Houthis declare maritime blockade against Saudi

Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis said yesterday they would impose a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia, opening a potential new front against the United States in its war with Iran and raising the threat to global energy supplies and trade beyond the Gulf. The Houthis made their announcement despite signs that Tehran and Washington want to resume diplomacy to halt a worsening cycle of attacks that has all but wrecked a fragile interim agreement signed last month.Iran’s Foreign Ministry said mediators had presented “proposals” to Tehran, signalling that diplomatic contacts remain active, but gave no details. Oil prices rose briefly after the Houthi statement but later fell back as traders held out hope of a diplomatic breakthrough. The insurance cost of shipping goods through the Red Sea rose on the increased risks for merchant shipping.Iran had been pressing the Houthis to close the Bab el-Mandeb gateway to the Red Sea if the US continued to attack Iranian power infrastructure.The full closure of the Bab el-Mandeb strait would reduce global oil supply by 7% as it would leave most of Saudi oil exports unable to leave the region. The disruption would add to the huge cut to oil flows from the war in the Gulf, which has already reduced shipments by 10% of global supply.In their statement, the Houthis’ armed forces said they were declaring “a maritime embargo” based on the equation of ‘an eye for an eye’, effective immediately”.There was no immediate response from Saudi Arabia.A senior Iranian official told Reuters yesterday that Tehran had received a proposal from mediators for a 10-day ceasefire in efforts to salvage the interim deal, intended to pave the way to a lasting agreement to end the war that began on February 28 with US-Israeli attacks on Iran.Neither the ministry nor the official who spoke to Reuters gave any details on the putative ceasefire discussions.  Source link

Kuwait says power and water facilities attacked for fourth consecutive day

Kuwait on Tuesday said Iran had hit several power and water desalination plants a day earlier, causing fires in the fourth such attacks in as many days.”In light of the continued Iranian heinous aggressions on the state of Kuwait, several electricity power plants and water distillation stations were subjected to attacks for the fourth day in a row resulting in fires in several facilities,” the ministry of electricity, water and renewable energy said in a statement on X. Lebanon army says deploying in southern area after Israel deal

The Lebanese army announced on Tuesday that it had begun deploying to an area in the south, one of three “pilot zones” outlined in a deal with Israel to disarm Hezbollah.The announcement came with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun visiting Washington, which sponsored the deal with Israel, for a meeting with his US counterpart Donald Trump.To date, Israeli troops have only controlled the outskirts of one of the so-called pilot zones, with their occupation of other areas yet to be addressed. The Lebanese military already has a presence in the other two pilot zones.”Military units began deploying this morning to Zawtar al-Garhbiya” in the Nabatieh region, the army said in a statement.An AFP correspondent saw military vehicles, one of them flying the Lebanese flag, entering the village which sits on the edge of what Israel has dubbed the “security zone”. Kuwait condemns statements made by Houthi spokesperson against Saudi Arabia

Kuwait expressed its strong condemnation and denunciation of the statements made by the Houthi military spokesperson, describing the accusations against Saudi Arabia as baseless and rejecting the threats targeting maritime security and freedom of navigation.In a statement issued today, Kuwait’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed the country’s full solidarity with Saudi Arabia and its support for all measures the Kingdom takes to safeguard its security and sovereignty. The ministry stressed that Saudi Arabia’s security was an integral part of the security of Kuwait and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states.The ministry called on the international community to ensure the implementation of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2216 on Yemen and Resolution 2722 on the rights and freedom of navigation in the Red Sea. It also emphasized that freedom of navigation through international waterways is a right guaranteed under international law and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.  Related Story Source link

Jordan intercepts five Iranian drones

Jordan’s military intercepted five drones launched from Iran overnight and into Tuesday morning, a military source at the General Command of the Jordanian Armed Forces said on Tuesday.The source said the drones were successfully neutralized in accordance with operational requirements and established defensive procedures. No casualties or material damage were reported.The source said the armed forces remain on high alert, continue to monitor the Kingdom’s airspace and are prepared to respond to any aerial threat to Jordan’s security and the safety of its citizens.
