The Philippines, chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), expressed concern over an airstrike in Myanmar’s Rakhine state that caused deaths, injuries and destruction, and stood ready to facilitate discussions within the regional bloc on how best to assist Myanmar.”The Philippines is closely monitoring developments and expresses concern over the attacks which resulted in destruction, loss of lives and injuries to those affected,” Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary for ASEAN Affairs Ana Marie Hernando said in an email response on Saturday.As ASEAN chair, Manila said it remained mindful of the views of all member states and would continue to be guided by the regional bloc’s consensus-based approach.The Philippines said it stood ready to facilitate discussions within ASEAN on ways to assist Myanmar, in line with the common aspiration of finding a solution that is “Myanmar-owned and led.”Monday’s Kyauktaw airstrike, Rakhine’s deadliest such attack since a December hospital bombing, killed 50 people and wounded dozens more.Myanmar has been locked in a nationwide civil war since a 2021 coup, with an alliance of armed groups, including the Arakan Army, fighting against the military.The protracted conflict has since killed around 100,000 people and displaced more than 3.5 million in the impoverished Southeast Asian nation. More than 700 trucks carrying international humanitarian aid arrived in Afghanistan via Pakistan despite a near-total closure of the land border between the two countries following clashes in October, the UN said Sunday.The convoy was carrying “food and other critical humanitarian items,” Olga Cherevko, spokeswoman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Afghanistan, told AFP.UN Resident & Humanitarian Coordinator for Pakistan Mo Yahya said on X that “seven hundred and twenty four trucks of humanitarian cargo have crossed into Afghanistan through Torkham, reaching families who need it most”.He also thanked Islamabad and “all those who made it possible to keep the humanitarian lifeline open”.Acute child malnutrition has reached critical levels in Afghanistan this year, the World Food Programme (WFP) warned in early August.Following deadly earthquakes last year, several climate-related disasters this year and the return of millions of Afghans from Iran and Pakistan since 2023, nearly 14mn Afghans are facing acute hunger, according to WFP.The conflict with Pakistan, which has led to the near-total closure of the land border between the two countries since October 2025, has severely disrupted logistical routes for delivering humanitarian aid, WFP Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau told AFP in May.Fortified biscuits destined for Afghan schoolchildren that were arriving from Pakistan earlier this year had to be rerouted through Iran before the war there also disrupted that route.The biscuits eventually reached Afghanistan months later after a land and sea journey passing through countries including Jordan, Turkiye and Azerbaijan.  Source link
