top court on Tuesday ordered tighter welfare safeguards for India’s more than 2,600 captive elephants, including ensuring medical records for each animal and regular health checks.Captive elephants, once used commonly for logging, are now used for tourism, entertainment, and religious ceremonies.Animal rights campaign group PETA India said it welcomed measures to ease their suffering but maintained that “no elephant belongs in captivity”.”Whether captured from the wild or bred for a lifetime of confinement, these intelligent, social animals are denied their forest homes, separated from their mothers, stripped of autonomy, enslaved, and controlled through intimidation and weapons,” PETA India director Poorva Joshipura told AFP.  Source link
